Part 4 p22
19 have
We use the present simple form when stating a fact
that is true. The correct form of the verb for plural
nouns is have.
We can only say dolphins are having babies if that is
happening now, i.e. as we speak.
20 their
We need to say their mothers because we’re talking
about more than one baby.
We could use its if there was only one baby in the text,
e.g. The baby stays with its mother. We could only use our
if we were talking about our own mother, e.g. Ben and I
stayed with our mother all day.

21many
We use many with countable nouns to mean a large
number of something.
We usually use any in negative sentences or in questions,
e.g. There aren’t any dolphins in the sea that can learn
to do that. / Can any dolphin learn to do that? A lot can
mean ‘many’, but it needs of after it, e.g. A lot of dolphins
can learn to do that.
22follow
Modal verbs like can or will are always followed by the
infinitive form of a verb.
The verb will cannot be followed by an -ing form
(following) or an -ed form (followed).
23them
The pronoun them means the dolphins in this sentence.
We can only use it to talk about one dolphin, e.g. That
dolphin is friendly, you can often see it. We can only use
him to talk about one male dolphin. The noun dolphin is
not masculine or feminine in English.

24but
We use but to join two parts of a sentence that
contrast in some way.
We cannot say because they don’t need to drink – that’s

not the reason why they eat certain kinds of food. We
cannot say or they don’t need to drink because or is used
to describe another possibility.

comments on it.
Model answer
Hi Donna,
Shall we meet at the bus stop at half past three? The judo
class starts at four o’clock. We need to take a towel and a
water bottle.
See you there.
Clare
(34 words)
Comments
All three points in the question are answered – Clare tells
Donna where to meet (at the bus stop), what time the class
starts (at four o’clock) and what they need to take (a towel
and a water bottle).
The text is coherent and basic linking words and cohesive
devices are used. Everyday vocabulary is used appropriately

and there are no grammatical or spelling mistakes.

Part 7 p31
Below is a sample answer for Question 32 and some
comments on it.
Model answer
One morning Jake was late for school!
Jake ran to catch the bus, but it wasn’t there. Jake cycled
quickly to school and he arrived after the bus. He felt tired,
but he was happy because he wasn’t late.
(39 words)
Comments
All three pictures of the story are described and the reader
can easily understand the story. There is some use of
time phrases and linkers (one morning, but) to show the
connections between the pictures. The vocabulary is varied
and shows the ability to use a range of A2 Key words (was
late, ran to catch the bus, wasn’t there, cycled, arrived). The
grammar is accurate and shows the ability to use some past
tenses (past simple) and some irregular forms (ran, felt).

Part 4 p60
19 the
We need to use the with superlative adjectives: the
most important.
We cannot use a because this does not make a superlative
form and it could mean any important food, not the most
important. We cannot use one because this would need
to be followed by of the and it could mean any important
food, not the most important.
20 where
We need a word that explains something about a place
(Asia), so where is correct.
We cannot use when because that explains something
about time. We cannot use how because that explains
something about the way someone does something.
21were
The past continuous form (were growing) is correct
because we are talking about something that
happened over a period of time in the past.
We need the plural form (were) not the singular (was)

because people means more than one person. We need a
past form (were growing) not a present form (are) as the
article describes something 5,000 years ago.
22started
We need a verb to indicate that rice was grown for the
first time so started is correct.
We cannot use decided as we need to use to grow, not
growing after the verb decide. We cannot use wanted as
it does not mean that the action took place, only that they
wanted to do it. It also needs to be followed by to grow.
Americans were starting to grow would be correct, but this
is not the sentence form in the text.
23There
There are is an expression to describe something that
exists or is true.
These and They would refer to something which has
already been introduced, but in this sentence the
information about the rice comes after the word these
or they.
24But
We use but to join two parts of a sentence that
contrast in some way. But is used at the start of the
sentence to emphasize the contrast.
And is used to link two similar ideas, but here the
information that follows is different from the previous facts.
So is used to introduce a result or consequence of what is
written before.

Part 5 p61
25 in

We use the preposition in with a town, city or part of a
country to describe where a place is.
26 as
We use as when we compare two things that are the
same, i.e. the same as you.

27 any
We use any after negative verbs (hasn’t got) and before
the object (brothers or sisters) of a sentence.
28 in
We use in to complete the phrase interested in which
means showing curiosity about something.
29 ’ve / have
The adverb already usually means before now and is
often used with the present perfect tense (to have + past
participle). It’s put between the two parts of the verb:
have already started.
30 at
We use the preposition at to give an exact time or place:
See you next week at Daniel’s party!

