NEXT GENERATION
optical wireless
SOLUTIONS
Vol8 No5
October/November 2001
S
ince our company was established
in 1980, we have laid claim to
being the market leader in Australia.
Now, the June 2001 research report
into the Australian structured cabling
industry from UK-headquartered
BSRIA, has well and truly confirmed
that position.
One of the many reasons we
continue to dominate the cabling
market in ‘end to end’ total solutions
and mix-and-match categories, is our
commitment to staying at the
leading edge of product innovation
and quality. Products we made 20 years ago are
still installed and performing effectively today.
We continue to use the same LSA-PLUS core
technology, the same mount frames, the
difference is that our products have evolved to
increase the bandwidth demanded by our
customers.
Other reasons for our success include surety of
supply, product functionality, R&D, logistics,

workplace safety and the environmental
management systems we have in place.
We’re also making great inroads into the fibre
sector with our HIGHLIGHT range of products
and are excited about the new markets opening
up to us with our Optical Access family of next-
generation optical wireless solutions. Trevor
Kleinert details the comprehensive product line
we can offer for affordable IP over Optics.
IT’S ALL PART OF THE SERVICE
Is your network operating to its maximum
potential? How do you tell? Loss of
communications can have disastrous results for a
business. On page 8 we outline the testing
mechanisms in place for our Premis
NET
solutions.
We have long participated in
telecommunication industry bodies and
endeavour to keep our partner installers,
distributors and customers well informed about
changes in legislation and industry trends via our
annual HighTIME conference, Club KRONE, our
websites and the pages of Network News. In this
issue, on page 10 Peter Meijer explains the ACA’s
A-Tick legislation and what it means to you.
Like other market leaders, KRONE has to cope
with ‘would be if they could be’ companies who
cannot innovate and produce world-leading
technology themselves so they copy successful

products with look-alike products. Peter Davis’
article on page 6 makes interesting reading.
Imitation is, after all, the highest form of
compliment.
Thank you for your support in helping us to
outstrip our rivals and secure our market
leadership.
Sincerely
Craig Jones
CEO

T
he June 2001 BSRIA Report into the
structured cabling market in Australia
confirms that KRONE Australia, has the lion’s
share of the market.
According to BSRIA, we are the leading
supplier of Structured Cabling solutions to the
local market.
KRONE dominates in the two major structured
cabling markets, the ‘end to end’ total solutions
market and the mix and match market.
The high market acceptance of our superior
product range has ensured that the KRONE market
share is more than double our nearest rival.
What’s more, BSRIA predicts that KRONE
Australia will maintain its market leadership in
2001 and beyond.
Despite Australian Bureau of Statistics figures
reporting a decline in the income from Australian

manufacture of IT&T products, KRONE Australia
goes from strength to strength.
Since our company was established in 1980,
we have laid claim to being the market leader in
Australia. Now, with the data published in the
latest BSRIA Report, that position has been well
and truly confirmed.
We have built our growth on the skills and
expertise of our local workforce. Our R&D efforts
are locally managed, producing high quality
goods aimed at both the domestic and overseas
markets.
In 2000 we introduced KRONE Premis
NET
LAN
copper cable, making us a one-stop shop for
end-to-end networking solutions. Our
revolutionary Premis
NET
TrueNet™ solution also
leads the way for those enterprises that demand
the guarantee of zero bit error data throughput
performance. It’s obvious from the BSRIA Report
that the industry has embraced this range to
such an extent that, on its own, KRONE
Premis
NET
now already has a double digit
market share.
It is also great to see our recently introduced

fibre solution racing to within sight of a market
leader that has been active in this segment for
many years. This indicates to us that you, our
customers, prefer to deal with the overall market
leader with the biggest commitment to
Australia.
We believe surety of supply, product
functionality and quality, R&D and logistics have
played a vital role in our success.
In the 20 years since KRONE was established in
this country, we have had no major disruption to
our production. Australian manufacture means
short product supply lead time and shorter
reaction time for fluctuations in product
demand.
We are also able to provide local support to
our customers from sales offices in the major
capital cities of Australia and via a network of
distributors for our Premis
NET
range.
The BSRIA Report adds its seal of approval in
this 20th Anniversary year for KRONE. Besides
achieving record sales figures that have grown
by nearly 50 per cent over the previous year, we
also received ISO14001 certification for our
Environmental Management System and two
Australian Electrical and Electronic
Manufacturers’ Association AEEMA awards for
‘Excellence and Innovation through the Supply

