Understandingtypesofdataanalytics
ThemaingoalofBIistogetactionableinsightsthatleadtosmarterdecisionsandbetter
businessoutcomes.Therearethreetypesofdataanalytics(descriptive,predictive,and
prescriptive)thatcanhelpusersachievethisgoal.
Descriptiveanalyticsisretrospective.Itfocusesonwhathashappenedinthepastto
understandthecompany’sperformance.Thistypeofanalyticsisthemostcommonand
wellunderstood.Coupledwithagooddataexplorationtool,suchasPowerBIor
MicrosoftExcel,descriptiveanalyticshelpsyoudiscoverimporttrendsandunderstandthe
factorsthatledtothesetrends.Youdodescriptiveanalyticswhenyousliceanddicedata.
Forexample,abusinessanalystcancreateaPowerBIreporttodiscoversaletrendsby

customers?”,“Whatisthecompany’ssalesbyyear,quarter,month,andsoon?”,“How
doesthecompany’sprofitcompareagainstthepredefinedgoalbybusinessunit,product,
time,andothersubjectareas?”
Predictiveanalyticsisconcernedwithwhatwillhappeninthefuture.Itusesdata

patternsthatmightnotbeeasilydiscerniblebasedonhistoricaldata.Thesehidden
patternscan’tbediscoveredwithtraditionaldataexplorationsincedatarelationships
mightbetoocomplexorbecausethere’stoomuchdataforahumantoanalyze.Typical
dataminingtasksincludeforecasting,customerprofiling,andbasketanalysis.Data
miningcananswerquestions,suchas,“Whataretheforecastedsalesnumbersforthenext

Finally,prescriptiveanalyticsgoesbeyondpredictiveanalyticstonotonlyattemptto
