Activity 4.1: Choosing Techniques
Each information-gathering technique has its own advantages and
disadvantages. You need to choose the technique that would be most effective
for the project and the organization. In this activity, you will look at two
different scenarios and choose the information-gathering techniques for each.
In this activity, you will review the case study and determine which
information-gathering techniques are appropriate and what information you
intend to collect with each technique.
Objectives
After completing this activity, you will be able to:

Identify the information-gathering techniques that are most appropriate for a
given situation.

Before You Begin
This activity consists of small group tasks and class discussion.
Materials
To complete this activity, you will need the Ferguson and Bardell, Inc. case
study in Appendix 1.
Time to complete this activity: 15 minutes followed by a 10-minute class
discussion

Exercise 1: Choosing Techniques

Identify the most appropriate information-gathering technique
1. Work in small groups as assigned by the instructor.
2. Review the case study.


3. Identify a source from which you want to collect information.
4. Identify the information-gathering techniques that you will use for the
source.
5. In the space below, identify the questions that you want answered. The
questions indicate the information you are hoping to obtain from a particular
source by using a specific information-gathering technique.
Develop as many ideas as possible in the time allotted.

Next, choose a group member to present your results to the class.
