2.3. Advantages and disadvantages in practice
 2.3.1. Advantages in the internship

8

Internships are a great way for university students or anyone considering a
career change to obtain valuable work experience
Firstly, I could gain valuable work experiences. Interns have the opportunity
to apply acquired knowledge to real work experiences, witnessing firsthand the dayto-day job duties they can expect to encounter in our chosen field. In addition to
learning the specialized skills of a particular field, transferable skills such as
communication, teamwork, and computer proficiency are also obtained in an
internship, fully preparing interns to enter the workforce upon graduation.
Secondly, I also developed and refined skills. Interns can learn a lot about our
strengths and weaknesses during an internship period. Interns was given useful
feedback from supervisors and others who are established in the field, and offer a
unique learning opportunity that we may not have again as a working adult. Ask
questions, observe, and take risks to get the most out of our internship training
experience.
As an intern, I was surrounded by professionals in the industry. It is more than
just about earning credit, getting a grade,…; the internship period provides me an
opportunity to learn from the people around me by asking questions and acquiring

useful knowledge.
Last but not least, it was also a transition into a job. As far as I know, an
intern who makes a favorable impression could receive an offer down the line when
an opening occurs. The interns like us can take an opportunity to be an official staff
with a well-paid job as well as a good-working environment as Phu Ben Tea
Company Limited.
 2.3.2. Disadvantages in the internship
Fistly, due to lack of office skills, I got some difficulties with how to use the
photocopy machine, printer or some skills when calculating formulas in Excel..
Therefore, I had to spend time studying how to use them and it wasted a lot of time
and led to inefficiency in work.

9

Secondly, although I have been well-prepared for specialized vocabulary in the
tea field, there was still a great number of complicated terminologies in machines,
tea producing terms. Besides, I was assigned to translate some documents while my
knowledge of these sectors was limited. I usually got trouble to understand
Vietnamese documents. Most of the sentences were quite complicated, so it requires
for analyzing document carefully
On the other hand, let consider about the financial problems. One of the biggest
concerns for students these days is their finances. Education is expensive enough
and many need to find paid employment over the summer in order to offset the cost.
Therefore, all of these factors should be considered before choosing an unpaid
internship.

PART 3: THE DIFFICULTIES IN TRANSLATING LABOR CONTRACT AT
PHU BEN TEA COMPANY
3.1. Rationale

Under the Labour Code 2012, a labour contract means an agreement between an
employee and an employer on a paid job, working conditions, and rights and obligations
of each party to the labour relationship.
Labor contract translation requires intensive and extensive knowledge of laws, a
translator apart from thorough understanding of professional aspects must have good
command in exact use of legal terminologies and legal writing style in their translation,
and each country should have specific regulations on assessment of translations to ensure
that translated versions are accurate, clearly understood, and transparent in comparison
with the source text.
Thus, it is essential to take into accounts linguistic viewpoints as well as those of
labor contract categories in the translation of documents. Importantly, I hope that some
extent my study can offer a thorough understanding about terminology in legal text as
well as help company in translation of this field terms.
3.2. The roles of labor contract translation at Phu Ben tea company

10

English is now known as the global language of trade and commerce – as it
has been in the past few decades. This has affected many aspects of the modern
world. The English language became known due to colonial expansion, and since
then it has become the standard language for all global and official communications
– even those with a variety of native languages. Now, this expansion continues
thanks to the internet and has become a medium through which the majority of
businesses do business.
Having an excellent knowledge of English has become a vital aspect for any
employee’s career if they want to be successful. This is especially true for any
international students who are seeking better career prospects in an English
speaking country. As a result, English is definitely the preferred language in the
business community since business communication has gone global and the

majority of business partners do not speak the same native language. To meet the
demand of manufacturing and business activities, translation is very necessary.
As a student majoring in English at Hung Vuong University, I was very
fortunate to have two months and a half to do practice in Phu Ben Tea Company as
a translator. The Company is a foreign joint-venture company, so English translation
plays a key role in most activities in the Company.
However, English language is characterized by distinctive features not
commonly found in everyday English. Some of them may be the cause of problems
to the comprehension and translation in term of labor contract translation texts.
Therefore, I got many difficulties from this work in the internship time, in which the
most difficult is translating labor contract. Therefore, in this report I would like to
point out my own difficulties and find out solutions to improve the translation.
3.3. Some labour contract translating activities at Phu Ben company

