E
very day our customers are faced with
increasing demands from their
workforce for bandwidth-hungry
applications to maintain their competitive
advantage in a cut-throat world. Most of
this software can only be used to its full
potential with advanced network
connections such as 100 Megabit Fast
Ethernet (now virtually accepted as the
standard for new installations) and
Gigabit Ethernet.
To truly ensure network speed and
efficiency, every component from the NIC
(network interface card) to the server
needs to operate as effectively as possible. The
foundation on which a network relies is the
structured cabling infrastructure and our
industry is poised to adopt the long-awaited and
much-drafted Category 6 standard.
At KRONE, thanks to our close relationships
with our customers and our appreciation of their
network needs, we are more than ready for the
proposed Cat 6 standard. Indeed, our portfolio

of Cat 6 products has been available since our
flagship range, TrueNet, was launched in 1999.
Our premium PremisNET C6T solution offers a
range of components to take our customers to
Gigabit Ethernet and beyond.
When TrueNet was introduced as the first end-
to-end structured cabling system specifically
designed to prevent throughput loss in local area
networks it was revolutionary. It still is!
Now it is time for our next revolutionary cable
product. The KM8 RJ45 Modular Jack features
an innovative cable-management system that
ensures reliable and repeatable termination. In
this issue, Peter Meijer and Glen Johnston
provide more details of the KM8 Jack, part of our
new TrueNet Cat 6 portfolio of products.
Our proven expertise, combined with an
extensive copper and fibre portfolio, enables us
to tailor solutions to specific customer demands.
We listen to our customers and products such as
the KM8 Jack are the result.
KRONE Australia is the only major
telecommunications connectivity manufacturer
in the country. We have been operating here for
21 years and our Australian made products are
everywhere – from the telephone exchange to
the outlet in the home or business.
I don’t need to tell you that times are tough in
telecommunications. That said, I’m proud to say
that KRONE Australia is more than achieving its

sales forecasts and we are still the preferred
connectivity provider in this country. I’d like to
say thanks to our customers who have voted for
KRONE with their orders and enabled us to
succeed where other brands have failed to grow
their market share.
Sincerely
Craig Jones

T
he answer is simple – it’s our reputation for
quality, reliability and performance.
More than 20 years ago, Telecom (now Telstra)
started installing KRONE modules throughout its
network. This practice continues today and there
is hardly a phone or Internet connection made in
Australia that doesn’t pass through a KRONE
product.
As with Telstra, the vital communications
networks of the buyers of KRONE products are
safeguarded by unique manufacturing techniques
that only KRONE has perfected and patented.
LSA-PLUS CONTACT PRINCIPLE
This patented contact principle has become the
standard cable connection method in more than
100 countries around the world. In excess of five
billion connections have been made in

telecommunications networks from Antarctica
to Alaska. (See Diagram 1).
Over the years we have seen companies try to
copy the KRONE methodology. While this is
flattering, we are yet to test a competitive
module that complies with KRONE’s strict quality
control procedures.
MECHANICAL ROBUSTNESS
The figures in Diagram 2 (See diagram 2
overleaf), clearly show how positioning contacts
at 45° to the axis of the wire allows more copper
to remain in place, which strengthens this
potential point of weakness.
SILVER PLATING
The KRONE Series 2 and HIGHBAND modules
are plated with five microns of silver – which is
up to five times more plating than most
competitors. The reason KRONE has always
used silver (in place of cheaper tin) is because of
its superior electrical and environmental
properties. Silver has 6.9 times the electrical
conductivity properties of tin. To the end user,
this means a faster, more reliable transfer of
data. Silver is an extremely hard material, which
is necessary in ensuring that when the insulation
is ‘displaced’ on termination the plating remains
intact, and is resistant to wear. This is why we
can guarantee a reliable contact even after 200
re-terminations.
SUPERIOR PLASTICS

