Every summer, three billion birds of 300 species migrate from northern Africa

some of the animals inevitably die during each trip. However, it is not this twice-a-year journey that
poses the greatest risk to these animals. The main threat to the birds’ survival comes from human
hunters.
All over the Mediterranean millions of migrating birds are killed for food profit, and sport every
year. As a result, bird populations are dropping all over the region. In nations along the Mediterranean,
many migratory birds are illegally trapped or shot. In addition to traps, hunters also use electronic calls

to catch birds. This tool, which a hunter can operate from a cell phone, mimics bird sounds and is so
effective in attracting the animals that in some countries, bird populations have plummeted. Some
hunters also use nets to capture birds as they fly close to the sea. The nets are high-going from ground
level to just over 3 meters – and invisible to the birds, allowing hunters to trap hundred birds at a time.
Countries all over the Mediterranean are aware that bird populations are susceptible, and many are
working to address this problem by making migratory hunting illegal in some countries or strictly
controlling it in others. More nature-protection groups are also making sure that laws are obeyed. The
organization WWF Italy, for example, works with volunteers to stop poachers and destroy birdsong
devices that attract birds.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the answer to each of the
question from 36 to 42.
It is estimated that by 2050 more than two-thirds of the world's population will live in cities, up
from about 54 percent today. While the many benefits of organized and efficient cities are well
understood, we need to recognize that this rapid, often unplanned urbanization brings risks of
profound social instability, risks to critical infrastructure, potential water crises and the potential for
devastating spread of disease. These risks can only be further exacerbated as this unprecedented
transition from rural to urban areas continues.
How effectively these risks can be addressed will increasingly be determined by how well cities are
governed. The increased concentration of people, physical assets, infrastructure and economic
activities mean that the risks materializing at the city level will have far greater potential to disrupt
society than ever before.
Urbanization is by no means bad by itself. It brings important benefits for economic, cultural and
societal development. Well managed cities are both efficient and effective, enabling economies of
scale and network effects while reducing the impact on the climate of transportation. As such, an
urban model can make economic activity more environmentally-friendly. Further, the proximity and

But these utopian concepts are threatened by some of the factors driving rapid
example, one of the main factors is rural-urban migration, driven by the prospect of greater

employment opportunities and the hope of a better life in cities. But rapidly increasing population
density can create severe problems, especially if planning efforts are not sufficient to cope with the
influx of new inhabitants. The result may, in extreme cases, be widespread poverty. Estimates suggest
that 40% of the world's urban expansion is taking place in slums, exacerbating socio-economic
disparities and creating unsanitary conditions that facilitate the spread of disease.
The Global Risks 2015 Report looks at four areas that face particularly daunting challenges in the
face of rapid and unplanned urbanization: infrastructure, health, climate change, and social instability.
In each of these areas we find new risks that can best be managed or, in some cases, transferred
through the mechanism of insurance.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the questions from 31 to 35.

Body language is a vital form of communication. In fact, it is believed that the various forms of
body language contribute about 70 percent to our comprehension. It is important to note, however, that
body language varies in different cultures. Take for example, eye movement. In the USA a child is
expected to look directly at a parent or teacher who is scolding him/her. In other cultures the opposite
is true. Looking directly at a teacher or parent in such a situation is considered a sign of disrespect.
Another form of body language that is used differently, depending on the culture, is distance. In
North America people don't generally stand as close to each other as in South America. Two North
Americans who don't know each other well will keep a distance of four feet between them, whereas
South Americans in the same situation will stand two to three feet apart. North Americans will stand
closer than two feet apart only if they are having a confidential conversation or if there is intimacy
between them.
Gestures are often used to communicate. We point a finger, raise an eyebrow, wave an arm – or
move any other part of the body – to show what we want to say. However, this does not mean that
people all over the world use the same gestures to express the same meanings. Very often we find that
the same gestures can communicate different meanings, depending on the country. An example of a
gesture that could be misinterpreted is sticking out the tongue. In many cultures it is a sign of making
a mistake, but in some places it communicates ridicule.
The dangers of misunderstanding one another are great. Obviously, it is not enough to learn the
language of another culture. You must also learn its non-verbal signals if you want to communicate
successfully.
(Adapted from “Reading Academic English” by Judy Rapoport, Ronit Broder and Sarah Feingold)