11

During the internship period, I was acquainted with the work in the company.
I was assigned to do some office work such as arrange the document file, stamped
text, type the computer, print the document.
Instructor gave me some English documents about orders, contracts,
machinery and documents in the Company. I always try my best to complete all
assigned tasks. This is actually a great chance for me to get precious lessons and
experience in translation.
3.4

The problems of labour contract translation
Translation in general has a huge effect on people’s everyday life. Labour

contract translation in particular is of paramount importance because it takes place

in international institutions and organizations.
3.4.1. Difficulties in lacking the basic knowledge of labor contract :
During the time of probation at Phu Ben Tea Company Limited, I met many
difficulties in lacking the basic knowledge about translating contract document. Due
to my limited knowledge about this field, when I read the source texts of
employment contract, I do not get well-understand about its content. After that I
need to ask the staffs to explain these terminologies for me.
Hereunder is the illustration example in a book of contract business which I
translated for company:
“As the aforesaid duties, the employee is obliged to strictly comply with the
provision of this agreement, may not misappropriate the employer’s property, keep
all information entrusted to him / her confidential and have to adhere to the
general Code of Conduct that governs all relations with co-employees, clients and
partner.”
This is translated into Vietnamese as follows:
“Tương tự các nhiệm vụ nêu trên, người lao động có nghĩa vụ tuân thủ
nghiêm ngặt các điều khoản của thỏa thuận này, không được chiếm đoạt tài sản
của người sử dụng lao động, giữ bí mật tất cả thông tin được giao cho và phải tuân

12

thủ Quy tắc Ứng xử chung dành cho tất cả các mối quan hệ với đồng nghiệp,
khách hàng và đối tác.”
For example in English :
“The employee is entitled to unpaid maternity leave for a maximum period
of 4 consecutive months commencing at any time from 4 weeks before the expected
date of birth unless otherwise agreed upon or on a date as certified by a medical
practitioner.”
This is translated into Vietnamese as follows:

“Người lao động được nghỉ thai sản không lương trong thời gian tối đa 4
tháng liên tục bắt đầu vào thời điểm từ 4 tuần trước ngày sinh dự kiến trừ khi có sự
thỏa thuận khác hoặc vào ngày có xác nhận của bác sĩ.”
As shown in those examples above, the syntactic arrangement in the source
text is quite complicated. The underlined words in the source text are in passive
form while they are translated in active form in the target language.
3.4.2. Difficulties in limitation of English vocabulary and choosing words.
Vocabulary learning is an essential part in foreign language learning as the
meanings of new words are very often emphasized, whether in an academic
environment or in an office environment. Without using the sufficient lexical words,
it will lead to the readers’ misconceive of the employment contract.
Most employment contracts in enterprises such as tea-exported company,
especially agricultural terminologies should be applied frequently as Phu Ben Tea
Company Limited, the translation of lexical words will be very challenging.
There are a lot of new terminologies which need to be translated, therefore, I
have to use the dictionaries and check the internet frequently as its useful tool
during my translating process. Under the pressure of time, I have to make my works
meet the deadline of work. Thus, limited English vocabulary is the main difficulty
which is affecting my work.

13

Moreover, to express the content of the document exactly, I have to choose
suitable words carefully and I need to consider very carefully words before using
them. This problem will be shown as following :
English
Seasonal labor
Casual work

Vietnamese
Lao động thời vụ
Công việc tạm thời (Tình trạng có việc
làm tạm thời mà khơng có giờ làm đều
đặn hay hợp đồng lương)
Trợ cấp thất nghiệp
Trợ cấp thôi việc
Điều khoản bồi thường
Theo các điều kiện của hợp đồng
Hợp đồng khơng có đền bù
Hợp đồng lao động tập thể

Unemployment benefit
Severance allowance
Consideration
Under the terms of the contract
Contract without consideration
Collective contract of labour

3.4.3. Lack of skills and experience in labor contract translation
Labour contract translation requires not only deeply understanding of
linguistic aspects and corresponding subjects but also logic-thinking to ensure
deeply the knowledge about characteristics and nature of legal language. Besides,
learning experiences from others is very necessary to deal with some troubles in
process.
For example:
Synonyms these words are commonly used in labor contract translation in
English language, but in Vietnamese they are not very typical for using in this field.
Therefore, "the terms and conditions" should be translated as " điều kiện ", "null
and void" will be described as " vô giá trị/ không hiệu lực " or the phrase "give,

devise and bequeath" should be translated as "để lại".
3.5.

