answer to each of the questions..
A RARE SPORT
A person who enjoys exploring caves is called a spelunker. Spelunking, or speleology, is the study of caves.
The daring spelunker must face bottomless pits, scale steep rock walls, and crawl through spaces too small to stand

up in. He must cope with darkness, unchanging temperatures, and mud, mud, mud.
Like mountain climbing, spelunking is carried on in groups, with the einphasis on teamwork and safety.
A spelunker, if he is a scientist in search of accurate information, must have special skill and endurance as he
must get himself in and out of narrow crevices, carrying with him a good deal of scientific equipment.
There is much to learn from the exploring of caves. Fossils of prehistoric animals and plants are often found in
caves. Anthropologists studying the origins of man have found bones and wall drawings to increase their
knowledge of man's early history.
There are many kinds of caves, all of them interesting to the speleologist. Waves pounding on cliffs have
hollowed out sea caves. Hot lava flowing down the sides of volcanoes has left lava caves. The melting and freezing
of glaciers and icebergs has formed ice caves. The speleollogist has a wide, exciting, and dangerous field to study.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions.
Our eyes and ears might be called transformers because they sense the light and sound around us and turn them
into electrical impulses that the brain can interpret. These electrical impulses that have been transformed by the
eyes and ears reach the brain and are turned into messages that we can interpret. For the eye, the process begins as
the eye admits light waves, bends them at the corner and lens and then focuses them on the retina. At the back of

each eye, nerve fibers bundle together to form optic nerves, which join and then split into two optic tracts. Some of
the fibers cross so that part of the input from the right visual field goes into the left side of the brain, and vice versa.
The process in the ear is carried out through sensory cells that are carried in fluid-filled canals and that are
extremely to vibration. Sound that is transformed into electricity travels al nerve fibers in the auditory nerve. These
fibers form a synapse with neurons that carry the messages to the auditory cortex on each side the brain.
Question 45: According to the author, we might call our eyes and ears "transformers"because......
A. The brain can interpret the input.
B. They sense light and sound.

what happens?
A. The retina receives light waves.
B. The nerve fibers bundle together.
C. The optic nerves split.
D. Input from the left field goes to the right side.
Question 48: According to the passage, optic nerves eventually......
A. Split
B. Bend
C. Admit light waves
D. Become messages

D. Accomplished
Question 50: Which part of the passage best describes the first step in transforming light into electrical

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions..
The speleollogist has a wide, exciting, and dangerous field to study.

into electrical impulses that the brain can interpret.

The melting and freezing

answer to each of the questions.