Chain’ and ‘Excellence in Developing Support of
new Business Applications.’

n the June/July issue of Network News we
introduced our MASTERMINDER rack-mounted

cable minder that will save installers over 80% of
cable management looming time. With the
introduction of our new five-ring Patch Cord
Minder, we have now extended our range of cable
management products even further.
KRONE Australia set out to develop a new Patch
Cord Minder with an emphasis on speed and ease
of installation whilst maintaining KRONE’s strict
criteria on quality and functionality. With its
unique patent-pending mounting feature the new
Patch Cord Minder simply clips into the rack’s
mounting holes – eliminating the need for cage
nuts – and a screw is inserted at each end to
secure the product to the rack.
Designed to fit all racks where cage nuts are
normally utilised, the Patch Cord Minder is an
entirely injected moulded product, yet is as strong
and durable as metal.
The Minder, which takes up 1RU, comfortably
secures in excess of 32 Cat6 or Cat5e patch cords
and the five jumper rings have a depth of 85mm.
Competitively priced, it is available in black to
match the Keystone range or patch panels, or in
dark grey to match the HIGHWAY range of patch
panels.
So to avoid your cabinets from becoming a
tangle of spaghetti cabling, install

M
any would say copying is regarded as the
highest form of compliment. Consider how
many of the works of the Old Masters -
Rembrandt, Reubens, Van Gogh, Da Vinci,
Monet and others - have been forged over the
centuries.
Like most market leaders, KRONE has to cope
with ‘would be if they could be’ companies who
cannot innovate and produce world-leading
technology themselves so they copy successful
products with look-alike products.
Since 1928, we have invested in our
intellectual property in the telecommunications
industry and, for more than 25 years, we have
set the international standard for connectivity in
networks around the world.
Our KRONE LSA-PLUS
®
technology has been
the standard in more than 100 countries around
the world with over 100 million connections
supporting the quality, reliability and
performance our customers demand from their
telecommunications infrastructure.
Those are our credentials. A look-alike is, as it

sounds, a copy and cannot provide the
combination of intellectual property, reputation,
technical expertise, high quality components,
support and service that continues to maintain
our market leadership.
If you are offered a KRONE copy module, we
would like you to consider the following Q&A,
ask the same questions of your supplier and
match the responses with our own. Ask for
manufacturer’s specifications, proof of product
history, compliance with local and international
standards, and availability of warranties.
Q. How much do I pay for genuine KRONE
products compared to the copies?
A. Our Australian-made modules cost no more
than the imported copy. Ask your vendor why
inferior copy products are the same price as a
genuine original - the locally produced KRONE
product.
Q. Does the copy comply with international
and national standards?
A. All our modules comply with the ACA
compliance requirements and carry the ‘A-Tick’
mark (see separate story on page 10). Ask your
vendor for proof of compliance.
Q. What is the plating specification?
A. All KRONE modules have 5 microns of silver
on the contact for reliability and long life. Ask
your vendor for the manufacturer’s specification
for the copy he is supplying to you.

Q. How many times can you re-terminate
the module?
A. All KRONE modules can be terminated in
excess of 200 times, ensuring the longest
product life possible. This benefit is also an
indicator to the high level of engineering built
into the product. Some copy products indicate
up to 50 re-terminations but, again, ask your
vendor for the manufacturer’s specifications.
Q. To what standard does your proposed
module comply?
A. All KRONE modules are built to the stringent
standards set by various bodies including the
International Telecommunications Union (ITU)
and the International Standards Organisation
(ISO). Ask the supplier of the copy product about
how they comply to standards.
Q. Will your module support Cat 5,
broadband services like DSL or the emerging
Voice Over IP (VoIP) telephone protocol?
A. KRONE’s HIGHBAND
®
10 module has been
specifically designed to support these emerging
technologies. Ask your vendor for the
manufacturer’s specifications.