Some techniques to deal with translation problems

3.5.1. Improving knowledge of specialized terminology
English vocabulary enrichment can be searched through many resources. The
data sources obtained from reference books, research journals, research reports,
such as the internet source related to the particular field. Translators should find out
many kinds of books, dictionaries and documents. Only by reading a lot of books
and documents, translators understand and translate the source language.

14

Analysis general books about field of contract signing such as: “Hiệu lực
của hợp đồng” written by Dr. Lê Minh Hồng, “Hình thức của hợp đồng” authored
by Dr. Lê Minh Hồng, “100 mẫu hợp đồng kinh tế Việt-Anh” penned by author
Đức Yên,…

English Instruction for Contract Drafting book is a useful resource for
readers in drafting English contracts.

15

Drafting and Analyzing Contracts: A Guide to the Practical Application of
the Principles of Contract Law. The purpose of this book is to apply the principles
of contract law to the drafting of agreements.
The books listed above are written in both English and Vietnamese for easy

reference and study. From there, readers can understand the amendments to general
provisions on the form of the contract, regulations on the compulsory form of the
contract, understand the ways to deal with different legal consequences for different
forms of violation, prescribing the statute of limitations for lawsuits regarding the
breach of the contract form. There are the useful resource for readers in drafting
English contracts.
In order to improve professional knowledge, one of the best methods is to
learn from the boss and colleagues. Intern should not hesitate to ask the boss or
colleague because each person will be a good teacher to help they gain an in-depth
knowledge level. Remember to share the experiences with the teammates because
talking to each other is also a great way to learn back and forth.

3.5.2. Enrich the English vocabulary about specific fields
16

Studying terminology is the foundation of all subject fields. Apart from
creating solutions to the terminological difficulties which is the challenge that many
specialists or non-specialists encounter, it paves the way for the development of the
languages. In addition, terminology words improve the quality of communications,
either internationally or nationally.
Firstly, the solution is to enhance the English vocabulary about specialized
fields for being a good translator. Translators should prepare list of new
terminologies relating to the professional aspect before working in this company.
Translators also have to study terminology to learn how terminological resources
(i.e. human resource, term banks, glossaries, technical, etc.) can be employed to
make more consistent and coherent translations.
On the other hand, for problem-solving the lack of language skills, we should
study carefully about administrative documents terminologies and other
terminologies by accompanying the experienced interpreter and the foreign experts.

3.5.3. Learn carefully about contract translation
Before the translation of contract, read the contract carefully to figure out the
transparency of the document. Translators might read the document to understand
what they will be translating, and determine the context of the text. We might also
need to use documentation techniques to find resource materials as aids in order to
translate the text.
Contract documents are also the legal documents and if they are valid, they
can be taken to court. That means translator can be related to legal problem for the
provision of contract.
3.6.

Experiences gained during internship period

As my internship draws to a close and I reflect back on all I have learned, I
realize what an excellent experience this has been. I gathered much knowledge in
the classroom, but a hands-on approach has been valuable. It has served as a
beneficial ending to my formal education.

17

Working in the enterprise enabled me to understand some aspects of being
successful as an interpreter. The first thing I realized was that communication is
usually an essential aspect to success. It is also important for an individual to have
the ability of multi tasking during the working hours. This will make people flexible
in the workplace. In company, it usually mandatory to ask the right questions at the
appropriate time. On the other hand, I also realized that it is important maintain
punctuality in order to be successful. Another key to success entails that an
individual has to have a professional attitude in order to fit in the competitive
market

