Postgraduate study at QUT
Why choose QUT?
Here are some good reasons students
choose to undertake postgraduate study
at QUT:
Reputation
QUT is one of Australia’s leading
universities with 8400 postgraduate
students, including more than 2000
research students, among its total
enrolment of 41 000. QUT is a major
contributor to the creation of new
knowledge in its areas of research
strength. Our researchers address
complex problems and issues with
rigour and imagination.
Industry input
Course content is created in collaboration
with top industry professionals to
ensure courses are relevant to changing
industry needs. Opportunities for you
to gain professional experience through
workplace projects in industry in Australia
and overseas are built into our courses.
Flexibility
Many QUT courses allow for flexibility
when it comes to choosing when, where
and how you study. Depending on the
course you choose, you may be able to
attend classes in the evening, access
study materials online or undertake
flexible assessment options. Mid-year
entry may enable you to fast-track your
postgraduate study.
For more reasons to choose QUT for
postgraduate study visit www.qut.edu.au/
study/postgraduate-study
Course choices
You can complete your postgraduate
study through coursework or research.
Choosing the best option to suit you
primarily depends on your reasons
for study.
If you are interested in using study as a
way to change or advance your existing
career, then coursework study is ideal for
you. Postgraduate coursework programs
lead to graduate certificates, graduate
diplomas and masters qualifications.
Graduate certificates may be completed
in as little as one semester, graduate
diplomas in two semesters and masters
courses typically take between two and
six semesters (depending on the mode of
study selected, i.e. full-time or part-time).
Coursework programs are often ‘nested’
in design whereby, following successful
completion of a course, progression to
the next level of studies is automatic in the
next available teaching period.
QUT’s research programs meet the needs
of students, industry and the community
through supervised research training
that is collaborative, multidisciplinary and
purpose driven. Choose from a graduate
diploma, masters by research, professional
doctorate or Doctor of Philosophy.
Gardens Point campus
Gardens Point campus is a prime location
in Brisbane’s city centre, beside the
Brisbane River, City Botanic Gardens
and Parliament House—a position that
reinforces QUT’s links with business,
industry and government.
Gardens Point campus, with more
than 23 000 students, is within easy
walking distance of shops, restaurants,
theatres, galleries, and public transport
including buses, trains and its own
ferry stop. The Goodwill Bridge, a
pedestrian and cyclist bridge, links the
campus to South Bank Parklands and
the Queensland Cultural Centre.
QUT’s centre for the arts, the Gardens
Cultural Precinct, offers a full theatre
and exhibition program. QUT Creative
Industries productions in acting,
dance and music are presented at the
Gardens Theatre, in addition to work
by a wide range of visiting Australian
and international companies. QUT Art
Museum and the William Robinson Gallery
in historic Old Government House offer a
program of changing exhibitions.
An exciting new $230 million Science and
Engineering Centre, due for completion
in late-2012, will bring together teaching
and research in science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics disciplines.
It will include stimulating learning and
research spaces, food and retail outlets,
and a 50-metre swimming pool and gym.
Gardens Point and Kelvin Grove
campuses are linked by a free shuttle bus.