KRONE one, but doing so and achieving the same levels of quality,
reliability and performance is not.
BEWARE OF COPIES!
by Peter Davis
Sales and Marketing
Manager
KRONE Australia
Q. What is the termination force required
to terminate into the Insulation
Displacement Connection (IDC) slot wires?
A. The high level of engineering into all KRONE
products ensures minimum termination force is
required. This eliminates termination stress
which, over time, relaxes, creating an open
circuit. The high termination force required on
copy products will create termination stress
leading to open circuits. It also damages the
contact point making re-terminations
impossible.
Q. What are my installation options?
A. All KRONE modules are capable of mounting
on our Profil™ or backmount frames. Copies are
usually backmount only, thereby loosing the
flexibility offered by our Profil™ system.
Q. What advantage does the genuine
Profil

system have over the copies?
A. Profil™ is less expensive than copy
backmount frames and provides an easier and

safer method to mount modules. Modules can
be removed without the use of a tool and hinge
providing easy access when installing cables. The
distribution frame has been engineered to be
safer, eliminating the chance of injuries caused
by the sharp edges of mounting frames. Copy
products cannot offer the advantages of Profil™
mounting.
Q. Where is your module manufactured?
A. Nearly all KRONE module products and their
mounting systems are made in our Berkeley Vale
facility on the central coast of New South Wales,
providing surety of supply and ongoing service
and support to our customers.
Q. How can I be assured of a quality
product?
A. We implement best practice procedures in
every facet of our product design, development,
testing, manufacturing and marketing. In 2000
we received two of the inaugural Excellence
awards from Australian Electrical & Electronic
Manufacturers’ Association (AEEMA) for
Innovation through the Supply Chain and for In-
house Laboratories. Our manufacturing facility is
accredited to ISO9001 ensuring that every
product leaving the plant meets stringent
Australian and International standards. We are
also certified to ISO14001 for our environmental
management system. Ask your copy vendor
what quality standards they adhere to.

Q. What sort of Warranty am I entitled to
with your module?
A. All KRONE products attract the standard 12
months warranty. In addition, extended
warranties for up to 20 years can be offered. Ask
your copy vendor what extended warranties are
available.
Q. What additional advantages are
available if I use genuine KRONE products?
A. By using our product, contractors and end
users are entitled to access to the KRONE
countrywide technical support network. You
also receive a guarantee that our complete range
of accessories, mounting systems and tooling are
fully compatible with each other. Contractors,
through their membership of Club KRONE, also
receive support including product and industry
information, news of special promotions, help
desk assistance and access to our website
product information. Ask your copy vendor what
additional advantages you can expect from the
importer of imitation products.

potential? How do you tell? Ensuring that you
are constantly in communication with your
trading partners, suppliers, government
ministries - right down to the ‘person in the
street’, has become a vital ingredient for
successfully doing business in today’s
marketplace. Loss of that communication can
have disastrous results.
KRONE has in place testing mechanisms for
our TrueNET (Platinum Cat6T and Silver Cat5eT)
and other Premis
NET
solutions (Gold Cat 6, and
Bronze Cat5e) to ensure you maximise the
potential of your network.
Hand held testers, used by KRONE endorsed
installers, are appropriate for measuring the
electrical parameters of the cabling solutions.
These are called passive testing devices.
To really test the data-carrying capability of the
infrastructure, you need to generate data at one
end and measure how much is successfully
received at the other. This is where KRONE
provides the active testing expertise using our
Vigilant Networks’ Big Tangerine and Netcom
Smart bits active testing equipment.
For TrueNet installations we provide a five-year
warranty for the data throughput at zero bit
error rate.
To achieve this guarantee, the network must

be installed by KRONE endorsed installers who,
using passive equipment, test the electrical
parameters of the network.
As part of our TrueNet service, KRONE
conducts random audits during the course of the
implementation using our active equipment.
These tests ensure the correct installation
practices are in place and we can also assist the
installer to identify the presence of any non-
compliant devices or non-standard installations.
The most advanced active product on the
market, Big T, uses a Time Domain Reflectometer
to generate pulses down the channel. This unit
analyses input impedance in both the Frequency
and Time domains. It is a diagnostic tool capable
of highlighting both existing and potential
problems in the channel caused by poorly
matched components and imperfections in the
actual cabling.
Smartbits has the ability to transmit Ethernet
packets - 10BaseT, 100BaseT or 1000BaseT -
down to an installed link. It can determine if
errors are occurring as a result of the physical
characteristics of the installation.
Active testing provides the best indication of
the performance of the cabling and its ability to
carry data signals without any loss.
When the installation is up and running,
KRONE comes in again and conducts active

