Order Anura - Frogs
• Adults lack tails and have four legs
• Body size ranges from 2-3 up to about 15 cm
• Aquatic larvae usually present
• Larvae are basically herbivorous
• Adults are never herbivorous
• 5 Families known from Cat Tien
• 30-40 species known from Cat Tien
Family Bufonidae - toads
• Stout frogs with warty bodies
• Pectoral girdle is arciferal
• Skin includes very toxic alkaloid poisons
• Often have bony ridges on head
• Often have elarged poison glands on head
• May reaach 12 cm body length
• Two species in one genus known from Cat Tien
– Bufo galeatus
– Bufo melanostictus

Family Microhylidae
• Small to modest sized frogs
• Larvae lack oral disks and denticles
• Pectoral girdles firmisternal with reduced clavicles
• Most species spend their days in leaf litter or soil
• Color patterns often variable from day to night and
among individuals
• Webbing between toes reduced or absent

• Completely firmisternal pectoral girdle
• No fusion of metatarsals
• No intercalary cartilages but toe pads possible

Family Rhacophoridae
• African and Asian treefrogs
• Usually have large toe pads
• Have ossified intercalary cartilages
• Have firmisternal girdle
• Range from small to 8-10 cm in body length

• Usually spend their days in the trees
• Some species nest in tree holes
• 4 genera and about 6 species known from Cat Tien
