uring a time that has been difficult
for everyone in the Communications
Industry, KRONE has managed to

Continuing to lead the way with innovative
technology we have recently joined forces with
Clipsal to bring the Electrical Industry out of
the dark ages. Clipsal, the major player in the
Electrical Industry, selected KRONE to design and
manufacture components for their new “Quick
Connect “ general purpose outlet. As Australia’s
leading manufacturer of communications and
industrial wiring systems, we were the
obvious choice.
Utilising KRONE’s research and development
expertise with IDC (Insulation Displacement
Connector) technology, the “Quick Connect”

allows for reduced termination time for electrical
connections. KRONE have utilised the same
technology in our Terminator range of products
which revolutionised the termination method of
control systems in the mid 1990’s.
The impressive attendance at our HighTIME
2002 conference confirmed our position as a
market leader. More than 100 customers from
our Distribution partners to Installers, and End-
users to Consultants, attended; making this years
conference the most successful in the seven year
history of these events. Delegates were shown
around our extensive premises at Berkeley Vale,
on the NSW Central Coast, before being
transported to the shores of the picturesque Lake
Macquarie for our Industry seminar.
Due for release in the fourth quarter of 2002,
the latest development in the HIGHBAND
evolution, HIGHBAND 25, is a high density cross-
connect solution that will set new standards for
performance and functionality.
The HIGHBAND 25 portfolio features the
traditional KRONE LSA-Plus contact principle in a
compact design. The disconnect feature allows
for “Patch By Exception”, and greatly reduces
the cost of the overall cabling solution. The
innovative design of the mounting and jumper
management system provides superior cable
management.
In this issue, we will bring you up to date with

the latest cabling standards as well as our
success with the Optical Access range of

oth the International Standard Organisation,
where it is contained in ISO 11801 Edition 2,
and the American National Standards Institute,
where it is contained in TIA/EIA 568-B.2-1, are
printing their documents at present ready for
commercial distribution (sorry, no more free
copies of drafts).
Australia and New Zealand will be following ISO
11801 Edition 2, so the new AS/NZS 3080:2002
will be printed containing ISO 11801 Edition 2
plus some useful appendices tailored specifically
to Australian and New Zealand markets.
Apart from the performance levels of Permanent
Links, Channels and Components, the new
standard will also include sections on the selection
of optical fibre cables for either a structured
approach, or an application specific approach.
The structured approach allows for the
installation of one of 3 channels (OF300, OF500,
OF2000) using one of 4 cables (OM1, OM2, M3,

OS1) and will allow any application in the group
to run on the channel.
The application specific approach will focus on
modal bandwidth for MMOF to establish the
maximum distance for that specific application.
Consequently, other applications may not work
over the same distance.
Of these two approaches, KRONE recom-
mends the Structured Cabling approach as being
the best overall solution.
Other new sections of the Standard include
distance calculations for both horizontal and
backbone runs. No more “just a simple 90m
maximum” rule. Factors such as patch/jumper
and equipment cord length, as well as
temperature length de-rating are included.
PATHWAYS AND SPACES EXPLAINED
A revised AS/NZS 3084, Pathways and Spaces
Standard, was submitted for committee
comment. This updated draft standard contains
a lot of useful information in the appendices
about the best, and least expensive way to
provide the correct infrastructure on which to lay
the new Cat 6 cabling to achieve the best
performance.
I would consider it compulsory reading for all
consultants, designers, builders and estimators,
and all those installers that want to understand
the full picture of how the cabling and the cable
pathway should interact.

Public comments are presently being reviewed
by the working group, under Chairman, Peter
Guenther. Expected due date: September 2002.
A second revision of AS/NZS 3085.1,
Administration of Communications Cabling
Standard was submitted for public comment,
closing June 2002. The standard recommends
the minimum level of documentation and
records needed for 4 different classes of
premises size:
Class 1 Single distributor
Small business
Residential
Class 2 Single building
Class 3 Multiple buildings
Class 4 Large corporations
Several buildings
Across a country
Enhancements to the content include:

This standard also contains a comparison of

everal years ago we categorised our
PremisNet offering into Bronze, Silver, Gold
and Platinum. From this we found that our base

Category 5E level (Bronze) and our Category 6
Truenet level (Platinum) were our customers
choice in the majority of cases.
Due to the recent publication of the Category
6 standard and the tremendous acceptance of
our TrueNet “Zero Bit Error” philosophy, we have
simplified our PremisNet solutions offering into
two levels, “ENTERPRISE” and “GLOBAL
LEADER”.
In place of the current Category 5E offering
KRONE will introduce the PremisNET
“ENTERPRISE” solution. The ENTERPRISE
solution provides a medium to long term
communications infrastructure for small to
medium size companies and workgroups. For
an economical investment, ENTERPRISE meets
all the needs of todays networks, with
adequate bandwidth up to 1 gigabit on copper
and optical components, and also encompasses
11 Megabit on wireless.
Built on the ever-reliable Highway Range of
products, KRONE’s Enterprise solution provides
Network Managers with the cabling platform to
run all of today’s network applications. Included

