we finish our school education. Some want to have a nine-to-five job like a bank clerk, some want to be something
more creative like a designer, and my friend Dan even dreams of travelling into space.
For me, my plan for the future will take far more than three years to accomplish. After getting a university degree, I
will fulfill my long dream: joining the Peace Corps, which is a volunteer programme run by the United States of
America. This programme allows young people to work abroad for two years with schools, non-profit organisations,
and charities… in areas like education and agriculture.
One aim of the programme is to help us to understand the cultures of other countries, and to help people outside the
USA to understand us. The work can be difficult, but I believe it has its rewards. I can see myself travelling in a
faraway land, finding ways to fit into a community that is very different from my own, and working together with the
local people for a better future. I might even come to Viet Nam and visit you. Who knows?

All the best for now.
Yours,
Mark.

The price of holiday can fluctuate a great deal throughout the year, so you can save a lot if you are flexible with your
travel dates and avoid peak holiday times. It can be also cheaper if you book well in advance. Before your departure,
make sure you get as much information about your destination as you can. Find out if you require any special visas
or permits to travel there. Think about spending money as well. Will you be able to access your own money easily
enough or will you need to take cash with you? Think about eating larger lunches and smaller evening meals to help
your money go further, as lunch is generally cheaper. Make sure that you keep sufficient identification with you at all
times. It may also help to email a copy of your passport details to yourself, in case it is lost or stolen. Label your
suitcases clearly so that they can be easily identified as yours. It can be useful to store a copy of your itinerary in a
prominent place in your suitcase so that the airline will know where to find you if your luggage gets lost. Be sure to
pack any medication or other essential items in your hand luggage. If your flight is delayed, or your luggage is lost,
there can be difficult to obtain in an airport or foreign country.

ROOTED IN THE PAST
Good manners are a treasure to the people who possess them, as well as to the community they live in. Manners are

taught, learnt, and passed from generation to generation.
Even hundreds of years ago, children were taught to behave responsibly. They learnt to respect seniority. When they
passed an object to another person, they had to use both hands. When they entered a room, they had to bow and greet
the oldest person first. Boys learnt to work hard to support their families. Girls learnt to do housework, and to take
care of others. Loyalty and honesty were highly appreciated. When they made a mistake, they would not let another
person be punished for it. That would be cowardly and mean. They were taught that families were strong, and
everybody should stick together in adversity.
Fortunately, many of these values have been well preserved. They have contributed to making the unique Vietnamese
culture, and strengthening our society.

Dear Jenny,
It’s great to learn that you have been granted a scholarship to study at Queens’ College, a prestigious part of
Cambridge University, and that you will be able to pursue your dream of becoming a biologist. Congrats!

17

I have been accepted to the maths class at Ha Noi High School - one of the best schools in Ha Noi. I love maths and I
hope to become a mathematician one day. I know the route ahead is not smooth because I will have to take courses in
maths, physics, and even in computing. My dad said I need not only a bachelor's degree, but ideally a doctoral one if
I want to get a good job. I would love to work at the Institute of Mathematics like my dad, due to his work at the
institute, he has also been invited to teach in several universities in France. Alternatively, I can choose applied

mathematics and work in finance for an international company. Moreover, my mother said I also need soft skills like
teamwork skills, interpersonal skills, and communication skills to do either of those jobs. Luckily, my new school
provides many extracurricular classes which I can take part in to relax and to pick up those skills.
Anyway, there is plenty of time for me to make detailed plans. I’ve decided to take a break for a while.
Wish you were here to go with me to Da Nang.

The changing roles of the modern-day father
Fathers used to act as the ‘breadwinner’ of their family, and as the teacher of moral and religious values.
Today, however, those roles are gradually changing.
Changes in economic roles

20

More and more women are going out to work and earn money. This increases the budget of the family. Apart from
that, there are various social welfare programmes which financially assist mothers in supporting their children. Both
these changes have greatly impacted the role of fathers because they make paternal financial support less essential
for many families.
Changes in caregiving roles
With the burden of financial support reduced, and with a changing concept of a father's role, modern day fathers
tend to be more involved in children's caregiving. They are now spending more time and energy on their children.
Psychological research across families from all ethnic backgrounds suggests that the influence of a father's love and

attention is as great as that of a mother's. Fatherly love helps children develop a sense of their place in the world,
which helps their social and emotional development .Moreover, children who receive more love from their fathers
are less likely to have behavioural problems.
This trend is still increasing and its effects will become clearer and clearer in the future, especially in
traditionally male-dominated societies.

When they passed an object to another person, they had to use both hands. When they entered a room, they had to
