Macrame is very popular because it is easy to do.
The finished products are both beautiful and functional. Once you l e a r n the basic knots (and there are
only 6) you w i l l not only be able to follow any pattern,
but you w i l l also be able to look at macrame pieces and

see how they are made. T h e n you can make a n y t h i n g
•you see.
After you have gained some experience and you
desire to create your own designs, here is a h i n t : I n
general, you should cut your cords i n a ratio of 5 to 1 .
T h a t i s , cut each cord 5 yards long for every y a r d of
desired finished length. T h i s w i l l help you know how
to cut your cords w h e n creating your own patterns.

Many kinds of cord can be used. There are many new
synthetic cords available which are easy to use, and
very beautiful. I t is u s u a l l y important to choose a cord
of s i m i l a r thickness to the cord used in the pattern. B u t
in " L a T o u r , " we used cords of two different thicknesses to achieve two different effects. Here we had to
slightly modify the pattern to accommodate the diss i m i l a r thicknesses of cord. U s e your imagination, and
be daring.

Step No. 10: Here, either add a bead or tie 3 square knots
with 2 tie and 6 filler cords. Either way switch cords here
putting the longer cords to the outside. Tie 14" of h a h
knot twist, using 4 cords.

Materials:
500 y a r d s t h i c k white cord or 4/120,6/65, or 6/72 jute
1
3 " soldered r i n g

7" r i n g or hoop
1
19" r i n g
1
'/4" thick 24" diameter beveled edge piece of
glass
8
IV2" wood beads (optional)

Step No. 11: Tie 2 square knots using 8 cords, and add a
bead. Now repeat steps 8 through 11 with the 3 other
sinnets.
Step No. 12: Leave 2 long cords hanging on each side of
the bead or square knot. T a k e the ends of the remaining
4 cords, fold up in half so there are 8 cords coming down
(or 4 loops), and wrap i n place with a W2 yard cord. Cut
each loop, unravel it, and brush it out. T r i m to 9". T h i s
forms a small tassle. Do the same with all sinnets.

S t e p No. 1 : C u t the cords i n this manner:
24 cords 14 y a r d s each
40 cords 2V2 y a r d s each
2 cords 3 y a r d s each
27 cords 2 yards each

5 cords IV2 y a r d s each
Step No. 2: Wrap the 3 " ring with the 2 yard cord, and tie
an overhand knot with the ends. Fold all the 14 yard
cords over the ring. Place a 3 yard cord on each side and
make a 9" square knot loop as shown in Technique
Section. Be sure to include i n the loop the 2 ends of the
cord that wrapped the ring. Tie a wrap with a 2 yard cord
covering the bottom of the square knot loop.

oz

a

Step No. 1 4 : Divide in half each of the half knot twist
sinnets, and add to each half a 2V2 yard cord. Now there
are 8 working cords under each half knot twist. Tie a
square knot with the center 4 cords. Add 1 more 2V2 yard
cord to each side (the cords not used i n the above square
knot). Tie 1 row of alternating square knots, leaving out
the 2 end cords on each side. Complete this step with all
sinnets.

lo

tt

er

ns

Step No. 4: Double half-hitch all cords onto a 7" ring,
doing first a half knot twist sinnet, then 2 hanging cords,
then a half knot twist sinnet, etc. Be sure to completely
cover the ring.

Pa

Step No. 3: With 4 cords tie a 5 " sinnet of half knot
twists. Skip 2 cords, then tie 5" of half knot twists with 4
more cords. Skip 2 cords. Do this all the way around. You
will have 8 groups of half-knot twists.

Step No. 13: Add a 2% yard cord onto each of the 8 pairs
of cords left out in the above step, as shown i n the
Technique Section. With each new group of 4 cords, tie 4"
of half knot twists. These sinnets will be referred to in the
next step.

Pa

Step No. 5: Gather the cords not used in the half knot
sinnets together and wrap in the center above the ring
with a IV2 yard cord. This makes the half knot twists
stand out. Don't cut off the ends of the wrap.

Step No. 15: Using the 2 cords left out on each side in
step 14 (a total of 16 cords), you will alternate cords in this
manner:
Tie a square knot with the cords coming from the same
long sinnet. With the 4 cords left between each pair of

sinnets, tie a square knot leaving a 7" space to the last
square knot on each side. These knots form the "basket"
for the glass.

st

Step No. 16: The glass should now be tried in the basket.
The 7" gaps may need to be adjusted. On the cords that
have the 7" gap, larkshead 3 of the 2 yard cords on each
side of the square knot. Tie rows of alternating square
knots under the cords that were larksheaded on. Tie 5
rows of alternating square knots using a l l cords below
the glass.

Pa

Step No. 6: Below the ring use groups of 4 cords (each
group must have 2 of the 'left out' cords as filler cords and
one cord on each side) and make 20" of square knots. Skip
8 cords and do this with 4 more cords. Continue this
pattern all the way around. You will make 4 sinnets of
square knots.