Below is a sample answer for Question 31 and some
comments on it.
Model answer
Hi Jack,
I’d like to go to the new sports centre on Saturday. Come with
me! We could play tennis. The number 12 bus goes there so we
can catch that.
Matthew

(32 words)
Comments
All three points in the question are answered – the writer
says when he wants to go to the sports centre (on Saturday),
suggests what they can do there (play tennis) and tells
Jack how to travel there (on the number 12 bus). The text is
coherent and basic linking words and cohesive devices are
used (linking word so, demonstrative pronoun that). Everyday
vocabulary is used appropriately, e.g. catch the bus, and a
good range of grammar structures has been used: would like,
preposition of time on, imperative, could for suggestions.
There are no grammatical or spelling mistakes.

Part 7 p63
Below is a sample answer for Question 32 and some
comments on it.
Model answer
A Sunday picnic in the park
Last Sunday, it was sunny. First, Gianni put tennis rackets
and a ball in his rucksack while his parents packed bags with
picnic food and plates and glasses.
Then they went to the park together on foot and on their
bikes and scooter.
When they got to the park, Gianni’s family ate sandwiches,
took photos and played tennis.
(64 words)
Comments
This is a very good attempt at the task. All three pictures
of the story are described in a coherent sequence using
simple linkers such as First and Then, making the story easy

to comprehend. The use of tenses is varied and accurate
and shows mastery of some irregular past simple forms
(went, took) and the ability to use conjunctions (when). The
vocabulary is used accurately and shows mastery of some A2
Key words (picnic, rackets, packed, together, sandwiches).

We cannot refer to ice cream as they. They is a plural
form. We cannot refer to ice cream as she. She refers to a
woman or girl.
20 that
This is a question that we can’t answer. We use that
when we’re talking about a thing or, sometimes, a
person.
We cannot use who to talk about a thing. Who is only used
for a person or people. We use when to talk about the
time or moment that something happens.
21making
We use the verb make when we create or construct
something, e.g. make ice cream, make a cake.
We use the verb do when talking about work or general
activities, e.g. do homework, do something. The verb like is
not an action that we can see people doing.
22 but
We use but to join two parts of a sentence that
contrast in some way.

We use so to introduce clauses of result or decision, e.g.
It was a difficult test, so I’m tired. We use or to join two
possibilities, e.g. Is ice cream or coffee popular in France?
23keep
We use the bare infinitive form after to when we use
infinitive of purpose to say why someone did something,
i.e. People used large pieces of ice from lakes to keep ice
cream cold.
24any
Americans eat more ice cream than any other
nationality means that there is no other nationality
that eats so much ice cream.

two or more people or things and can’t be used in this
context.

Comments
All three points in the question are answered – David tells
Penny where the beach party is (on Silver Beach next to the
car park), how he will travel to the party (take the bus to get
there) and what she needs to bring (some snacks).
The text is coherent and basic linking words and cohesive
devices are used. Everyday vocabulary is used appropriately
(It’s easy to find, something to drink) and a good range of
grammar structures has been used (present simple for
scheduled events, prepositions of place, imperative). There are
no grammatical or spelling mistakes.

Last week, Sarah and Tony played football at school. Tony fell
over when Sarah got the ball. Then, the students had lunch.
They ate rice and the teachers gave them water and some
fruit for dessert. At the end of the day, they said goodbye

(49 words)
Comments
All three pictures of the story are described and the reader
can easily understand the story. There is some use of time
phrases and linkers (Last week, Then and At the end of the
day) to show the connections between the pictures. The
vocabulary is varied and shows some ability to use A2 Key
words ( fall over, dessert, go home). The grammar is accurate

and shows the ability to use some irregular past simple forms
( fell, got, had, ate, gave, said, went). The answer is a bit
longer than the required length of at least 35 words (it has
49 words).

14 B Correct. Buddy and his brother, Rusty, … were both

born on 15 June 2013 …
A  We know that they have lived ... at London Nature
Centre since 2015, but the text doesn’t say where they
lived before that. We know that wild red pandas live in
India, China and other Asian countries.
C  The text doesn’t mention any more pandas. Buddy and
Rusty live in their own cage at London Nature Centre,
which means there are only two of them in the cage.
15 C Correct. There are over 50 bamboo plants growing at
the Nature Centre for the pandas.
A  The Nature Centre doesn’t have to buy special food
because there are over 50 bamboo plants growing at the
Nature Centre for the pandas [to eat].
B  The red pandas have to eat special food called ‘bamboo’,
so they don’t eat different types of food.
16 A Correct. Buddy got out of the Nature Centre. It took
four days for the workers of the Nature Centre to find
him!
B  Buddy stayed close to home so he wasn’t lost far away
from the Nature Centre.
C  We know that Buddy got out of the Nature Centre, i.e. it
was only Buddy, without Rusty.
17 C Correct. Trudy’s father, Mr Andrews, told her that
birds … [will] make a lot of noise to keep the panda
away. He told her to look for Buddy up in the trees. And
then Trudy found Buddy, just like her father explained.
A  Trudy heard some birds and looked up and saw Buddy
there, i.e. Mr Andrews didn’t find him.
B  It was Mr Andrews’s daughter who worked for the
Nature Centre, not Mr Andrews. One of the people who