KRONE only uses the best plastics in the
production of modules, all of which are rated
UL94V0 for flame retardancy. This means the
modules will self extinguish and not continue to
burn giving off toxic gases as other similar
products may do. This safety rating is not a legal
requirement in Australia, however, it is only
prudent for buyers to beware of cheaper copies.
All KRONE plastics are toughened to allow for
extremes in temperature (-40° to +80°), enabling
the modules to be used in all types of climatic
zones without affecting the functionality of the
product. In addition, our plastics are PVC-
resistant. You should beware of products not
using PVC-resistant material – they are prone to
crack and weaken when terminated because
most wires use PVC insulation.
PROFIL MOUNTING
Only KRONE can provide the versatile, easy-to-
use, patented PROFIL mounting system. The use
of stainless steel rods ensures corrosion
resistance for unrivalled years of service. Be
aware that alternative materials, such as plated
metals, cause problems with electrical resistance
and are not capable of earthing to allow
overvoltage protection.
The PROFIL system allows the modules to be
placed in situ and swung out for easy

termination, reducing installation time. There are also no
sharp edges on the frame to injure the installer or end user.
STANDARDS-COMPLIANT
All of KRONE’s modules comply with local and International
standards. In addition, our modules are tested for ACA
compliance by third party test houses and are also UL
(Underwriters Laboratories) listed.

QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR
VENDOR WHEN BUYING
MODULES.
Q. How much do I pay for genuine KRONE products
compared to the copies?
A. Our Australian-made modules cost no more than the
imported copy. Ask your vendor why inferior copy products
are the same price as a genuine original - the locally
produced KRONE product.
Q. How many times can you re-terminate the module?
A. All KRONE modules can be terminated in excess of 200
times, ensuring the longest product life possible. This
benefit is also an indicator to the high level of engineering
built into the product. Some copy products indicate up to
50 re-terminations but, again, ask your vendor for the
manufacturer’s specifications.
Q. Will your module support Cat 5, broadband services
like DSL or the emerging Voice Over IP (VoIP)
telephone protocol?
A. KRONE’s HIGHBAND
®
10 module has been specifically
designed to support these emerging technologies. Ask your
vendor for the manufacturer’s specifications.
Q. What advantage does the genuine
Profil

system have over the copies?
A. Profil™ is less expensive than copy backmount frames
and provides an easier and safer method to mount modules.
Modules can be removed without the use of a tool and
hinge providing easy access when installing cables. The
distribution frame has been engineered to be safer,
eliminating the chance of injuries caused by the sharp edges
of mounting frames. Copy products cannot offer the
advantages of Profil™ mounting.

n response to growing demand for higher
speed networking capabilities, KRONE Australia
has introduced a new TrueNet Category 6 (C6T)
network cabling solution. The new C6T solution
addresses the need for superior speed, reliability
and traffic handling in enterprise network
infrastructures.
Our TrueNet Cat 6
portfolio of products
comprises a KM8 RJ45 modular jack
complemented by C6T Cable, C6T High Density
Patch Panels and our C6T Patch cords.
A cable manager secures the cable pairs in
place up to the termination point, ensuring the
cable geometry is secure, resulting in
dependable Cat 6 performance. It isolates and
directs the twisted pairs to their specified
contact. Insulation clamping ribs hold the wire
securely and isolate the contact area from
vibration and mechanical stress. The KM8 allows
all four pairs (or eight conductors) to be
terminated simultaneously without using the
conventional KRONE tool.
We developed this addition to our TrueNet
portfolio of products to effectively eliminate all

the problems associated with traditional
termination methods and actually make
installation easier and more efficient.
We have also introduced Cat 6 24-Port and
48-Port High Density Patch Panels. These are
designed to work seamlessly with the new KM8
Jack and KRONE TrueNet cable and patch cords,
completing the C6T TrueNet solution and
maintaining Category 6 performance and
quality.

he combination of Rosemount with Penfolds
and Lindemans brought together three of the
world’s premier global wine brands, creating one
of the largest wine companies in the world with
export markets in 80 countries.
In its first year of operation, Southcorp Wines
has more than 7,500 hectares of vineyards under
production in the winemaking regions of the
Barossa and Clare Valleys in South Australia, the
Sunraysia region of Victoria and the Hunter,
Mudgee and Orange districts of New South
Wales. It delivers more than 10 million cases of
premium wines for an estimated revenue of
more than AUD$1.1 billion.
At the time of the merger, Rick Allert,
Southcorp’s Chairman, said: “Rosemount is an
excellent strategic fit with Southcorp and also
delivers significant cost savings and synergies
through the consolidation of two businesses. In
particular, we anticipate benefits from the
combination of sales and distribution, product