ne hundred years ago, on December 9,
1901, inventor Arthur Pitney filed a patent
application for the first postage meter. Today,
Pitney Bowes Inc. holds more than 3,400 patents
worldwide in mail and document management
that cover a range of technologies including
shipping, printing, encryption, funds
management and security.
From the postage meter to Postage by Phone,
digital metering technology to Internet Postage ;
every major invention in the mailing industry has
originated at Pitney Bowes.
A consistent focus on inventing and applying
technology to enhance the value, reduce the
cost and increase the efficiency of mail and
document management helps Pitney Bowes
deliver maximum value to its customers, partners

applied to the new communications network the
company is putting in place in Australia.
While Pitney Bowes also manufactures
facsimile machines, its core business is built on
the efficient delivery of critical metering

information between its customers and its postal

In Australia, the company acts as intermediary
or agent between Australia Post and Pitney
Bowes’ customers, accounting for the receipts
and payments of postal funds that pass through
its franking machines and metering devices or
facilities. It is in the process of consolidating its
two Sydney offices into one national
headquarters and is also relocating its
Melbourne premises.

the imminent moves.
”To increase our productivity and more
effectively manage our critical partner and
customer service capabilities, we are
amalgamating our two Sydney offices.
Construction has commenced on the
refurbishment and expansion of our existing
premises at 95a St Hillier’s Road, Auburn and we
anticipate the move will be completed by mid
September; the Melbourne office re-location is
occurring simultaneously,” said Mr Low.
”It is imperative that the infrastructure for the
communications network we install enables us
to manage our business as efficiently as possible.
”Over a five-year period, our current cabling
infrastructure has deteriorated. Lack of network
schematics has resulted in a messy system of

cables. It takes far too long for our IT team to
locate the correct cables and implement even
the simplest moves, adds and changes,” said Mr
Low. “Fault finding among the maze of wires is
a major challenge, to say the least.
”For more than 200 Pitney Bowes employees
across all states of Australia, we manage
communications encompassing voicemail, e-mail,
the Internet, and file and print server access.
A national call centre will also be based at the
new Auburn complex with operators handling
customer meter enquiries, problem resolution
and technical queries.
”While cost was a driving factor in our
selection of a new system, product reputation,
reliability and the efficient use of the IT team’s
time were major factors in our decision process.
”After researching the market, we selected
KRONE Australia’s PremisNET Bronze Category

Exception methodology,” said Mr Low. “Stowe
Australia, will be installing the system for us,” he
added.
Patch by Exception (PBE) is not new. KRONE
Australia developed it as a product feature of its
HIGHBAND modules and has been installing it in
sites in the Asia Pacific, Europe and the United
States since the mid-1990s.
Candidates for the PBE methodology are
enterprises with a high density of RJ45 outlets
where cabling, unless managed correctly, can
become a jungle of patch cords. This, in turn,
causes problems for the network administrators
and slows down network moves, adds and
changes.
To redirect services, all the IT manager needs
to use is a short, one-metre-long patch cable. In
a simple plug-and-play motion they can override
the hardwired side of the HIGHBAND module
and re-connect to the required office area.

Periodically, the customer’s installer visits to
remove patch cords on permanent circuits and
replace them with jumper wire.
Another development that further contributes
to the acceptance of the Patch-by-Exception
solution is the virtual network hub. This means
that a network manager can control each
individual PC on the network and make any
moves or changes via software - without the
need to leave his or her desk. Nowadays, phone
services are almost always provided at every
workstation and in every room. When a person
moves offices, their telephone extension number
can be easily reallocated using the software on
the PABX.
Pitney Bowes Australia is currently in the
process of selecting a new phone system in
conjunction with new wide area network
infrastructure to provide national access for users
to the new customer relationship management
software, corporate financials and administration
systems PBA will be adding to its com-
munications network. “We will factoring the
KRONE PBE methodology into our specifications
as we look to procure the right solutions,” said
Mr Low.

s many of our customers have discovered,
the KRONE Optical Access range of products
offers significant advantages over leased lines

and other technologies, with no ongoing costs
and rapid deployment just some of the key
features.
KRONE’s Optical Access range of Free Space
Optics (FSO) equipment was launched in the
Australian market early this year and has already
experienced success with some high profile
installations.
PARRAMATTA LEAGUES CLUB - 155MB
TERESCOPE 3000 LINK & 10MB
ETHERLIGHT LINK
The customer required a 155Mb link to an
affiliated Rugby union club some 1.9km away.
The Terescope link presented a more cost
effective solution than that of leased lines.
The application provided a network link
between the 2 office areas, allowing security &
gaming information to be controlled from the
one location. In this situation the Terescope
option offered a payback period of 6 months,
with no ongoing costs.
Impressed with the 155Mb link installed
several months earlier, a number of new
opportunities were discovered and an
additional link was installed between the
Leagues club and a remote office location,
approximately 200m away.
ENERGY AUSTRALIA NEWCASTLE -
10MB ETHERLIGHT LINK
The main office area, in the Warners Bay

