The World Trade Organization (WTO), founded on January 1, 1995, aims to encourage
international trade to flow as freely as possible, making sure that trade agreements are respected
and that any disputes can be settled. In the five years since its founding, the WTO has become well
known as one of the world’s most powerful economic organizations, taking its place alongside the
World Bank and International Monetary Fund. The system of global rules for international trade,
however, dates back half a century to 1948 when the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade

(GATT) was formed after World War II. As time went by, it became clear that the GATT had two
major drawbacks - the limited areas of trade it covered, and the lack of an effective system to
settle disputes.
After seven years of trade talks ending in 1994, the so-called Uruguay Round finally gave
birth to the WTO, complete with an effective system to settle disputes and to form new rules
covering trade in services and intellectual property. Even after seven years of talks and with
22,500 pages of agreements reached, problems remained, especially in the difficult-to-deal-with

areas of agriculture and services.

B. The GATT was founded in Uruguay in 1995.
C. The WTO has an effective system to settle disputes and to form new rules.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct answer to each of the questions from 35 to 41.
It was once believed that being overweight was healthy, but nowadays few people
subscribe to this viewpoint. While many people are fighting the battle to reduce weight, studies
are being conducted concerning the appetite and how it is controlled by both emotional and
biochemical factors. Some of the conclusions of these studies may give insights into how to deal
with weight problems. For example, when several hundred people were asked about their eating
habits in times of stress, 44 percent said they reacted to stressful situations by eating. Further
investigations with both humans and animals indicated that it is not food which relieves tension
but rather the act of chewing.
A test in which subjects were blindfolded showed that obese people have a keener sense of
taste and crave more flavourful food than non-obese people. When deprived of the variety and
intensity of tastes, obese people are not satisfied and consequently eat more to fulfill this need.
Blood samples taken from people after they were shown a picture of food revealed that
overweight people reacted with an increase in blood insulin, a chemical associated with appetite.
This did not happen with average-weight people.
In another experiment, results showed that certain people have a specific, biologically
induced hunger for carbohydrates. Eating carbohydrates raises the level of serotonin, a
neurotransmitter in the brain. Enough serotonin produces a sense of satiation, and hunger for
carbohydrates subsides. Exercise has been recommended as an important part of a weight-loss
program. However, it has been found that mild exercise, such as using stairs instead of the

elevator, is better in the long run than taking on a strenuous program, such as jogging, which many
people find difficult to continue over periods of time and which also increases appetite.
Question 35: The word "crave'' in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to_________.
A. absorb

B. sewn
C. devour
D. desire
Question 36: The author mentions people's eating habits during times of stress so that_________.
A. thin people don't eat when under stress
B. overweight people are tense
C. a large percentage of people deal with stress by eating
D. 56 percent of the population isn't overweight
Question 37: What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To discuss the health problems caused by being overweight.
B. To help overweight people overcome their eating problem.
C. To present research into the factors causing obesity.
D. To recommend a weight-loss program for the obese.
Question 38: The word "this" in paragraph 2 refers to_________.
A. an increase in blood insulin
B. a revealing blood sample
C. a reaction to a chemical
D. an increase in appetite

A. declines
B. multiplies

B. Only certain people produce it in their brains.
C. It neurotransmits carbohydrates to the brain.

A. Thin people don't enjoy food.
B. deprivation of food makes people fat.

C. Overweight people have an abnormal sense of taste.
D. A variety of foods and strong flavours satisfies heavy people.
Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate
the correct word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 42 to 46.
Although the possibility is years away, people may one day be several helped to recover
from heart (42)________ by having specially engineered patches that have been seeded with cardiac
cells placed over the damaged (43)________ in their hearts. The idea is that these cell-impregnated
patches will encourage the regeneration of heart muscle. Laboratory studies using animals
suggest the advantages could be so great that it is worth the risk of the surgery needed to put such
patches in place; they might even provide an (44)________ to heart transplants. The problem is
finding a suitable way to make the patches stay put.
Stitching is one possibility, but sutures bring risks. They might block the blood supply to
the vulnerable area, or injure nearby healthy tissue, or cause haemorrhages. They might also
introduce harmful bacteria. Noris gluing-an obvious alternative to stitching-much better in
practice. Some glues stiffen with (45)________ Some are mildly toxic. Some are not porous enough
to permit cells to grow and move around. To ameliorate these problems one of the researchers
working (46)________ such patches, Tal Dvir of Tel Aviv University, in Israel, is developing a new type