efficiencies, improved purchasing power and
reduced administration costs.”
To upgrade and future-proof the IT&T network
infrastructure of key winemaking, distribution
and production sites, Southcorp’s Byron Moult-
Smith, Neil Martin and Graham Whitfield are
working with KRONE PremisNET endorsed
installer, Gary Tennant, of Fibre and Data
Networks (FDN).
“We are progressively installing KRONE
PremisNET Bronze Cat 5e and KRONE fibre
solutions,” said Byron Moult-Smith, Communications
and Technology Support for Southcorp’s South
Australian and Victorian operations.
“We outsource the remote management of
our local area and wide area network
infrastructure to IBM GSA whose main data
centre is in Tullamarine, Victoria and they, in
turn, work with various Southcorp IT&T project
managers such as Neil, Graham and myself.
“I am based at Magill in South Australia which
is the network hub for the state’s Nurioopta
region and our main distribution centre at Outer
Harbour in Adelaide.”
Southcorp Wines’ new International
Distribution Centre is located at Outer Harbour.
The 30,000 square m site dovetails with the
adjacent Mackenzie Transport Centre which
handles Southcorp’s container packaging.
“As well as being integrated for the smooth

and climate-controlled transfer of wines in
containers, the communications network for the
two centres is also connected by a KRONE
PremisNET structured fibre optic system,” said
Mr Moult-Smith.
“We actually run two networks throughout
the Southcorp group – one for our information
systems such as financials and data and voice
and the other, which is site dependent, is a
SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition) system for line management of the
winemaking.
Southcorp Wines has 100 sites around the
world and they are connected in varying degrees
to the network. The number of people per site
ranges from one or two in a small vineyard to up
to 450 at Nurioopta in the Barossa.

“We use a Telstra OnRamp service for sites with
25 to 30 people on a local area network around a
dedicated local server,” said Mr Moult-Smith.
“The major links for our accounting and
warehouse systems go back to IBM GSA’s
Tullamarine site.
“Most of our fibre communications networks
are local campus-style connections for sites that
span anything up to one kilometre in width, such
as Nurioopta and Karadoc.”
Neil Martin, Communications Co-ordinator at
Nurioopta explains that the local area network for
which he is responsible has 12 network nodes
using KRONE equipment.
“Nurioopta is a 40-acre site in the Barossa
Valley,” said Mr Martin. “We serve as a crush and
bottling plant for our Southcorp vineyards of
Kalimna, Eden Vale, The Waltons and Seppeltsfield.
“Primarily, though, we are responsible for premium
and super premium Penfolds wine production.
“KRONE is virtually the industry standard for
structured cabling solutions which is important

to us because our organisation is widespread,”
said Mr Martin. “Some of our sites are in the
middle of nowhere but you can always count
on one local Telstra technician to have a KRONE
tool in his back pocket to provide support to
the equipment. KRONE is also a local
manufacturer which is important when it
comes to surety of supply.”
Graham Whitfield is located in the Sunraysia
region of Victoria at Karadoc near Mildura. As
Electrical Supervisor, he is responsible for the
automation and control of the Karadoc site.
“Karadoc was the old Lindeman’s site,” said Mr
Whitfield. “This year we’ll be crushing between
50,000 and 60,000 tonnes of grapes and
producing all the cask products for the group as
well as some bottled lines.
“We have 150 people using our network and our
staff numbers swell to 250 during the vintage. We
use a Telstra OnRamp service and KRONE PremisNET
Cat 5e as well as KRONE fibre patch panels.
“Like Nurioopta, Karadoc also runs a SCADA
system through a fibre optic programmable logic
control (PLC) network.
“Our SCADA system controls tank temperature
monitoring, the blending process, bottling line
progress and various other winemaking
processes, feeding the production status back to
the local winemaker or engineer at a number of
PCs distributed across the site,” said Mr Whitfield.

