Lesson1:Introduction




WhatisPhotoshop?
Photoshopisanimageeditingapplicationwhichisusedbymanyprofessionalphotographersand
designers.Itcanbeusedforanykindofimageeditingsoastotransformthesnapshotsandgraphicsinto
imagesthatwilltakeyourwordstothenextlevel.Photoshophassomanyfeatures;henceitisvery
powerfulapplication.Andthatalsomakesitveryexpensive.Itmaynotbebestoptionforphoto/image
editingifitisnotgoingtobeusedprofessionally.
YoucanusePhotoshopforalmostanykindofimageediting;suchastouchingupphotos,creatinghighqualitygraphics,andmuch,muchmore.Inthislesson,we'llintroduceyoutothePhotoshopinterface.It
includeshowtoopenfiles,workwithpanels,customizetheworkspace,andchangethedisplaysize.
Photoshopisacomplexapplicationanditcanfeelabitintimidatingtouseatfirst.Becauseofthis,we
recommenddownloadingourexamplefilealongwiththelesson(right-clickthelinktosaveit).The
morehands-onexperienceyouhavewithPhotoshop,theeasieritwillbecometouse.



Lesson2:GettingtoknowtheInterface

Openingfiles
Mostofthetimes,you'llwanttostartbyopeninganexistingphotoratherthancreatinganewblank
image.Photoshopallowsyoutoopenandeditexistingimagefiles,suchas.jpgor.pngfiles,aswell

as.psd(Photoshopdocument)files.
Toopenafile:
1. SelectFile:Open.
2. Adialogboxwillappear.Locateandselectthefileonyourcomputer,thenclickOpen.
3. ThefilewillappearinPhotoshop.
Ifyoudon'tcurrentlyhavePhotoshopopen,youcanlocateandright-clickthefileonyour
computerandthenchooseOpenwithAdobePhotoshoptoopenthefile.


OverviewofthePhotoshopinterface
AsPhotoshopisdesignedprimarilyforprofessionaluse,theinterfacemayfeelabitcomplexand
intimidatingfornewusers.Evenifyouhavesomeexperiencewithotherimageeditingsoftware,it'sa
goodideatobecomefamiliarwiththedifferentpartsofthePhotoshopinterface.
LookingattheimagebelowyoucanbecomemorefamiliarwiththePhotoshopinterface.


WorkingwithToolsandotherpanels
TheToolspanel
TheToolspanelisoneofthemostimportantfeaturesinPhotoshop—it'swhereyou'llselectdifferent
toolsforeditingimages.Onceyou'vechosenatool,you'llbeabletouseitwiththecurrentdocument.
Yourcursorwillchangetoreflectthecurrentlyselectedtool.
Youcanalsoclickandholdtoselectadifferenttool.Forexample,youcanclickandhold
theRectangletooltoselectdifferentShapetools,suchastheEllipse,Line,orCustomshapetools.
Showingandhidingpanels
You'llalsobeabletoviewandmodifyalotofinformationaboutthecurrentdocumentthroughthe
otherpanelsintheworkspace.Forexample;youcanviewthedocument'slayersintheLayerspanel.To
showorhideanypanel,clicktheWindowmenuandthenselectthedesiredpanel—currentlyvisible
panelsareindicatedbyacheckmark.Intheimagebelow,we'reusingtheWindowmenutoturnonthe
Historypanel.


Youcanusethedouble-arrowstoexpandorcollapsepanels.Thiscanbehelpfulifyouwantto
temporarilyhideapanelwithoutremovingitfromtheworkspace.
YoucanalsopresstheTabkeyonyourkeyboardtoshoworhideallactivepanels.
Movingpanels

Ifyouwanttochangeapanel'slocation,youcanmoveitbyclickinganddraggingthepaneltoa
newpartoftheworkspace.
However,ifyou'replanningtofollowalongwithourtutorial,werecommendkeepingmostpanelsinthe
defaultlocationfornow.Toresetthepanelstotheirdefaultpositions,selectWindowthenWorkspace:
ResetEssentials.NotethatthisprocessmayvarydependingonwhichversionofPhotoshopyou're
using.Forexample,inPhotoshopElements,you'llgotoWindow:ResetPanels.