worked at the Nature Centre and who went to look for
Buddy was Trudy Andrews.
18 C  Correct. Rusty happily shared some bamboo with his
brother, so they had a meal together.
A  Buddy didn’t give any food to Rusty. It was Rusty who
shared some bamboo with his brother.
B  Rusty was very happy. Everyone was very happy when
Buddy arrived back safely, especially Rusty!

from
The correct expression is to come from a country.
We cannot say someone comes of or for a country.
many
Many goes with plural nouns. The expression for many
years is another way of saying for a long time.
A lot must be followed by of, e.g. for a lot of years. Much is
used with uncountable nouns, e.g. We haven’t had much
rain this month.
21 him
We know that Shammi is a man because we read earlier
about his family. Therefore him is the correct pronoun.
We can only use it to talk about objects or animals. We
can only use them as a plural pronoun and not to describe

one person (Shammi).
22since
We use since with the present perfect and a point in
time (1997).
We use during to mean from the beginning to the end
of a period of time so during 1997 would mean from the
beginning to the end of 1997. The present perfect cannot
be used with during. We use in to mean at some point in
that period of time so in 1997 would mean at some point
in 1997. The present perfect cannot be used with in.
23all
The correct expression is all the colours.
Some cannot be followed by the. We would need to add
of to make the correct form: some of the … . Every is used
with singular nouns and cannot be followed by the.

24then
We use then to show the order of activities: First,
Shammi breaks the plants into small pieces and then
[he] washes them …
We cannot use after because it would have to be followed
by that to make sense. We cannot use first because it’s
used to denote the first step in a sequence, e.g. First,
Shammi breaks the plants into small pieces.

7 A Esteban
Whose account tells us about who lived in this place?
There has been a castle there since the 9th century,
although it is only since the 13th century that kings have
lived there.
8 B George
Who goes to their favourite place with someone else?
My favourite place in my town is the sports centre. I go
there every weekend to play tennis with my cousin.
9 C Michele
Whose city is well known for one building?

Most tourists want to take photos of the tower because the
city is famous for it …
10 A Esteban
Whose favourite place has a lot of tourists that visit it?
The best time to visit is first thing in the morning or in the
late evening, as the castle gets very busy with tour groups
during the day.
11 C Michele
Whose favourite place has a lot of beautiful things to look
at inside it?
It has paintings from the 15th century that are very
beautiful and sculptures, too.
12 B George
Who prefers the outdoor facilities at their favourite place?
In the summer when it’s hot I like to go swimming in the
outdoor pool, but my cousin prefers the indoor pool as it’s
bigger.
13 C Michele
Whose favourite place is quiet?
Not many tourists go to the museum so it is always
peaceful there.

19 than
We need than to complete the expression more than,
which shows that something is greater than a figure
given.
As is used in the comparative form as … as, which shows
that two things are equal in some way. We cannot use
as after more. Like can be used to compare things that
are similar. However, the sharks are not being compared

to anything in this sentence, so we cannot use like after
more in this context.
20 eat
We use the present simple for things which are
generally true. As great whites is plural, we need to use
the 3rd person plural form eat here.
Eats is the 3rd person singular form of the verb to eat.
The 3rd person plural form is needed after the plural great
whites. Ate is the past simple form of the verb to eat. It’s
incorrect here because the sentence describes something
that is generally true, so we need the present simple.
21 also
The purpose of the missing word is to provide more
information about what was said in the previous
sentence. We need to use also here, as it’s the
only word in the list that can introduce additional
information and be used in this position in the
sentence.
The adverb well cannot be used to provide further
information unless it’s being used as part of the
expression as well. We can use too to show that further
information is being provided, but it cannot be used at this
point in the sentence.
22world
The expression all over the world means in many
different places.
An island is a piece of land surrounded by water and so
cannot be used here as sharks live in the sea. Seas and
oceans are large bodies of water that exist between
countries, not part of a country.