If you’ve enjoyed a wine from Rosemount,
Penfolds, Lindemans, Seaview, Coldstream Hills,
Hungerford Hill, Seven Peaks, Seppelt, Devil’s Lair,
Tollana, Queen Adelaide, Leo Buring, Killawarra
or Wynns Coonawarra, you’ve tasted the fruits of
the labour of Southcorp’s award-winning
winemakers, harvested on KRONE network
infrastructure.

t Andrews War Memorial Hospital at Spring
Hill, Brisbane, is one of Queensland’s most

acute care hospitals, specialising in tech-
nologically advanced surgical and medical care.
It has earned a reputation through its
commitment to the provision of the highest
quality healthcare.
Doctors and staff at St Andrew’s are using
cutting-edge information technology to improve
communication and efficiency and thus it is vital
St Andrew’s communications network infra-
structure is able to cope with existing and
emerging technologies.
At present St Andrews is undergoing a major
redevelopment, which is complex because it
involves converting the compact inner city site to
provide new facilities while maintaining the
operations of the existing hospital.
Stage one of the development has recently
been completed and consists of a nine-storey
building containing four ward floors and five
levels of carparking.
The information technology project team for
stage one comprised Steve Englart, Information
Services Manager for St Andrews, who worked
closely with communications consultants,
Norman Disney & Young and voice and data
cable installer, TriState.
“We have progressively moved into the
building over the past few months as the builder
has finished various ward floors,” said Steve Englart.
“In time, the whole of the existing hospital will

be refurbished or rebuilt. We had used KRONE
Cat 5 products over a number of years in other
areas of the site and were endeavouring to
standardise on a company infrastructure for our
communications network.
“The project team looked at higher
technologies such as Cat 6 and options such as
pair managed, RJ45 and Patch By Exception
solutions from KRONE and other suppliers.
“St Andrew’s runs both a clinical local area
network (LAN) and an administrative LAN. We
needed the flexibility to patch between LANs
and wall outlets while limiting the number of
active switching components. Given the crucial
nature of our communications, data throughput
was extremely important and we wanted a
solution that was going to last – possibly for ten
years,” he explained.
“KRONE’s TrueNet Silver Cat 5eT solution was
our choice for horizontal connectivity and we are
using KRONE fibre for vertical cabling,” said Mr.
Englart.
St Andrews automatically receives our
exclusive ‘20/5’ warranty. This incorporates a 20-
year all-inclusive industry standards compliance
warranty including parts, labour and technical
support plus a five-year throughput warranty
guaranteeing zero bit error rate performance
from the structured cabling channel.

Price, performance, the known reliability of the brand and
TrueNet’s capacity to handle future technologies were key
factors in St Andrew’s decision.
“In the long run, if you can standardise on infrastructure
and infrastructure suppliers, it makes your job so much
easier. The value in having just one manufacturer’s warranty
rather than many is incalculable,” said Mr Englart.
The new building’s four floors of wards bring an
additional 80 beds to the hospital’s existing 230 beds.
Depending on its location, each bed has approximately four

data outlets – for phone, clinical LAN, administrative LAN
and the Internet.
As with the other areas at St Andrews, the new facility patches
back to the central computer room in an adjacent building.
“We have a total of 540 outlets at this stage. The Internet
is not yet connected to the patient bedside – but it is
something that has been requested in patient surveys and
the infrastructure is now in place. St Andrew’s aim is to
provide expanded support to doctors, their patients and
families, in every sense. Our new network facilitates our
achievement of this goal,” said Mr. Englart.

K
RONE have developed cable management to
a micro level where it really counts – at the
RJ45 jack. Not only is this important for
improving installation time and testing
procedures but also for ensuring that a high level
of repeatability, reliability, interoperability and
backward compatibility is achieved.
Cat 6 components rely heavily on good
installation techniques to maintain the
manufacturer’s provision of ‘above standards’
headroom. Work practice variations that are
tolerated on Cat 5e components can cause
unacceptable variations on Cat 6 components.
Our new TrueNet KM8 series of Cat 6 RJ45
modular jacks not only meets, but exceeds all

current requirements of the draft Cat 6
standards. No longer do cable contractors need
to worry about how well each termination is
going to perform. Installation variation is no
longer a factor.
The cable manager accepts pairs of wires into
assigned holes so that the pairs go straight to
their allotted contacts without the wires
untwisting. In Australia, where the T568A wiring
scheme uses Blue and Orange on pairs 45/36,
there is a need to give maximum separation to
these pairs. The KM8 cable manager does this
for you automatically when correctly installed.
The pair relationship is completely controlled, for
all combinations, by the cable manager.
The pairs can only go to their correct positions.
Terminations are repeatable and always reliable.