CustomizingthePhotoshopenvironment


IfyouwanttocustomizePhotoshop,youcanadjustthedefaultapplicationsettings.Mostoftheseoptions
areprettytechnical,butwe'dliketoshowyoutwobasicadjustmentsyoumayfindhelpful.
Toadjustthedefaultunit:
Bydefault,adocument'sdimensionsaremeasuredininches.Ifyou'renotprimarilyeditingimagesfor
prints,werecommendchangingthissettingtopixels.
SelectEdit->Preferences->Units&Rulers.Ifyou'reusingaMac,selectPhotoshop->Preferences->Units&
Rulers.

Adialogboxwillappear.UnderUnits,clickthemenunexttoRulers,selectPixels,andclickOK.Youmay
needtoquitandrestartPhotoshopforthechangestotakeeffect.
Toadjustthetextsize:
Ifyou'dlikethetextofthePhotoshopinterfacetobelargerorsmaller,youcanadjusttheapplication'stext
size.
SelectEdit->Preferences->Interface(orPhotoshopright-arrowPreferencesright-arrowInterfaceona

Mac).
UnderText,clickthemenunexttoUIFontSize,thenselectthedesiredsize.Youmayneedtoquitand
restartPhotoshopforthechangestotakeeffect.
Changingthezoomlevel
Whenyou'reeditinganimageinPhotoshop,you'lloftenbeviewingitatlessthan100%ofitsfullsize.
That'sbecausemostmoderndigitalcamerastakelarge,high-resolutionphotos.Infact,theseimagesareso
large,thatmostcomputerscreenscan'tdisplayallofthepixelsintheimageatonce.Thisisactuallya
goodthing,becauseitmeansyou'llhaveextradetailtoworkwithasyouedittheimage.
Ifyouwanttozoominorout,simplypressCtrl+orCtrl-(holdtheCtrlkeyandthenpressthe+or-key).If
you'reusingaMac,you'llpressCommand+orCommand-.
Intheexamplebelow,youcanseeadocumentat44.4%ofitsfullsize.Noticethatyoucanseethecurrent
zoomlevelatthetopofthedocumentwindow,aswellasinthebottom-leftcornerofthescreen.



Bycontrast,theexamplebelowshowsthesameimageat100%(fullsize).Noticethatonlypartofthe
imageisvisibleatthiszoomlevel.Ifdesired,youcanusethehorizontalandverticalscrollbarstoview
otherpartsoftheimage.

Tozoomtheimagetofitthedocumentwindow,pressCtrl+0(holdtheCtrlkeyandthenpressthezero
key).Ifyou'reusingaMac,you'llpressCommand+0.Dependingonyourcomputer'sgraphicscard,some
zoomlevels(such33.33%and66.67%)cancausetheimagetoappearpixelated.Ifthishappens,youmay
wanttozoomto25%or50%instead.



Lesson3:TheSelectionandRetouchingBasics


Step1of10:

UseContent-AwareFill.
Usingthelassotool,selecttheright-mostgroupof3peopleinthefirstimageatthetop.ChooseEdit>Fill
inthetopmenu.

Step2of10:
ApplyContent-Aware.
ChooseContent-AwareintheUsemenuandclickOK.
ApplyingContent-Aware,‘Fill’multipletimestotheareaorpartoftheareaoftenimprovesresults.
Forsomeimages,selectingtheColorAdaptioncheckboxwillprovideasmoothercolortransition.Tryitwith
yourphotos.
Step3of10:
UsetheContent-AwareMovetool.
Intheskyimage,selecttheContent-AwareMoveTool(nestedundertheSpotHealingbrush).



IntheOptionsbar,selectMovefromtheModemenu.
Step4of10:
Repositiontheskystreaktotheleft.
MakeagenerousselectionaroundthethinstreaklinewiththeContent-AwareMovetool(seeexample).
IntheOptionsbarunderAdaptation,enter5fortheStructureoptionand7forColor.
Dragthestreaktothelefttoseehowitblendswithitsnewsurroundings.
TheAdaptationOptionscontroltheblendingofthepixels.AhigherStructurevalue(1-7)maintainsmoreof
thecopiededgepixels.AhigherColorvalue(0-10)providesmorecolorblending.
Step5of10:
UsetheExtendMode.
Forthethirdimage(thefoliageimage),selecttheContent-AwareMoveTool.IntheOptionsbar,select
ExtendfromtheModemenu.