Step No. 17: Half-hitch all cords onto the 19" ring.
Unravel the ends and brush out the tail, using a dog
brush and combing against a flat surface.

Step No.7: With a 2 yard cord, tie a wrap at the bottom of
the 4 square knot sinnets. Don't cut off the ends of the
wrap. Holding the wrap, push up to the wrap on the inside

of the 7" ring. T h i s will make the square knot sinnets bow
out. Tie the end of the bottom wrap to the end of the other
wrap. This should secure it in place. Beneath the wraps
cut off the cords at 17". Leave this tail to be combed out
later.
Step N o . 8: Below the 7" ring, divide the remaining cords
into S groups of 4. tie 'ZVi" of half knot twists with each
group. When working with the group on the left, begin
half knot twists on the left, and visa versa for right hand
side. Now put 2 groups together and tie 2 square knots
with each new group, using 6 filler cords and 2 tie cords.

If y o u don't h a v e enough c o r d left
for a w r a p , p i c k out 2 of the longer
c o r d s a n d tie a s q u a r e knot a r o u n d all
the rest.

Step No. 9: Divide each sinnet into 2 groups of 4 cords
each, and tie 22" of half knot twists. Remember to tie the
half knot twists on the same side as the sinnet.

longest cords as tie cords.
(C) Tie 24" of half knot twists on the sinnet in the
middle (the one with the longest tie cords). Slip a bead
up the 2 fillers and tie 15" more of half knot twists.

Step No. 6: With cords 1-4 tie 5 ' of half knot twists.
Slip a bead up the filler cords and tie 3" more of half
knot twists. Switch the cords using the 'X pattern
switch,' tie 3" more of half knot twists, slip a 2" bead up
the 2 filler cords, and tie 5" more of half knot twists.

Repeat this procedure with cords 45-48.

(D) For the 2 sinnets on each side with only 1 filler
cord, tie 8" of half knot twist, slip a bead up the 1 filler
cord, and tie 10" more of half knot twist. Repeat steps
A through D with other sinnets.
Step No. 6: To make b a s k e t - Y o u will alternate the 6
sinnets with the single filler. Alternate cords and tie a
row of Josephine knots 3" down. Alternate again and
tie a row of square knots 3" down. Alternate again and
tie a row of square knots IW down.

Step No. 7: Slip a VA" bead up cords 21 and 28. Skip
down IV2" and use 2 more 4' cords as knot bearers and
tie another row of double half-hitches. There will be a
12" tassel on each side; tie these tassels to the other
tassels using an overhand knot.

Step No. 7: Tie a wrap with the 2 yard cord including
the 3 longer sinnets by putting the bottom of the half
knot twists even with the last row of alternating
square knots. Do a 2" wrap. T r i m tail to 15".

Step No. 8: With cords 5-14 make 20" of alternating
square knots using the following technique:
Tie 1 square knot with cords 5-7 (only 1 filler cord).
Tie 1 square knot with cords 8-11 (2 filler cords). Tie 1
square knot with cords 12-14 (1 filler cord). To
alternate, tie 1 square knot with cords 6-9, and 1 with
cords 10-13. Continue this pattern for 20". Repeat this

procedure with cords 35-44.
Step No. 9: To make the Initial in the center, first
sketch a drawing of the initial, 8" wide and 19" high.
Tie alternating square knots, using IV2 square knots
each time, taking care to work from the top down. For
example, the high end of the swirl on the "S' had to be
done before the base of the 'S'. You may find it advan20

At the left is a d r a w i n g of several different sizes of
cord. The size of jute is written, for example, as 4%65.
w h i c h is 4 ply 65. T h e number " 4 " indicates the
number of m a i n plies. T h e second number "65" is the
fiber count. T h i s is the number of tiny fibers in each
ply. So to say you need a 4 ply is not enough. There is
4/28, 4/48, 4/65, 4/72, 4/120. These range from very
thin to very thick. I n substituting cords it isn't critical
to get the exact same cord. F o r example, a 4/65 is
almost identical to a 4/72. I n the 65 series, even a 5 ply
may be substituted for a 4 ply, g i v i n g only a slightly

bulkier look.
In t r y i n g to match thicknesses, here is a good rule.
Suppose the store only carries the 65 fiber count, while
the pattern may call for 7/28. Multiply the number of
plies by the fiber count, (such as 7 x"28= 196). T h u s ,
there are 196 fibers in the jute called for in the pattern.
The 3/65 jute would be close to the same thickness
because 3 X 65= 195. So by comparing the total number
of fibers in different cords, you can substitute easily.
J u t e is most economical i f purchased in a 10# ball,
but this is a lot of cord. Most stores w i l l also sell it by
the y a r d . T h e 10# balls are the n a t u r a l color of the
jute. I f you desire colored jute, you may purchase it in
the color, or you can dye it y o u r s e l f (at considerable
savings). I t is easiest and best to dye jute in small
quantities, tied into loose skeins.
You are only limited by your own imagination, so let
your imagination take over.
The mm chart is to help make cord substitutions
easier.