INSTALLATION IS A SNAP
1. Strip the sheath and feed the pairs into the
appropriate holes in the cable manager.
2. Pull the pairs into the manager so that the twist is
kept all the way up to the IDC turret. This ensures the
impedance of the termination will remain as close to the
cable impedance as possible. Cut off excess wire with
small side-cutters.
3. The cable manager is now ready to terminate the
wires on to the IDC contacts with the press of the
fingers or the aid of a hand clamp.
4. Fit the cable manager onto the back of the socket so
that the arrow on the cable manager aligns with the
arrow on the black part of the socket.
5. Place the blue cover over the assembly and press
together until the cover is down. There is no need to
press too hard. Check that the 2 catches at the bottom
of the assembly have engaged.
6. The completed assembly can remain with the blue
cover left on for future use, or the blue cover can be
removed without affecting the performance of the KM8
Cat 6 Jack.
The KM8 RJ45 Modular Jack‘s innovative design
simultaneously terminates all eight conductors.

For the network administrator, the end result is
improved signal integrity, secure connection at one of
the most vulnerable links in the cabling system, and the
optimal throughput you need for bandwidth-hungry
applications. Cabling contractors get reliable,
repeatable terminations in the field, virtually eliminating
installer variations.

he agreement with Commander, the
industry’s key telephone system market
leader, is estimated to be worth one million
dollars annually to KRONE Australia.
“While we have used KRONE products
extensively in previous years,” said Wayne Frost,
Technical Engineering Manager, Commander
Communications, “it was time to review our
operations seeking opportunities to streamline
the business and achieve cost savings.”
KRONE held the business against competitive
pitches from a number of other vendors. “None
of the other products could offer the
price/performance benefits and the scalability of
the extensive range of KRONE solutions,” said

Mr Frost. “We opted to standardise on them
because of their reliability and ease of use. Most
of our workforce come from a Telstra
background and are experienced in using KRONE
products – that’s also a definite advantage.
The delivery model appealed to Commander
Communications, too. “We buy from KRONE’s
distributor, MMEM, and can purchase on
demand rather than carrying huge amounts of
inventory. That provides significant cost savings
by eliminating the need for large stockholding
facilities and additional administration
personnel,” said Mr Frost.
KRONE Australia manufactures more than 90
per cent of the products we sell in this country.
What’s more, 80 per cent of KRONE’s automated
machinery is made in Australia with a high
portion of that being developed and produced
by the company’s engineers.
For more than 21 years we have been
dedicated to giving service to our customers and
it is gratifying that Commander has
acknowledged that commitment by

network from passing on hazardous voltage to another network –
a vital safeguard when a carrier interconnects with other business
networks.
The LIU facilitates the safe interconnection of carriers’ networks.
This allows passage of the intelligent AC signal while preventing
transference of hazardous voltages. It is primarily used around
sensitive equipment, or for isolation between carrier networks
ensuring that quality data throughput is produced.

The unit consists of two KRONE disconnection modules, a
printed circuit board and ten isolation transformers, and complies
with the AS/NZS 3260 standard (approval and test specification –
safety of information technology equipment including electrical
business equipment).

ABOUT COMMANDER COMMUNICATIONS
The Commander business was established by
Telstra over 20 years ago to market, sell, rent
and support a range of business telephone
systems to Australian businesses. Commander
Australia Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary
of Commander Communications Limited,
acquired the business in 1998 and listed on the
Australian Stock Exchange.
Every day, over one million people use a
Commander product or service to do business
and today the company supports more than
125,000 Australian enterprises. The company has
one of the largest, business-dedicated, technical
forces in Australia with nearly 400 on-road
service technicians and more than 180 customer
service personnel in national call centres.

