interdisciplinaryapproach.Thenetworkmembersarekeentoattractpostgraduatestudentsfrom
aroundtheworld.
Ourteachingandresearchhasgeneratedanimpressiverecordofresearcharticlesinleadingacademic
andprofessionaljournals,books,reportsandtheses.

nationalArchives(withlargeamountsofmaterialrelatingtoBritishimperialhistory,aswellasNew
ZealandandMaorihistory),andtheParliamentaryLibrary(whichincludesofficialdocumentsfrom
overseasgovernments).Wealsohavecloselinkstoanumberofgovernmentinstitutions,suchasthe
ReserveBank,Treasuryandotheragencies.
PHDINECONOMIC,ACCOUNTINGORBUSINESSHISTORY
TheaimofaPhDcourseofstudyistodevelopastudent’sresearchskillsandprovideanenhanced
understandingofhistoricaltrends,withaviewtocareerenhancement.APhDcanbeundertakeneither
asafulltimecourseofstudy(overthreeorfouryears)orparttime(overfive tosixyears0.ThePhD
involvesindependentresearchwhichisundertakenundertheguidanceofoneormoresupervisors.
NewZealandPhDsfollowtheBritishmodelofbeingawardedonthethesisalong;thethesiswillbe
100,000wordsandmustmakeasignificantandoriginalcontributiontothediscipline.

StudentscanworktowardsaMaster’sprogrammeinEconomic,AccountingorBusinessHistoryinone
ortwoways:
1.BYCOURSEWORKANDTHESIS(OptionavailableinEconomics)
Thisoptionissuitableforstudentswhohavecompletedanundergraduatedegreeineconomics.Most
overseasstudentswilltakethisroutetoamaster’sdegree.Studentswillonlybeadmittedonceayear
inFebruary/March,andwillnormallyfinishinJunethefollowingyear.
2.BYTHESISONLY
Thisoptionisonlysuitable forstudentswhohavealreadycompletedanAustralianorNewZealand‐style
“honours”year(400‐Level).Studentsmaybeadmittedatanytimeoftheyear.