25 well
The word well completes the expression as well, which is
used to add additional information to a sentence. In this
case, the sentence starts by describing the hotel. The
additional information is about the quality of the food at
the hotel.
26 went
Yesterday suggests that a past simple form is needed here.
The past simple form went goes before on to complete
the phrase went on a trip. We use go on when talking
about going on a trip or similar activity.
27 in
In or under are both correct here. We normally use in
when talking about swimming in a pool, but if we’re talking

about the sea then under is possible as well.
28 were
The past simple form of to be is needed here because the
sentence is talking about something that happened in the
past. The verb also needs to agree with the plural noun
people, so the correct past simple form is were.
29 are
We need the plural form of to be (are) to complete the
structure be going to.
30 ’ll / will
We use ’ll (will) to express a promise. In this case, the
writer is promising to phone her friend when she gets
back from her holiday.

23 believe
The verb believe means the same as think, i.e. people

think something is true, but it may or may not be true.
We cannot use tell without an object to say who the people
are telling this to. In this case, the verb say is possible. Afraid
is an adjective and needs a verb such as be or feel. We
could say Many people are afraid that/because.
24 because
The first half of this sentence provides a fact and
the second half of the sentence provides a reason or
explanation for that fact. We need because here to
introduce a reason or explanation.
We use but to contrast ideas, not to introduce a reason
for something. We use during to talk about a period of
time, not to introduce a reason for something.

Part 3 p130

Part 4 p132

19 both
Both is used to show that there are two people or
things which are the same in some way: in this case,
two parents who are artists.
Two is used for counting people or things and not to
show that two things are the same in some way. Pair is
part of the expression a pair of, which we normally use
to describe two things that are exactly the same, not two
people who are the same in some way.
20 who
We use who to explain something about a person: in this
case, we are giving information about Jessica’s sister.
When is incorrect because we use it to explain something
about a period of time. We cannot use what to explain
something about a person.
21 at
We use at to complete the phrase to be good at
something.
For and by cannot be used to complete the phrase.
22 them
We use them to mean the violin and the piano instead
of repeating those words.
They is used to describe the subject of the verb, and the
violin and the piano are the objects of the verb here. We
use their to explain who something belongs to. Here we
aren’t talking about belonging.
23 around
We use around to show that Jessica travelled to
different places in Europe.
Between is used to describe travel from one place to a

different place. But Europe is one place, so between is not
possible here. From describes where something starts, not
where someone travels to.
24 forget
When something is so good that we want to keep the
memory of it, we often say that we will never forget it,
i.e. we will always remember it.

Remember is the opposite of forget, so we wouldn’t say we
will never remember an event that was very important to us.
We use lose to say we are unable to find something. In this
case, we cannot say we will never lose it because ‘it’ is a
memory, not something physical.

Part 5 p133
25 for / in
For completes the expression for a long time, which we
use to describe a period of time which began in the past.
It’s often used with the present perfect tense. In American
English you can also say in a long time.
26 went
The past simple is needed because Tom is writing about
something that happened last weekend. You go to a party
so we need the past simple of go, which is went.
27 Do
Do completes the question Do you remember. The present
simple is the correct form because Tom is asking a general
question about the present time.
28 got
Got is part of the expression have got, which shows

possession.
29 me
Me is an object pronoun which refers to Tom here.
30 has
We use has with the verb in the present perfect.

Part 6  p134
Below is a model answer for Question 31 and some
comments on it.
Model answer
Hi Lucy,
My plane arrives at three o’clock on Monday. I’m staying in
London for seven days. I hope that’s OK! I’d love to go shopping
and see the London Eye!
See you soon!
Franỗoise
(35 words)
Comments
All three points in the question are answered: The writer says
what time she will arrive (My plane arrives at three o’clock on
Monday), how long she will stay (I’m staying in London for
seven days) and what she wants to do (go shopping and see
the London Eye).
The text is coherent and basic linking words and cohesive
devices are used. Everyday vocabulary is used appropriately
(go shopping) and a good range of grammar structures
has been used (present simple for a scheduled event,
present continuous for a future arrangement, would love to,
prepositions of time and place). There are no grammatical or
spelling mistakes.

Part 7 p135
Below is a model answer for Question 32 and some
comments on it.
Model answer
Last Thursday, Jack and his sister Ellen were playing the
guitar and piano when two men stopped to listen. The day
after, they played again and five people listened to them.
Some of the people danced. The day after, a lot of people
came to listen to Jack and Ellen and a TV journalist filmed
them.
(56 words)
Comments
All three pictures of the story are described and the reader
can easily understand the story. There is some use of time
phrases and linkers (Last Thursday, the day after) to show the
connections between the pictures. The vocabulary is varied
and shows the ability to use a range of A2 Key words (play
the guitar/piano, dance, TV journalist, film). The grammar is
accurate and shows the ability to use some past tenses (past
simple and past continuous).