ONGOING TRAINING A MUST
It is a requirement that a KRONE endorsed
installer should have 50 per cent of its data
cablers attend and pass our certification courses.
For more than 20 years, KRONE has had a
presence on the various authorities and bodies
that regulate the telecommunication industry
standards.
We are constantly updating our Master Cabler
and Designer courses to the highest standards to
ensure they meet the Telecommunications
Industry system of Cabling Provider Rules (CPR).
Certification is for two years and we
recommend that all endorsed installers enrol

new staff in our courses to ensure the company
quota of 50 per cent of KRONE endorsed data
cablers is maintained.
Be warned! We must stringently adhere to
regulatory requirements to provide the best
result for our end user customers. If an endorsed
installer falls behind its quota, or is found lacking
in some way - and if we can’t devise a mutually
satisfactory solution - unfortunately, we will have
to withdraw endorsement from that
organisation.

T
he A-Tick is a compliance mark developed by
the Australian Communications Authority
(ACA) for telecommunications equipment. It has
been introduced to give consumers confidence
that a telecommunications product meets the
safety and technical standards set by the ACA.

The A-Tick mark indicates that a product can
legally be connected to an Australian telecom-
munications network. The A-Tick label appears
on a range of products including structured
cabling infrastructure products, fixed and mobile
phones, answering machines, facsimile machines
and modems.
The A-Tick is a protected symbol and can only
be used in accordance with the conditions laid
down by the ACA.
WHO ADMINISTERS THE A-TICK?
The ACA regulates the Australian com-
munications industry, protects consumers and
promotes fair competition, efficiency and
technical excellence.
An important part of the ACA’s role is to
ensure that consumers are provided with a
diverse range of telecommunications equipment
that meets the safety and technical standards set
by the authority.
The ACA works closely with telecom-
munications suppliers and the community to
establish policies, procedures and regulations
suited to the diverse and constantly evolving
telecommunications industry and its consumers.
WHAT PRODUCTS REQUIRE THE A-TICK?
Telecommunications products must have an A-
Tick or display the labels of previous labelling
schemes such as the Telecom Authorisation or
AUSTEL permit. Products without an A-Tick or

the previously accepted labels may be unsafe
and cause damage when connected to
the network.
It is a condition of the Cabling Licence and, for
Registered Cablers under the Cabling Provider
Rules (CPR), that all cable, cabling product and
customer equipment such as customer switching
systems, phones, external and internal modems
and answering machines must meet the ACA’s
Labelling Notice requirements. The A-Tick is part
of those requirements.
The A-Tick compliance label consists of two
parts: the A-Tick logo and other information that
identifies the manufacturer/importer. This latter
identifier is usually the Australian Compliance
Number, such as KRONE’s N355, or it can be the
organisation’s business name or trademark on
the product.
Customer Cabling is a separate issue and,
under the ACA’s Labelling Notice, at least every
2 metres on the sheath, the company identifier
and the product identifier must be shown.
KRONE’s customer cabling and related
customer equipment including cables, patch
cords, plugs, sockets, modules and connectors
fall under Category A22 of the ACA Labelling
Notice and therefore comply with technical
standard ACA-TS008-1997 (or AS/ACIF S008 as
it will become) at compliance level 2.
Rest assured, our Asia-Pacific R&D Test

Laboratory located at our regional headquarters
at Berkeley Vale on the New South Wales central
coast conducts the necessary tests to ensure our
products exceed TS008 requirements. The
KRONE Lab is certified and audited by the
independent international Underwriters
The ACA warns consumers that using telecommunications products that
don’t carry the A-Tick label is not only unsafe and potentially damaging to
the network, but may also meet with penalties.