A. the country
B. an example
C. sticking out the tongue

another culture, it is advisable for a person _______.
A. to use the body language of the people from that culture

How do children learn about wildlife? And is what they learn the sort of thing they should be
learning? It is my belief that children should not just be acquiring knowledge of animals but also
developing attitudes and feelings towards them based on exposure to the real lives of animals in their
natural habitats. But is this happening?
Some research in this area indicates that it is not. Learning about animals in school is often
completely disconnected from the real lives of real animals, with the result that children often end up
with little or no understanding or lasting knowledge of them. They learn factual information about
animals, aimed at enabling them to identify them and have various abstract ideas about them, but that
is the extent of their learning. Children’s storybooks tend to personify animals as characters rather than
teach about them.
For direct contact with wild and international animals, the only opportunity most children have is
visiting a zoo. The educational benefit of this for children is often given as the main reason for doing it
but research has shown that zoo visits seldom add to children’s knowledge of animals - the animals are
simply like exhibits in a museum that the children look at without engaging with them as living
creatures. Children who belong to wildlife or environmental organizations or who watch wildlife TV
programmes, however, show significantly higher knowledge than any other group of children studied
in research. The studies show that if children learn about animals in their natural habitats, particularly
through wildlife-based activities, they know more about them than they do as a result of visiting zoos
or learning about them in the classroom.
Research has also been done into the attitudes of children towards animals. It shows that in
general terms, children form strong attachments to individual animals, usually their pets, but do not
have strong feelings for animals in general. This attitude is the norm regardless of the amount or kind
of learning about animals they have at school. However, those children who watch television wildlife
programs show an interest in and affection for wildlife in its natural environment, and their regard for
animals in general is higher.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, c, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 35.
Culture is the lens with which we evaluate everything around us; we evaluate what is proper or
improper, normal or abnormal, through our culture. If we are immersed in a culture that is unlike our
own, we may experience culture shock and become disoriented when we come into contact with a
fundamentally different culture. People naturally use their own culture as the standard to judge other
cultures; however, having our own judgement could lead us to discriminate other cultural values which

are different from our own because we do not understand them.
Cultural diversity is important because our country, workplaces, and schools increasingly consist
of various cultural, racial, and ethnic groups. We can learn from one another, but first we must have a
level of understanding about each other in order to facilitate collaboration and cooperation. Learning
about other cultures helps us understand different perspectives within the world in which we live and
helps dispel negative stereotypes and personal biases about different groups.
In addition, cultural diversity helps us recognize and respect “ways of being” that are not
necessarily our own, so that as we interact with others, we can build bridges to trust, respect, and
understanding across cultures. Furthermore, this diversity makes our country a more interesting place to
live, as people from diverse cultures contribute language skills, new ways of thinking, new knowledge,
and different experiences.
(Adapted from />Question 31: What is the passage mainly about?
A. The function of culture.
B. The ways people use their own culture.

D. The things we learn from culture.

A. remove

correct answer to each of the questions from 36 to 42.
We are a planet of seven billion people, and this number is growing by about 370,000 people every
day. This is putting a huge strain on the planet's natural resources. For many governments and
environmental organizations, the race is on to drastically reduce our consumption of resources before
they run out.
Water is one of our most precious resources. Our quality of life, as well as life itself, depends on
the availability of clean, fresh water. It is the most widely used resource in industry, and plays a major
role in energy production. Although 70 percent of the world is covered in water, only 2.5 percent of
that is fresh water, and less than one percent of that freshwater is readily available to us. Yet we often
overestimate how much water we have, and reduce it further through pollution or inefficient use.
Some 92 percent of all fresh water used annually is dedicated to growing plants and raising
animals for food. This means that if water runs out, our food supply might follow. In India, it is
estimated that future water shortages could reduce grain harvests by 25%. In a country where the
population exceeds 1.2 billion people and is growing rapidly every year, this is a huge concern. India,
like
15 Imany developing countries, is already struggling to provide for its population. While most people
in developed countries can get water at the turn of a tap, nearly four billion www.sachmoi24h.co
people elsewhere lack
access to safe water, according to United Nations Development Report.