UnderAdaption,enter5forStructureand8forColor.ThehighStructurelevelwillkeepthefoliagedetailed,



andthehighlevelofcolorwillensurethefoliageiswellblendedintotheexistingfoliage.
Step6of10:
Makethefoliageappeartogrow.
Selectaportionofthefoliagewiththetool,liketheoneintheexampletotheright.Moveyourselectionto
theright,toextendthefoliageintotherockyarea.
Step7of10:
UsetheSpotHealingbrush.
Inthefourthimage,selecttheSpotHealingbrushintheToolspanel.
IntheOptionsbar,setModetoReplaceandTypetoContent-Aware.
Step8of10:
RemovethetelephonewireusingtheSpotHealingbrush.
Movethebrushoveroneendofthewire.Makesurethebrushislargerthanthewire.Right-clickwithyour
mouse(Control+clickonMac),orusetheleft[andright]bracketkeystochangethebrushsizetoabout
64px.
Clickanddragtoremovethefirstportionofthewire.Thenrepeattoremovetheotherendofthewire.
Step9of10:
UsethePatchtool.
WiththePatchtool,youcanchoosewhichareaPhotoshopusestofilltheareawhereyouremoveanobject.
SelectthePatchtoolintheToolpanel(foundundertheSpotHealingBrushtool).IntheOptionsbar,choose
Content-AwarefromthePatchTypemenu.
Step10of10:
RemovetheBananaslugusingthePatchtool.
SetAdaptationvalues.TryStructure=5,andColor=4forthisimage.Thehighstructurelevelwillkeepthe
rigidityofthetreebark,andamediumcoloradaptionwillblendinwiththesurroundingcolors.
WiththePatchtool,drawaselectionaroundtheslug.Dragyourselectiontotherightofitscurrentposition.
ReleasethemousebuttonandPhotoshophealsthearea.






Lesson4:ImageSizeandResolution

Photographsandimageshavefoundvariedusagesinthecommonlife;imagesarerequiredeverytimeyou
wanttofillanapplicationforajoborforanewcourse.Theissueariseswhenweneedtoresizetheimage
andkeepitsresolutionintact.Re-sizingisaneasythingbutkeepingupwiththeresolutionisgoingtobea
task.Herewearegoingtoleverageyouwiththerequisiteunderstandingoftheimagesizeandresolution.
Caution:Itisofgreatimportancethatyouaresavingthemasterfilewithallthelayersintactatadifferent
locationinyourcomputer.Savingapicturewiththeoriginalsizeandresolutionleveragesyouwiththe
opportunitytodoalotofthingswiththepictureandlearnnewthings.


UnderstandingResolution:Resolutionistheonlycomplicatedthingintheworldofphotographyand
Photoshop.Youwillhavetodevelopanintricateunderstandingofthistermtoseeeyetoeyewiththe
photographersandwiththeclients.Theconfusionincreasesbyleapsandboundswhenyourealizethat
therearetwodifferenttypesofresolutionintheworldofdigitalphotography.
OneofthemisDotsperinchandtheotheroneisPixelsperinch.‘Dotsperinch’iscommonlyreferredtoas
‘dpi’;and‘Pixelsperinch’isreferredtoas‘ppi’.‘Pixelsperinch’ismoreprominentandpreferredinthe
contemporaryworld.DotsperinchismoreaboutprintingonpaperwhilePixelperinchisaboutdigital
technologiesandmanipulationofphotoswiththehelpofdigitaltools,withoutlosingontothequalityofthe
picture.
Dotsperinch(dpi):Dotsperinchreferstothepotentialofaninkjetprinterofapplyingdotsoveraninch
ofthepaper.Dotsperinchwhenprintedwiththehelpofaninkjetprinterwillalsobedependentonthe
printerforthequalityofthepicture.Therangeofdotsperinchvariesfrom720to2800dots.Inrecent
times,thetechnologicaldevelopmentshaveincreaseditupto3600dotsperinch.Thequalityofthe
picturedependsontheclosenessofthedots.Thecloserthedotsandbetterthemixingofcolorswillbe
andthephotowillgrowbrighteranddeeperinsense.Theblendingofthecolorisgoingtoaffectthetone
ofthecoloronthepaper.