audited by Standards Australia under ISO9001
further ensuring that all the required testing is
done to show compliance with local standards.
Then, ACA auditors review these findings.
Unlike several importers that keep their
records overseas, our Compliance Folders are
kept in Australia at the KRONE Labs. These
Compliance Folders contain product
identification, all the necessary test results and
the official Declaration of Conformity as required
by notices under section 407 of the
Telecommunications Act 1997.
If a consumer has purchased a telecom-
munications product overseas (apart from a
mobile telephone), the product will not have the
A-Tick label and, under the existing legislation,
they will not be able to safely or legally connect
it to an Australian telecommunications network.
This rule also applies to importers of
telecommunications product.
WHAT HAPPENS WITHOUT WITH THE
A-TICK?
The ACA is conducting a marketing campaign to
advise consumers that telecommunications
products must have an A-Tick label. If they don’t
they may be unsafe and could cause damage
when connected to the network. Consumers
are also being warned that it is illegal to connect
equipment that does not carry a compliance
label and penalties can be imposed.

A small percentage of products available today
may carry an AUSTEL permit or a Telecom
authorisation. These are also safe to connect.
Consumers are also being warned that, in
addition to the safety risks, products that do not
carry the A-Tick may deliver poor sound quality
and unclear speech and they could have
problems in dialing the 000 emergency number
or other telephone numbers.
HOW DO I KNOW IF A CABLE IS AN A-TICK
APPROVED TYPE?
Cable and cabling product is approved if it has
an A-tick symbol on it (or on its packaging) or it
is listed on the ACA’s Certified Components List.
WHO DO I CONTACT IF I SEE NON-
COMPLIANT CABLING WORK?
Contact the ACA’s Cabling Team on (03) 9963
6824 or (03) 9963 6823 or e-mail
For complaints to be
actioned you will be requested to put the
complaint in writing.
WHERE DO I FIND REFERENCE MATERIAL
ON THE A-TICK?
Information about the ACA’s Labelling Notice
requirements is available from its website at:
www.aca.gov.au and it tells Australian
manufacturers and importers of foreign
equipment what conditions apply to the
products for use in Australia.
An easy-to-read, consumer-oriented brochure

about the A-Tick is available at retail stores
across Australia or from the ACA state and
regional branches. Another brochure has been
developed for suppliers and retailers highlighting
the importance of the A-Tick in ensuring
consumer confidence in products.

SOLUTIONS FOR A BANDWIDTH-HUNGRY MARKET
C
orporate Networks Essen
(CNE) has offered
telephone and data com-
munications to its customers
since its foundation in 1996. Its
original charter was to provide
service solely to the municipal
functions of the City of Essen,

Germany.
The decision was
subsequently made to expand
CNE’s customer base to
include both the corporate and
private sectors. It was clear that the addition of
these new markets would require the creation of
a powerful and reliable network infrastructure,
so an ambitious and pioneering project was
undertaken.
Working with Optical Access, CNE deployed a
cost-effective Internet Protocol (IP)-based
solution centred on Wave Division Multiplexing
(WDM) technology in combination with Gigabit
Ethernet, port trunking and IP routing. The
result: a robust and reliable Metropolitan Area
Network (MAN) with a coverage area of 30
kilometres, the first of its kind in Europe.

and with a minimum of fuss. This speed of
deployment, combined with the high bandwidth
provided by our solutions, makes the TereScope
system especially attractive for new service
providers who wish to deploy an all-IP network.
FIBRE OPTIC CONNECTIVITY
The FiberDriver offers affordable WDM and long-

haul Optical Networking solutions for carriers,
service providers, cable TV operators and
utilities.
The products support WDM technology,
allowing the creation of multiple channels over a
single fibre strand. The single fibre technology is
especially attractive for bandwidth-intensive
applications where fibre strands are a limited
resource. In applications where physical
separation of links is required for information
security reasons, different networks can travel on
the same fibre strand separated by a different
wavelength.
BANDWIDTH TO THE CUSTOMER’S
PREMISES
Our OptiSwitch product range is ideal for
broadband service providers, it enables
bandwidth distribution and provisioning for all IP
networks both at the central office and the
distributed location. This unique Switched Circuit
Multiplexer technology also
enables the direct connection
of an internal IP network over the ‘last
mile’ directly to the provider’s
equipment, allowing a simple user
access and provisioning interface.
The products also allow a
provider to up-scale a user’s
bandwidth in Mbps increments on demand,
allowing a centrally managed IP network at a

fraction of the cost of other technologies. The IP
termination features in the OptiSwitch support
user authentication, authorisation and accounting,
using the provider’s existing billing systems to
allow for customised services for each user.
Direct connection of the OptiSwitch ports to
our TereScope or FiberDriver products allow the
provider to offer a complete, cost-effective
metropolitan solution.

