Unit 6: Writing a summary (100 words)
Task 1:
Read the article, “Preparing for your first job interview (p.176).
Follow steps 1-3 in “Writing tips” (p.175), then answer the
questions below
1. What’s the author’s purpose for writing the text?
- He’s explaining how to get ready for a job interview
2. What’s the thesis statement?
- However, there are some simple ways to prepare for this
challenging experience.
3.List 2 main ideas that support the thesis statement
 Main idea 1: You should make a list of the questions you
might be asked
 Main idea 2: Once you’ve got your questions, you should
then think about possible answers and practice responding
to them.
Task 2
2.1.Read the article, “Preparing for your first job interview”
(p.176) and the two summaries (p.177). Then complete the

- Summary 1 is better. Because it gives more information and
all of the information is correct. It is clear and easy to follow

Task 3: Practice: Writing a summary essay (100 words)
3.1. Write your summary of Reading 1, “From student to
employee: A difficult transition” (pp.156-157). Remember to
summarize important points by paraphrasing the author’s
purpose, thesis statement, main ideas, and conclusions. Use
reported speech to report the ideas of the author and others.
- In the article “ From Student to Employee: A Difficult Transition”,
Mina Alonso explains the issue about many recent graduates who
face with many difficulties which make them not to adapt easily in
the workplace and give them some advice. Firstly, she points out
that the work environment is genuinely not similar with school.
These students aren’t prepared for changing their thinking
analytically and making good decisions in the workplace.
Secondly, Alonso says that recent graduates had difficulty
adjusting to teamwork. In school, students work independently
and got marks based on what they had done compared with
workplace, they usually depend on their co-worker for success. In
conclusion, the author tells students to spend time on doing
internship, part-time job; analyzing information, learning to solve
problems skills.
3.2. Write your summary of Reading 2, “Making my first postcollege career decision” (pp.163-164). Remember to summarize
important points by paraphrasing the author’s purpose, thesis
statement, main ideas, and conclusions. Use reported speech to
report the ideas of the author and others.
- In the article "Making my first post-college career decision", the
author shares his experience about the change from college to
the workplace. First, he tells an intern at a big company which
teaches him a great deal of valuable skills and knowledge in job.
He also explained the reason why he chose this position. He

added that he had already known his career goals and his right
decision of job gives him a chance to develop his career path. In
conclusion, he supplies that he might use all the experience and
skills at that large accounting firm to improve himself.