showroom, was not large enough to
accommodate current staffing levels so a nearby
building was leased for additional office space.
Even though the link distance was only 150m
the offices were separated by a concrete car
park, which would need to be trenched, or
under bored to run a fibre cable. The cost to do
this was prohibitive.
The Terescope option was selected over other
technologies as it offered the best performance
to dollar ratio.
KARIONG CORRECTION CENTRE -
10MB ETHERLIGHT LINK
A 10Mb link was required to link the
Administration building to the network in the
main detention building. The two buildings are
separated by an outside courtyard area,
comprising of a high security concrete triangle,
which made underground access impossible.
Free Space was the only suitable option, and
again the Terescope was the most cost-effective
solution.
COLORADO COLLEGE (QLD) -
100MB TS1 PAL LINK
Colorado Headquarters in Brisbane had a
requirement for a new training centre. The
current office space was already completely
occupied, so an adjacent building was leased for
the purpose. While this solved the floor space
problem, there was still the issue of

interconnecting the two networks.
The new Terescope 1 PAL (Passive Air Link)
from KRONE was selected as it offered 100Mb
Network speed for the same cost as alternative
10Mb systems.
The ever-increasing requirement for more bandwidth has many
business’s looking at alternative technologies for a cost-effective
solution to leased lines.

There are 2 models in the Terescope 1 range
suitable for distances up to 350m. This
revolutionary new technology differs from the
existing FSO systems, all the opto electronics are
contained in the active module in the
communications room and coupled to the
Remote Lens unit via fibre optic cables. The
advantage of this system is that no remote power
is required to the outside units, and high data
speeds can be transmitted over shorter distances.
FREE SPACE OPTICS COMPLIMENTS
EXISTING FIBRE RANGE
Following on from the success in the Eastern

states, an Industry seminar was held recently in
Adelaide to launch Optical Access in the South
Australian market. The seminar attracted more
than fifty Consultants, End-Users & Installers.
The Presentation was delivered via a “Live Link”
to demonstrate the technology.
John McEwen, KRONE Sales Executive, later
quoted, “The feedback regarding the OA
Seminar has been extremely positive, and the
product well received. I have a number of
Consultants and End-Users who have specific
applications where OA could be applied.”
As an outcome from the Seminar, the
Department of Education has purchased a 10Mb
EtherLight link to install between 2 office
locations in the Adelaide CBD.
It is now KRONE’s intention to release the
Optical Access range of products in other
markets throughout Australia. The Optical
Access Range compliments the extensive range
of Fibre Optic and wireless products available
from KRONE.
The Highlight range of high quality single and
multi-mode fibre optic cables deliver maximum
performance for the highest bandwidth
applications to the office or home.

Our tight buffered cable is constructed of flame
retardant LSOH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen)

which features nylon jacketing as standard, is
suitable for direct bury installations. Optional

class 2 laser specification. Our 48 and 72 port
patch panels allow for either rear or side cable
entry and feature strain relief points for loose

“Forget stripping cables back 50mm and
screwing in terminals. Quick Connect allows you
to insert the insulated conductors into the colour
coded terminals, click the sliders and that’s it, the
termination is complete.” This is done with a
normal Electricians screwdriver.
Quick Connect is available in the Clipsal
10Amp 2000 Series (2025QC), power outlets.
Each outlet can accommodate up to 4 sets of
cables. Each slider handles two cables at a time,
and can be terminated and re-terminated many
times. (Conductors must be trimmed back 6mm
before each re-termination). Quick Connect
power outlets will suit both 1.5mm and 2.5mm
solid, and stranded cables.

n the 18th June it was on again. For three
days, Rafferty’s Resort, on the shores of the
tranquil Lake Macquarie, just two hours north of
Sydney, was descended upon by more than
100 delegates.
Held annually, KRONE HighTIME brings
together the industry’s key players. Installers,
distributors, end-users and consultants are given
the opportunity to network on both a
professional and social level.
The 3-day conference kicked off with a tour of
the KRONE facility at Berkeley Vale, on the New
South Wales Central Coast. Delegates were then
shuttled to Rafferty’s Resort to enjoy an evening
of Las Vegas style entertainment. The

conference room was transformed to a mini
casino and delegates were entertained by
magicians, dancing showgirls and the King, Elvis
himself.
The theme of this year’s HighTIME Seminar
was “Consulting the Crystal Ball”. The
conference speakers were selected for their
expertise in various areas of the
telecommunications industry to help
provide delegates with an insight into
where the industry is going, and where
emerging technologies will lead us in the future.
The seminars covered topics such as Free Space
Optics, Cat 6 testing and the future of network
design.
Delegates spent the afternoon golfing, sailing
or deep-sea fishing before being entertained
over dinner by ex-wallaby and media personality,
Peter Fitzsimmons.
The feedback from all in attendance was
extremely positive, with delegates making the
most of the opportunity to learn, relax and
network with other industry members.
Thanks to all who participated in HighTime