options visit www.qut.edu.au/transport

Go global
Business graduates operate in a global market place and, as an internationally oriented
business school, we provide you with exposure to international environments and perspectives.
Whether it is through relevant curriculum and cases onshore, or the ability to undertake
exchanges, short-term programs or even compete in international competitions offshore, you
will find many opportunities to ensure you are ready for a global career.
Studying abroad can open up new and
rewarding opportunities. New friends,
new languages, new cultures and new
experiences mean that you will have a
great time and enhance your graduate
studies. More importantly, employers
are always looking for graduates who
can distinguish themselves from other
job candidates.
Studying overseas helps you develop the
international and intercultural perspectives
that they will be looking for. Living and
travelling overseas can be an exciting way
to gain professionally relevant skills in an
appropriate setting.
Student exchanges
Student exchanges enable you to spend
a semester or two studying with one of
our partner institutions. These studies will
count towards your QUT degree.
The QUT Business School partners
with some of the best institutions in the
world, many of which are ranked number
1 in their home country. If you want to
enhance your studies by spending time at
some of the best business schools in the
world, undertake an exchange as part of
your program.
For more information visit www.qut.edu.
au/business/courses-and-study/study-
overseas-and-exchange
Short-term programs
We understand that many of our students
have busy personal and professional
lives and are unable to undertake an
international exchange. To cater for your
needs, we support students to undertake
short-term programs (two to six weeks) at
a range of overseas partner institutions.
In 2011 more than 80 students travelled
to countries such as Croatia, France,
Germany, Norway, Denmark, Colombia
and Korea for short-term programs.
Study tours
Some programs, such as the MBA and
EMBA, offer students the opportunity to
undertake organised study tour programs.
Consult your degree program for more
information.
International business
competitions
We actively encourage and support
students to work together and use their
entrepreneurial skills and abilities to
compete with universities around the world
at international business competitions.
These initiatives are designed to enhance
the quality of entrepreneurship and
management education, to increase the
rate of success for new ventures, and to
extend national and international networks
for young entrepreneurs and educators.
Our student teams have successfully
represented the QUT Business School at
a range of competitions over the past few
years, competing in Thailand, India, the
United States, and Canada.
For example, the Mai Bangkok Business
Challenge at Sasin is Thailand’s premier
business plan competition. It was created
in 2002 to encourage postgraduate
students in business administration
programs across Thailand and Asia to
become more entrepreneurial.
Financial support
QUT recognises that travelling overseas
can be costly. Every year, QUT and
the QUT Business School support
students to participate in exchanges or
other international opportunities with
scholarships. Additional financial support
may be available to students who attend
a QUT Business School preferred partner
university. So just think, you can travel,
enhance your degree, develop your career
prospects and have QUT support you to
do so.
7
International double
masters
Would you like to attain two masters
degrees from triple-accredited institutions
in about the same time it would normally
take you to get just one? The QUT
Business School offers two international
double masters programs.
In an exchange study, you complete part
of your degree at one of two leading
institutions in Europe. Through cross-
crediting of your course content, you are
able to obtain the full degrees from both
institutions—and you may be able to
complete the double degree in the same
time that it would take you to complete
your QUT Master of Business program.
You continue to pay QUT fees during
your exchange program; there are no
additional study fees incurred.
Entry to these programs is limited and
competitive. For more information please
contact the QUT Business School Student
Centre or email
For more information about the QUT
Master of Business program, please refer
to page 18.

‘I was working at Boeing Australia when I started the MBA. I was at that point in my career where I was a team
leader as well as very much in the technical side. I was at a crossroad, deciding whether to stay technical or move

lawyers, accountants, chief financial officers, and people from many backgrounds. It’s amazing what doors open
for you as a result of meeting people from different walks of life.’

Sonia Salomone
MBA graduate
PricewaterhouseCoopers manager
‘I have always wanted to work in a role where
I was able to have a big-picture, strategic
perspective of organisations. It was important
to me to be able to deliver value to an
organisation by addressing complex business
problems that have a material impact on the
organisation’s value. QUT opened many doors
for me. Being involved in a research project
exposed me to a unique perspective and
heightened my understanding of performing
research with rigour. The flexibility that QUT
provided to allow me to obtain my MBA
qualification with a research major has helped
me to reach my career goals. The networking
opportunities provided by QUT ultimately
led to my current position as manager with
PricewaterhouseCoopers.’

CEO, Spicers Group
‘Prior to commencing the MBA at QUT I put a lot of emphasis on developing myself as a leader. But what I learned
through the program and by reflecting during my studies were the gains that could be made by developing the
people around me and not just myself.
My career has advanced dramatically since completing the MBA and part of that is because of the confidence
I have within myself, the understanding and clarity of what I want to do and how I can create value for the
businesses I work in.’

