GRAMMAR: CLAUSE AND PHRASE OF CONCESSION
CLAUSE OF CONCESSION (Mệnh đề chỉ sự nhượng bộ)
Eg: We had a picnic. The weather was bad.
-> We had a picnic though the weather was bad.
Though the weather was bad, we had a picnic
Definition: Là mệnh đề chỉ sự tương phản giữa hai mệnh đề trong câu. Bắt đầu bằng :
although, though, even though, even if (mặc dù) + clause.

Even though
Even if

+ Clause (S + V …)
Although/ In spite of/ Despite chỉ mối quan hệ đối
lập giữa hai thông tin trong cùng một câu.

PHRASE OF CONCESSION: (Cụm từ chỉ sự nhượng bộ)
Eg: We had a picnic in spite of the bad weather.
IN SPITE OF/ DESPITE + phrase (noun phrase)
V_ing
Cách dùng: Chúng ta sử dụng although, though, even though, even if ,despite/ in
spite of để diễn tả sự đối lập của hai sự việc hiện tượng trong cùng một câu.

THE WAYS OF CHANGING A CLAUSE TO A PHRASE (Cách đổi mệnh
đề thành cụm từ)
Eg: 1. Although he was lazy, he passed the test.
Despite his laziness, he passed the
test
2. Though he studied hard, he didn’t passed the test.
In spite of studying hard, he didn’t passed the test.
HOWEVER, NEVERTHELESS - Tuy nhiên

I am good at English. However, I study Math so bad.
She used to live in Ha Noi. Nevertheless, she is living in New York now.
Sentence 1. However/ Nevertheless, Sentence
Cách dùng: However/ Nevertheless chỉ mối quan hệ đối lập giữa hai câu.
. Nevertheless trang trọng và nhấn mạnh hơn However.
Lưu ý: however và nevertheless thường đứng ở đầu câu khi tương phản hai ý kiến. Tuy
nhiên chúng cũng có thể nằm ở giữa hoặc cuối câu. Trước và sau nó phải có dấu phẩy.