eeking the ideal set for a science fiction movie

set in the next century you might easily settle
for the futuristic global headquarters of
pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline.
Stunning looks and architectural features are
matched by state-of-the-art technical facilities,
including a future-proof structured cabling
system that almost defies belief.
GlaxoSmithKline is the world’s largest
pharmaceutical company, not to mention the
number one over-the-counter medicines
company in Europe. The company’s roots reach
back to 1715 and its brands include household-
name products such as Lucozade, Ribena and
Horlicks. When you consider that GSK
manufactures almost 4 billion packs a year of
over 1,100 different brands and sells into 140
global markets, its £300 million headquarters no
longer looks exceptional – even though it is.
Supporting all this activity is the colossal
structured cabling infrastructure that provides
the central nervous system of GSK House and
merely listing its vital statistics is enough to take
away most observers’ breath.
To ensure total future-proofing the installation is
specified exclusively to Category 6 standards and
for guaranteed maximum data throughput makes
use of KRONE’s TrueNet structured cabling system.
As such, it is without doubt the largest TrueNet
installation in the world. There are 40 thousand
outlets over 39 floors across the site using 20

kilometres of fibre, 8,000 fibre terminations and
two million metres of TrueNet cable.
The installation task, carried out by KRONE
PremisNet Partner, Pandi, took a whole year, with
up to 85 of Pandi’s people working on-site at any
one time, as Pandi’s technical director explained.
“What distinguishes this particular contract is
not mere statistics but the way one handles a
project of this scale and its unique design
requirements,” he declares. “Because the
system is KRONE HighBand it is mostly jumpered;
patch cords are used sparingly and only by
exception. Conventional RJ-45 patch cords are
used only at the desk top and these are also to
Cat 6 TrueNet specification.
Commenting on the choice of KRONE’s
TrueNet GSK’s John Graham added: “It was very
much a commercial decision, we wanted the
best future-proofing we could get and KRONE’s
TrueNet was the only option with a throughput
warranty. Most importantly it was no more
expensive than the other non-throughput
warranted Cat 6 systems.” The data centre itself
is approximately 1000m2 in size and can
accommodate up to 580 equipment cabinets,
housing the Meridian telephone system, SAN
and file servers.
Cat 6 TrueNet cable and multimode fibre are
taken to every closet, with all patching for data
and voice carried out on KRONE Highband

frames. The fibre is terminated with KRONE
MTRJ connectors on multi-mode and KRONE LC
on single mode.

M
embership has many benefits for our
customers. By using their Club KRONE
points members have been able to put the
margin back into their businesses. This is what
our members have to say about some of the
advantages of Club KRONE!
“Expert Data Cabling (EDC) has been an active
member of Club KRONE since the inception of
the program and has been enjoying the benefits
for a long time. In its many years of business,

EDC has been involved in a number of reward
programs but has found Club KRONE requires
very little administrative effort, yet produces a
great reward.
“We have found the program extremely
beneficial when tendering for a job that has very
little margin. It is easy to log on to the website,
e-mail or make a phone call on the 1800 number
to receive a quick tally of points and then
complete and forward on the redemption form.
This has assisted us on a number of occasions in
being the successful tenderer because we have
been able to offer competitive prices due to the
assistance we receive from Club KRONE in the
form of free product.
“EDC is a communications company
specialising in data, voice and optical fibre
cabling. To remain competitive, we require up-
to-date information about new products,
technological advances and changes to relevant
standards. We find that the e-mail notifications
received from Club KRONE enable us to keep
abreast of these changes and keep our staff well
informed.

Expert Data Cabling
“I find there are so many benefits Club KRONE
offers us. The main advantage would have to be
the free product we receive for earning our
bonus points. With the Club KRONE website, it

is so easy to log on to our membership details
and check our current points. If I have made a
large purchase I can even check the website to
confirm the points from that particular invoice
have been added to my account. The web is also
great for online redemptions; it’s easy to use and
makes the task quick and simple.
“I also find the e-mail product/training
notifications are very valuable. They provide us
with information on upcoming courses so I can
send new staff to be trained.”
Roslyn Gibson

(a division of Anitech Pty Ltd)
“This business has been operating for 15
years. While our main focus is on telephone
installations, relocations and small business
systems, we are also growing in the area of data
installation for small-to-medium-sized
enterprises.
“Club KRONE has been beneficial to us in a
number of ways — starting with the free
product we receive for accumulating reward
points to the useful information we receive in
the form of the Network News magazine. The e-
mails you send us also help keep us up to date
on new products and training. I find it (the
method of delivery of information) very useful
because it is non-intrusive and easy to store for
later use.

“I have also just sent one of my employees to
a training course that I won through Club
KRONE last year.”