Coursework programs – MBA
QUT’s Executive MBA (EMBA) is designed to take experienced managers to new
levels as highly skilled leaders.
The concept of ‘knowing one’s self’ lies at the forefront of the program, facilitating
the development of a deep understanding of personal goals and leadership traits.
In addition to self-realisation, strategy, decision making and leadership, the unique
model for our EMBA program integrates fundamental units with more advanced
elements that include organisational transformation, entrepreneurship, governance and
corporate accountability. The program culminates in an international study tour to China,
honing your abilities to meet the demands of a quickly changing globalised society.
During the tour, you will learn the intricacies of negotiating and conducting business in a
foreign country and applying commercial expertise in a vastly different culture.
Additionally, the program offers leadership coaches who will help individual students
establish clear goals for both their chosen career paths and personal lives.
Through the EMBA’s emphasis on corporate governance and leadership, you will
undertake a leadership practicum by shadowing a senior executive from industry,
commerce or government and experience first-hand how leadership issues are
handled at executive level in the real world.
Course design
The EMBA program commences in late January or early February each year. Classes
are scheduled once every four weeks over a Friday to Sunday session with 18–21
hours of classes per weekend session, plus one intensive session (international study
tour). The intensive block sessions allow students to schedule dedicated time to
study around demanding business commitments.
Students undertake 24 six-credit-point units which incorporate the core units of
the MBA program with eight units designed specifically to focus on self-realisation,
leadership and decision making, organisational transformation and corporate
accountability.

Coursework programs – Master of Business
Master of Business overview
Postgraduate study by
coursework
You can complete your postgraduate
study through coursework or research.
Choosing the best option to suit you
primarily depends on your reasons
for study.
If you are interested in using study as
a way to change your qualifications,
advance your career or start a new career,
then coursework study is ideal for you.
Flexibility
Some of our courses can be broken down
into smaller pieces so you can opt in and
out when it suits you. For example, if you
are having trouble finding time to continue
in your masters program, you may be able
to exit early with a graduate certificate or
graduate diploma.
Study options
Graduate certificate
You will study four units either full-time
or part-time to complete a graduate
certificate, which can take as little as one
semester to complete.
Graduate diploma
A graduate diploma typically builds on
a graduate certificate. You will study
eight units either full-time or part-time.
A graduate diploma can normally be
completed in two to four semesters.
Masters by coursework
A masters degree is a further continuation
of a graduate diploma and can be
completed in two to eight semesters. It
gives scope to study a selection of units in
your field.
Master of Business programs
Our Master of Business program gives
you the opportunity to gain specialist
knowledge in a business discipline
of your choice. You can build on your
knowledge and critical understanding
from previous studies, helping you to
advance your business career. Or you can
change careers into a range of business
professions, even if you have not studied
business before. Some majors also
satisfy the requirements for professional
recognition.
The Master of Business—Advanced
gives you the opportunity to extend your
studies, including options of a research
dissertation, further coursework studies
in your chosen major, or the choice of
a minor in another business discipline.
Under certain circumstances the
Advanced program can also provide a
pathway to doctoral-level studies.
Program structure
The Master of Business programs are
available in 10 different disciplinary fields.
You can choose from the following
discipline areas:
Accounting – refer page 19
Professional Accounting – refer page 20
Applied Finance – refer page 21

Public Relations – refer page 24

International Business – refer page 26
Human Resource Management –

Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies –
refer page 28.
Each discipline area within the Master of
Business consists of 144 credit points
of study, which comprise both core and
elective units. For those who are new to
the discipline, there are 48 credit points of
introductory units through which you will
develop an appropriate level of foundation
knowledge. Alternatively, if you have
an appropriate undergraduate degree
you may be entitled to receive credit for
prior learning (advanced standing) for
the introductory units. The remaining
component of the program enables
the development of deeper discipline
knowledge through core and elective units
(96 credit points).
A further 48 credit points of study is
available in the Master of Business—
Advanced program. This allows you to
extend your studies to suit your career
interests. The additional 48 credit
points may include research studies,
advanced coursework studies in your
chosen discipline, or the choice of a
minor in another business discipline. We
encourage you to consult your subject
area coordinator as early as possible in
your studies to determine the best way to
meet your career and learning needs.
Credit for prior learning
(advanced standing)
Students may be granted credit
(advanced standing) for up to 48 credit
points for prior academic studies
where the completed degree major
directly relates to the discipline area
you are studying. Credit will relate only
to the general business component or
introductory studies in the discipline
area and is generally not available for
advanced units. Credit may be granted
only if the relevant undergraduate degree
was completed within five years of
commencement of the masters.
Entry requirements
For all majors except Accounting, entry
requirements are an undergraduate
degree with an overall minimum grade
point average of 4 (on a 7-point scale).
Students entering the Master of Business
(Accounting) major must have an
appropriate degree in accountancy.
Special entry

easy to attend night classes after work. My lecturers were very knowledgeable and their
industry experience meant they could prepare us for rewarding careers.’

You will be introduced to managerial finance and economics, and move on to