Today, CNE Telecom provides telephone, data
and Internet services over a network of 1,100km
of copper and 130km of fibre. CNE’s network
reaches some communities outside the City of
Essen and future deployment will extend the
network even further out to new regions.
WDM AND GIGABIT ETHERNET AT THE CORE
Ten years ago, the city planners of Essen
envisioned the growth of communication needs
and began installing multimode fibre cables
throughout the city. They used FDDI to create a
backbone linking the Token Ring (LANs) of each

municipal building. Over time, as technologies
advanced, singlemode fibre replaced most of the
distance-limited multimode fibre, and Ethernet
LANs replaced the Token ring networks.
However, the FDDI technology remained along
with leased lines and ISDN links to isolated
segments of the network. This infrastructure was
the foundation of CNE’s carrier network.
When CNE decided to upgrade the network
and replace the older FDDI with one of the new
high-speed technologies, they based their
decision on several criteria. The major

requirements included high throughput, critical
redundancy and ease of use. The solution had to
be compatible with the Ethernet switching
components already in place and had to operate
on the existing fibre plant.
Different technologies were considered for the
backbone. ATM was initially considered but
proved too expensive to implement when the
total costs of equipment, training and
maintenance were calculated. So CNE began
searching for a complete Ethernet solution.
Together with Optical Access, it came up with a
design using the existing fibre optic
infrastructure while providing much higher

speeds using new technologies. Optical Access
provided a wide range of competitively priced
10/100/1000Mbps Ethernet switches and
routers in addition to affordable WDM
technology.
Using WDM devices, CNE was able to carry
four channels of Gigabit Ethernet over an
existing pair of singlemode fibres. With Optical
Access long-haul fibre technology, CNE was able
to cost-effectively extend high bandwidth
connections into areas previously serviced only
with leased lines. CNE had plans to offer
premium data and voice services to its customers
and it needed a network that could handle this
sensitive traffic.
Rüdiger Hartwig, Data Director at CNE
Telecom commented: “Modern switching
technology with Gigabit Ethernet together with
a WDM backbone allows us to provide Voice
Over IP service right to the individual workplace.
“Optical Access offered a solid campus
background. It could bridge the distances
needed by us to cover the Essen area. We can
now use a new definition for LAN.”
OPTICAL ACCESS’ WDM TECHNOLOGY
WDM combines multiple signals and transfers
them over one pair of fibre, increasing the
utilisation of each fibre. WDM can handle any
protocol including FDDI, SONET, ESCON, ATM,
Fibre Channel or Gigabit Ethernet.

The need for additional bandwidth can be
satisfied without the expensive or time-
consuming laying of new cables. WDM ensures
fast and simple expansion of existing networks.
Wavelength multiplexers have been in use for
some time in carrier applications. Today, this
technology can also be used economically in a
LAN/Campus/Enterprise backbone and open
new ways to increasing performance.
One important element considered by the
Essen network designers was security. Carrying
information from different municipal and
corporate entities, data production and
confidentiality was an important factor. This
concern was assured through he WDM4 device,
which provides physical separation between
networks. Stefan Ploder, Optical Access
Germany’s Vice President of Sales, Western
Region, explains: “Although WDM4 is physically
one unit it provides a logical and physical
separation between networks by using different
wavelengths for each signal.”
A FAILSAFE COMBINATION
The combination of port trunking and WDM
complement each other. If one fibre strand is cut,
then the port trunking feature diverts all data
through the other strand avoiding the loss of
valuable data.
By successfully implementing an IP-based
network using Gigabit Ethernet and WDM, the

City of Essen helped define the new city carrier
model and attained a robust and reliable MAN,
the first of its kind in Europe.