During this time, I had to establish my objectives as I worked. The first
objective was to attain the knowledge on the manner in which enterprise/company
works and carries out its practices. The other objective is to have depth knowledge
in interpretation work.
Moreover, I had the opportunity of observing the heads of different
departments reacting to issues which affected their departments directly which
helped me in sharpened solving-problem skills.I gradually being able to think
critically about situations means you form judgments and make decisions based on
reason, often in an innovative or creative way.
In order for the company to stay on the competition, it needs workers who
are critical thinkers . They need the staffs who can make short conclusions from a
range of data and discriminate between helpful and fewer useful details to resolve
an issue or make a choice. In my internship I learnt to analyze Data, extracted
informations and put them in use to improve business operations, suggested creative
ideas and solutions according to my understanding of different aspects inside the
company.
The only way to gain experience, and move up in the working world is to be
driven, focused and to have a will to never give up. Throughout my experiences, I
was able to gain a better understanding of how languages tied into the aspect of
business. I know that the details that I learned through the period with Phu Ben Tea
Company Limited will be very valuable in my future when choosing a career path.
PART 4 : SUGGESTIONS FOR PRACTICE SITE AND UNIVERSITY
4.1.

Suggestions for Phu Ben Tea Company Limited

During the internship period at the company, the group of internship
students have received many supports from company site and we truly appreciated

18

it. Below I would like to suggest a few ideas to help the company to improve the
working environment of Phu Ben Tea company in the future.
 4.1.1 The considering of expand the branding work of Phu Ben Tea

Company:
When I had chance work at Phu Ben Tea Company, I realized that the brand
recognition on the social media was not good, the website has not provided enough
information that consumers want to read. During the Digital Age, social media is a
powerful tool to promote Phu Ben Tea company limited to potential customers and
gain valuable insight through ‘social listening’. Through it, the company can find
out what customers are saying about, gain insight into their behaviour, identify
keywords and trends that appeal to their target market and also improve customer
service. Social media can help the company to promote their business profile and
attract new customers.
For example, Facebook is the reigning champ of social media sites, as the top
number one where everybody connect and share online Facebook page is a great
free marketing tool for businesses. Open a Company page which using Facebook
page tool – not just offerings good products and services, but also by sharing links,
images, and post will give a better sense of a business’s product and mission.
 4.1.2. The consideration of starting an E-commerce Business:

Phu Ben Tea company’s business and production situation are still facing
many difficulties because the offline sales channel was limited globally due to
COVID-19 epidemic. Therefore, I would like to suggest that that the Company
should switch to online sales to find suppliers and supplies of goods in E-commerce
because it is not limited in space and time.
4.2.

Suggestions for Hung Vuong University
From my perspective, I believe Hung Vuong University has done a

tremendous job in implementing the internship program into English Lingustic
Students. The Foreign Language Department was helpful when I had questions, and
I highly appreciated this. I believe this program made the experience mirror that of
an actual job search.
19

Based on what I experienced during the internship period, I would like to offer
some suggestions for the Department to progess programs.
The first suggestion is student should be taught for soft skills development. The
lack of students' soft skills will prevent students from working in an international
environment. Therefore, university should provide students with such skills. There
are six nesscesary soft skills for professional success career: Communication,
Enthusiasm, Teamwork, Critical thinking or problem-solving, and Professionalism,
Networking.
Secondly, university should help students understand more clearly about
educational and career plans by balancing between learning theory and practical
activities. Training time should be separated into two periods of internship to make
the chance for students apply what they learned into their work. It helps students
realize their potential inside and also their drawback. Hence, they will better their
shortcomings and have well-oriented work in the future.
On the other hand, Hung Vuong University should strengthen extracurricular
activities and creating favourable conditions for student to communicate with
foreigners. This suggestion will make students become more enegetic, creative and
flexible in the any working environment and own the cultural diversity.
Lastly, the Foreign Language Department should adjust about the giving
name time for the report title. In fact, students are required to mention the title of

their report before they go for occupational settings. This leads to a problem for
students since they do not grasp what kind of duties they will take responsibility in
the company. From my observation, one week is the necessary time for student to
approach to the work then they will choose what subject they are write for. This
makes sure that the chosen subject having the strong connection between a title of
their report and their obligations in the company.
With these suggestions for teaching program, I hope that they will be concerned
and considered for the better standard of education.