Thequalityofpaperisalsoresponsiblefortheresolutionofthepicture.Onasimplewhiteporouspaperthe
settingof720dpiworksfinewhilewhenitcomestoglossypaperwithsmoothtexture,settingslike2800
dpiareusedfordevelopingaqualityoutput.Ahighersettingisrequiredbecauseglossypapersareknown
tosoakuptheinkfasterthannormalpaper.DPIisusedwheneverprintingisdiscussed.
Pixelsperinch(ppi):Pixelperinchisdiscussedeverytimedigitalphotographyismentioned.Unlikethe
caseofdpi,here,digitalchangesandalterationisdiscussedinsteadofprintingandtypeofpaper.Pixelper
inchisallaboutthedistanceofpixelswhiledevelopingadigitalpicture.Pixelsperinchareanimportant
settingwhenaimingforhighqualityoutput.Attimes,lowsettingisdesirablewhilemostofthetimesthe
settingdependsuponthekindofphotographythephotographeraimstodo.
Howppiworks:Forexample,ifyouhaveapictureof122ppithenthepixelsaregoingtobeseparatedand
notoverlapped.Thefinalphotomusthavecloserpixelssothatthepicturelooksflawlessandsmooth.
Tips:Alotofprofessionalphotographersarenotwellversedwithtermslikeppianddpi,theygenerallyend
upmismatchingeachother.Therearegoingtobetimeswhentheywillbeusingdpiinplaceofppiandvice
versa.Youwillhavetopaycloseattentiontotheimage,technology(whetheranalogordigital)anddecide
onyourown.


ResizinganImage
1.ChooseImage>ImageSize
2.Useoneofthefollowingstepsformodifyingthepreviewoftheimage.
•Clickonthecornerofthedialogboxanddragittoresizeitaccordingtoyourview.
•Dragthepartoftheimageyouwanttoviewtoseetheeffectsofresizing.
•Ifyouarelookingforwardtochangethemagnification,holdctrlandclickontheimageforwindows
user.Macuserscanholdcommandandclickontheimage.
3.Inordertochangetheunitofmeasurementforthedimensionofpixels,clickonthetrianglethatis
presentnexttothedimensionsbuttonandthenyoucanselectfromthemenu.
4.Ifyouarelookingforwardtomaintaintheoriginalratioofthewidthorheightmeasurementthenyou
willhavetocheckmarkontheoptionofConstrainProportion.CheckingthisoptionandclickingOKcangive
youlibertyofmaintainingoriginalration.


5.Youcanselectoneofthefollowingoptions:
•Ifyouareplanningtochangethesizeorresolutionoftheimage,youwillhavetoseethatyouare
selectingtheresamplesizeoptionavailable.
•Youwillhavetoselecttheresamplebutton,ifyouareplanningtochangetheresolutionoftheimage
whilechangingthesizeoftheimage.
•Oryoucangoaheadwiththeresizingoftheimagewithoutworryingabouttheresamplebutton.
6.Youwillnowhavetoensurethatyouareenteringthevaluesofthewidthandtheheightaccordingto
yourneed.Inordertoentervalues,youwillhavetochoosefromthemenuspresentnexttothewidthand
heighttextboxes.Thenewimagefilesizewillappearonthetopsideofthescreen.Thedialogboxwillalso
displaythecurrentwidthandheightoftheimage.
7.ForchangingtheResolutionoftheimage,youwillhavetoenterthevalues.Youhavethelibertyof
selectingadifferentunitofmeasurement.Itwillhelpyouinunderstandingthenuancesoftheproductwith
greatease.
8.Ifyourimagehaslayersandtherearestylesappliedtothelayersoftheimagethenyouwillhaveto
selectScaleStylefromthegeariconandthenscaletheeffectsintheresizedimage.Youcanmakeuseof
thisimageonlyifyouhadselectedConstrainProportionoption.
9.Nowthatyouhavechangedallthesettingsaccordingtoyourneed,itistimetodoanyofthe
following:
Youcanchangethewidth,orheightofpixelsandalsothatofdocumentsizes.


10.ClickOK.