Rain forests are another endangered resource. While rain forests are critically important to
humanity, they are rapidly being destroyed by human activities. The biggest cause of deforestation is
conversion of forest land for agriculture. Often called the "Lungs of the Planet”, rain forests once
covered 14 percent of the Earth's land surface, but this has shrunk to only six percent. Every second, an
area of rain forest, the size of a football field, is destroyed at this rate. Rain forests will possibly
disappear completely in less than 40 years.

Market research analysts help companies figure out what to sell, who will buy their
products and services, and how to promote them. They design surveys that are used to
help discover potential customers' preferences. These marketing professionals then train
and supervise interviewers who conduct these surveys online, by telephone, or through
interviews with individuals or focus groups.

In addition to taking surveys, market research analysts are responsible for keeping track
of client industry trends and general marketing trends, as well as forecasting these
markets to provide companies with proposals and information of the products, services,
promotions and all relevant data to help management in their marketing decisions.
There are now new tools that analysts can use, such as geofencing, which uses GPS
or similar technology to build a virtual fence around a business and ofer targeted
advertisements to a customer’s phone as he or she walks through a store. Eye-tracking,
which monitors how your eye travels around a website, is another technology market
research analysts use.
The process of collecting and analysing data is logical and quantifiable; figuring out
why target audiences might be attracted to a particular product is not. This is why some
of the most successful market analysts seem to understand human emotions and

From picking the right partner to coping with breakups, the "Gender and Culture" course at
Seoul's Sejong University teaches students the various aspects of dating, love and sex. The class is
particularly popular for its dating assignment, in which students are paired with random partners to
go Ion four-hour- long dates. Such classes may be necessary, as a growing number of South Koreans
20
are shunning romantic relationships amid economic hardships and societal problems.

The country's overall unemployment rate last year rose to its highest level
m in 17 years, and
while they struggle to find jobs, many young South Koreans say they lack the time, money or
emotional capacity to go on dates. Additionally, due to the highly-competitive nature of the job

market, many young people spend their free time in schools to earn extra certificates or professional
skills.
Dating can also be expensive. Matchmaking company Duo estimated the average cost per date

is 63,495 won (around $55). People in minimum-wage jobs earning 8,350 won ($7.22) an hour
would have to work 7.6 hours to pay for a single date Bae Jeong-weon, the instructor of the “Gender
and Culture” course at Sejong, said this is the perception she hopes to change through her course,
specifically through dating assignments’, in which students are restricted to spending less than
10,000 won ($9) per date.
However, money isn't the only issue facing students on Bae's course. There were 32,000 cases
of sexual violence reported to police in 2017, compared to 18,000 in 2008, according to data from
the National Police Agency. And among these, partner violence has soared sharply. Even for those
women with non-violent partners, there is another potential problem: Illicit filming. Recently, a
major scandal involving several high-profile K-Pop stars has shown just how widespread this
behavior is. Singer Jung Joon-young was arrested in March over allegations that he filmed women
during sex without their consent and shared the videos online.
To help address this alarming situation, Bae's course includes information about sex, and most
importantly, the psychology of sex and the gender politics around it. “The goal (of the class) is to
understand differences among people, especially between men and women, and how to form good
relationships and become good people by considering and respecting others", she said. “I think
understanding each other is crucial as we work together to create a better and happier world."

everyone should share the housework equally, but in many homes, parents do most of it. To certain

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions:
Who talk more men or women? Most people believe that women talk more. However, linguist
Deborah Tannen, who has studied the communication style of men and women, says that this is a
stereotype. According to Tannen, women are more verbal - talk more in private situations, where they
use conversation as the “glue” to hold relationships together. But, she says, men talk more in public
situations, where they use conversation to exchange information and gain status. Tannen points out that
we can see these differences even in children. Little girls often play with one "best friend", their play
includes a lot of conversation. Little boys often play games in groups; their play usually involves more
doing than talking. In school, girls are often better at verbal skills, boys are often better at
mathematics.
A recent study at Emory University helps to shed light on the roots of this difference. Researchers
studied conversations between children aged 3-6 and their parents. They found evidence that parents

talk very differently to their sons than they do to their daughters. The startling conclusion was that
parents use more language with their girls. Specifically, when parents talk with their daughters, they
use more descriptive language and more details. There is also far more talk about emotions, especially
with daughters than with sons.
