PRESENT SIMPLE TENSE

STRUCTURE
The present tense is the base form of the verb: I work in London.
But the third person (she/he/it) adds an -s: She works in London.
With the present tense, we use do and does to make questions. We
use does for the third person (she/he/it) and we use do for the
others.
With the present tense we use don’t and doesn’t to make negatives.
We use does not (doesn’t) for the third person (she/he/it) and we use
do not (don’t) for the others.

2. Something that happens again and again in the present:
I play football every weekend.
I sometimes go to the cinema.
She always plays tennis on Sunday.

3. Something that is always true:
The adult human body contains 206 bones.
Light travels at almost 300,000 kilometres per second.

4. Something that is fixed in the future.
The school term starts next week.
The train leaves at 19.45 this evening.
We fly to Paris next week.

NOTES
Look at these questions:
Do you play the piano?
Where do you live?
Does Jack play football?
Where does he come from?
Do Rita and Angela live in Manchester?
Where do they work?
But look at these questions with who:
Who lives in London?
Who plays football at the weekend?
Who works at Liverpool City Hospital?
We use adverbs of frequency (like: sometimes, often, always, rarely, never
… ) with the present tense

HOW TO ADD S/ES
Quy tắc thêm đuôi s/ es
- Động từ khơng có dấu hiệu đặc biệt: Thêm -s vào sau động
từ
Ví dụ: get - gets, take - takes
- Động từ kết thúc bằng các chữ cái –o,-s-ss, -ch, -x,-sh, z:

Ví dụ: miss - misses, wash - washes, watch - watches, mix mixes, do - does
- Động từ kết thúc bằng một phụ âm và -y: Bỏ -y và thêm -ies

HOW TO PRONOUNCE S/ES
- Phát âm là /s/ khi âm tận cùng của động từ nguyên thể
là /p/, /t/, /k/, /f/, /th/
Ví dụ: stops , spots , looks , laughs
- Phát âm là /ɪz/ khi âm tận cùng của động từ nguyên thể
là /s/, /z/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, /dʒ/,
Ví dụ: misses , rises , washes , watches , judges
- Phát âm là /z/ khi âm tận cùng của động từ ngun thể
là các âm cịn lại
Ví dụ: cleans , plays , clears , rides , comes
