Instructor Notes Module 8: Designing
Data Services
Introduction
This module provides students with an overview of issues to consider when
designing data services. The module also includes information about
Microsoft’s primary data access technologies.
After completing this module, students will be able to:
!
Determine the role of data services for a business solution.
!
Describe the issues involved in distributing data access technologies.
!
List the primary considerations for choosing a data access technology.
!
List and describe Microsoft’s primary data access technologies.
!
Determine the appropriate data access technology for a business solution.

2 Instructor Notes Module 8: Designing Data Services

Activities
Activity 8.1: Selecting Data Access Technologies for a
Solution
In the two exercises in this activity, students will identify the potential data
stores to be used within the Ferguson and Bardell, Inc. system, as well as
appropriate data access technologies.
After each exercise, lead a class discussion so that students can compare results.
After completing this activity, students will be able to:
!
List the primary considerations for choosing a data access technology.

!
Evaluate potential data access issues and choose the appropriate data access
method for a given scenario.

!
To prepare for the activity
1. Complete the activity.
2. Take some time to think through the various alternative answers students
might give. Be sure you know in your own mind why these answers are
more correct or less correct than the answers given on the Student CD-
ROM.

Module Strategy
Use the following strategy to present this module:
!
Overview of Data Services
This section reviews the concept of the data services layer and then
discusses the advantages and disadvantages of various possible locations for
the data services. Although this section is somewhat of a review of Module
2, take the time necessary to ensure that students understand the rationale
behind choosing where to locate the data services. Students need to grasp
the concepts well enough to be able to analyze and make correct choices
when confronted with a design problem.
!
Accessing Relational Data
This section discusses the various Microsoft technologies for accessing
relational data. Because of the similarity of the acronyms, and because of
the fact that some students might be unfamiliar with one or more of the
technologies, you might have to spend time differentiating among the
options. Again, be sure they grasp the underlying attributes of the

technologies so that they can make well-informed design choices.
!
Accessing Host-Based Systems
This section discusses the background and issues involved when accessing
SNA-based data. Some students might not see the value in this section. Help
them understand that these systems are still in use throughout the
information technology world, especially in large organizations, and that
students need to be familiar with the options available for accessing their
data.