OtherResamplingOptions
PreserveDetails:thisoptionwillallowyoutoremoveallthenoisefromtheimage.Thenoisereduction
optionswillhelpyouinmanagingthesmoothnessofthephoto.
BicubicSmoother:ifyouareaimingtoenlargetheimagethenthisisthebestoption.Thesizeoftheimage
increaseswithgreateasethattoowithoutlosingitssmoothness.
BicubicSharpner:thistoolallowsyoutoalterthesharpnessoftheimage.Withtheefficientuseofthistool

youwillbeabletoincreasethesharpnessoftheimageandmakeitappearvivid.
BicubicSmoother:thistoolwillhelpyouinsmoothingthesurroundingsoftheobjectintheimage.Youcan
alsomakeuseofcomplexcalculatorsformanagingthesmoothnessoftheimageandensurethatahigh
qualityimageappears.
NearestNeighbor:hardedgesaregoingtodilutethequalityofyourimage.Youwillhavetoseethatyou
aremanagingalltheedgessmoothlyandmakeitlookgoodandbetter.Withthistoolyouwillbeableto
preservethehardedgesoftheimage.
Bilinear:thismethodlooksforthesurroundingedgesofthephotos.Youcanfixtheissuewiththehelpof
thistoolandmakeyourimagelookprettierandamazinglybeautiful.


Creating,openingandimportingimagesfromvariedsources
There’salotyoucandowithyourimagesstoredinsomedecrepitudefolder,herearetherestofthe
amazingoptionsyoucandependonandcreatebetterimages:
CreateanImage:
1.Choosefile>New
2.Givethenewfileaname
3.Youwillhavetoselectthesizeofthedocument.Youcanalsospecifythetypeofthedocumenthere.
4.Nowthatyouhavegivenitaname,itistimeforspecifyingtheheightandwidthofthename.
5.Youwillalsohavetoselecttheresizingsizeoftheimageandkeepitsavedinthefile.
6.Decidetheresolution,colorschemeandbitdepthandalsothecolormodeoftheimage.
7.Nowthatyouhaveplaceditontheclipboard,itisgoingtobeoccupyingalotofspace,sotryto
completeeditingitbeforemovingontoanyotherimage.
8.Youwillhavetoselectthebackgroundschemeoftheimageandensurethatyouareusingitproperly.
9.Usingthepresetoptionselectthebestimagesettingforyournewimage
10.Clickok.
11.Yourimageisready.Nowyoucanmakeuseofvariedcolors,image,graphicsandpatternstomake
yourimagelookreallyvividandpretty.



Duplicateanimage


Thereareloadsofoptions.Ifyousimplydonotwanttocreateanimagethenyoucangoaheadand
duplicateanimageandmakerequisitechangesintoitformakingitlookprettierandhealthier.Itisgoingto
benefityouroverallcolorschemeandwillmakeyourgraphiclookreallyvivid.
1.Youwillhavetoselectandopentheimageyouwanttoduplicate.
2.ChooseImage>Duplicate.Clickontheduplicatebuttontocreateaduplicatecopyoftheimage.
3.Youwillhavetoenteranewnameandsavetheimageaccordingtoit.
4.Thereareloadsofoptionsyoucanmakethebestuseof.Thereareoptionslikemergelayers,select
duplicatemerged.YouwillhavetopreservethelayersoftheimagewiththehelpofoptionDeselected.
5.Nowthatyouhavedoneallthatisrequired,itistimeforyoutoclickOKandfinalizetheimage.


OpenafileusingtheOpencommand
1.ChooseFile>Open

2.Nowthatyouhaveopenedtheimage,itistimetodoalltherequisitetasksandmaketheimageof
yourdesire.
3.Clickontheopenbuttonandstartmakingtheimageyoudesire.
4.Assoonasyouclickontheopenbutton,adialogboxwillappearanditwillprovideyouwiththe
detailsofthewidth,heightandthecolorschemeoftheimage.Youcanmanipulatethedataheretoacquire
thedesiredresults.
5.Youwillhavetoselectthenameofthearticleyouwanttoopen.Ifitisnotopening,youwilleither
havetocreateitorcheckforitintheotherdirectories.
Note:TospecifythenumberoffileslistedintheOpenRecentmenu,changetheRecentFileListContains
optionintheFileHandlingpreferences.ChooseEdit>Preferences>FileHandling(Windows),orPhotoshop
>Preferences>FileHandling(MacOS).

Layerscanbemovedsooneisaboveanother.Thisrejectsthefoundation,whichisbolted,andcan'tbe

TheessentialthoughtistoeitherduplicatetheBackgroundLayerandmakeanyconformityspecificallytoit
(shadingchanges,honing,blurring,complexity,presentation,andsoforth.)ormakethatmodificationinan
alterationlayer.Onceyou'vemadethebalancedlayer(eitherutilizingacopiedlayeroragenuine
conformitylayer)thenGoOverboard!!Imeanit…permityourselftogowaysharp,wayfoggy,wayred,
