E1 Quad Fibre Loop Converter
Introduction
The Quad Fibre Loop Converter* (QFLC) system is a cost-effective optical multiplexer that
transports four E1s over two singlemode fibres. The QFLC system can be configured to maximize
facility utilization for point-to-point or point-to-multipoint topologies.
The QFLC system can also be used for fibre ring networks for both dual-feed and single-feed
applications to a customer. The QFLC system accepts standard electrical E1 signals and can be
used in a stand-alone configuration with any approved multiplexer or network element that
generates a standard E1 (6.703 Mbps) signal. The QFLC system consists of a rack mount central
exchange (CE) chassis with up to eight QFLC modules. Sixteen protected (or thirty-two
unprotected) E1s can be transported from a single eight-position CE chassis and can hub to four
remote terminals (RTs) in a protected configuration (eight RTs in an unprotected configuration).
Protected vs. Unprotected Circuits
The ADC QFLC multiplexes up to four E1 signals for simultaneous two-way (full duplex) transport
over two singlemode fibres for distances up to 33 km. Two fibres are used when deploying
unprotected service. Four fibres should be planned for use when deploying protected service;
two fibres are used for the working circuits and two fibres are dedicated to circuit protection.
The QFLC system configured for protected applications is a 1:1 protected system. Automatic
protection switching (APS) is established with a setting on the chassis’ backplane during
installation. This ensures against failures to either the optical facilities or the electronics. The
system also monitors degrading bit error rate (BER), and it will protection switch once the bit
error rate passes a user-selectable threshold.
In the unprotected configuration, one module is located at the CE and one module is located at
the RT. In the protected configuration, a second set of modules (one at the CE and one at the
RT) is connected to two additional singlemode fibres. If service fault conditions occur in the
working system (i.e., loss of signal, BER threshold violation, module failure), the protect system is
automatically switched, non-interrupted, into service and appropriate alarms are triggered to
identify the fault state.
Note that with the ADC QFLC system, redundancy is provided by duplicating the working system
with identical components. No external protection switches or other subsystems are needed.
One plug-in module performs all functions: master, remote and stand-by.

Quad Fibre Loop Converter
System Description
QFLC Transport Module
For E1 transport, the QFLC system requires only one type of module. This module is

interchangeable and is the same module for working and protect, CE/RT and customer premises.
In a protected system, two modules are required at each end (CE/RT and customer premises), one
pair for main and one pair for protect. In an unprotected system, one module is required at each
end (CE/RT and customer premises).
Technical specifications for the QFLC are summarized below.
Each E1 circuit provisioned via the QFLC can be individually provisioned for either AMI or HDB3.
The two line codes can be intermixed on the same module and are automatically duplicated on
the protect module in the event of a failure. The selection switches for AMI/HDB3 are located on
the module’s faceplate. This allows for in-service changes to the line code settings without
removing the module from the chassis and without affecting service on the other E1s.
Two levels of performance-based alarms (BER) are selectable on the QFLC, via switches on the
faceplate. Selectable BER switching range can be selected from 10 -4 to 10 -10 with minor alarm
notification selectable from 10 -6 to 10 -10 . These levels are user selectable and can be changed
in-service when needed.
MPU
The Micro Processor Unit (MPU) is a monitoring system interface between the QFLC modules and
a Telemetry Byte Oriented Serial (TBOS) interface administration location. The MPU is not required
at the customer premises site as all alarms are transported back to the CE. TBOS terminates the
alarms and extends them to the network alarm surveil-lance center. The MPU is mounted in the
eight position CE/RT chassis. An MPU module is not required in the system if not employing TBOS.
For alternative network management systems, contact ADC International Application Engineering.

Module Features
Alarm and Test Access
Diagnostics of remote far end alarms can be accessed locally at the CE
by pressing the Remote Alarm Display switch. The far end alarms will
display on the local CE QFLC front plate indicators. This feature can be
used to determine the cause of a remote alarm without dispatching a
troubleshooter, simplifying trouble diagnostics and allowing for single-
ended troubleshooting.
The module also has individual E1 remote loopback capability which
allows single-ended performance testing with end-to-end link visibility
from the CE.
Test access jacks for maintenance are built into the system at the
customer premises wall mount chassis.
AMI/HDB3 Option
Each E1 signal is optionable by the user.
Clear Channel Frame Format Option
The QFLC is transparent to frame formats.
E2A/TBOS Alarm Compatibility

The QFLC system provides major, minor and remote relay contact
closures for interface to E2A alarm systems. The QFLC system is
upgradeable to TBOS interface.
Remote Alarms
The QFLC provides two types of remote alarms.
The remote alarms report the module and alarm status of the far end
unit to the near end unit. By pressing the Remote Alarm Display switch
on the near end unit, the front panel instantly displays the LED status of
the far end unit.
The housekeeping alarm inputs tie in external alarms, such as open
door, air conditioning, or channel bank alarms. Like the remote alarms,
the housekeeping alarms are transported via an overhead channel.

Universal 4 Position Wall Mount Chassis
The customer premises wall mount chassis has four positions
chassis, and is ordered with either RJ or wire-wrap
terminations, AC or -48 Vdc power, and with a battery back-
up system.
The back-up battery system mounts on the wall below the four
position chassis and connects to the chassis via a -48 Vdc
power feed cable at the bottom of the cabinet.
This customer premises chassis is designed to be an integrated
unit. Included in the lockable wall mount chassis is Bantam jack
access to the E1 circuit, redundant AC power converters
(optional) and storage of excess fibre.
The customer premises wall mount chassis can be configured
for two protected systems (8 E1s) or two unprotected systems
(8 E1s).

E1 Quad Fibre Loop Converter
Description of Modules and Chassis
Typical Supply Current Requirements
On-Line QFLC: 250 mA at -48 Vdc
Off-Line QFLC Module: 125 mA at -48 Vdc

Protected QFLC System: 490 mA + 125 mA = 615 mA
Powering Considerations
The CE/RT eight position chassis requires -48 Vdc for operation. The four position customer
premises wall mount chassis can be powered via -48 Vdc or 110/220 VAC.
The customer premises chassis may be ordered equipped with redundant 220 V to -48 V power
supplies. These AC/DC power supplies use a 220 VAC commercial power supply which enables
them to be powered directly from a standard 220 VAC outlet or from a locally supplied -48 Vdc
power source at the customer’s location.
A 10 Amp hour battery back-up system is available to provide six to eight hours of battery back-
up to a fully loaded universal four position chassis. (110 volt mains)
NOTE: Off-line and on-line refer to QFLC system in a
protect configuration. On-line module refers to the
working modules in a protect system. Off-line modules
refer to the protect, back-up module.

Optional Equipment
Swing Out Bracket
The swing out bracket allows for the wall mount chassis to be mounted on a plate and swung out
for module installation if the side of chassis is located close to a perpendicular wall obstruction,
minimizing the “keep out” area needed on either side of the chassis
Mounting Bracket
The mounting bracket is used to rack mount the 4 position wall mount chassis or the battery
back-up system. It is used where the wall mount configuration is desirable, but only 23" wide rack
space is available.
2 Position Horizontal Bracket
The 2 position horizontal bracket is used to vertically wall mount 2 position chassis.
