CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

1.1 General introduction
Nowadays, English is a popular language in the world, so it is
important for children to learn English from an early age. Actually, in Viet
Nam more and more people learn and use English to mine wide the
knowledge and get into the world. It seems that English is gradually
becoming a means to help children be more confident when communicating
with foreigners.
As we see, language directly affects children and helps children
develop more comprehensively. An experienced teacher said, “Children are
able to absorb language in a natural way and especially when children are in
kindergarten age. Unlike adults, children can receive language without being
aware that they are learning that language”. Because of the ability to hear
and imitate the pronunciation quickly and accurately, that makes children
learn the language much easier.
The children get a chance to learn a foreign language from an early
age, they will tend to approach other languages more naturally and quickly.
Accordingly, children’s learning foreign language in childhood will help create
knowledge base to study more and more foreign languages for children.
Because of that cause, there are a lot of kindergartens where are
using English as the second language in teaching or adding English lessons
into activities on the class for children. According to scientists, they point out
the good method to motivate and reach the mind to "learn" foreign

languages with children is through active games, storytelling, songs, rolePage 1 of 11

playing or craft art. In these activities, learning English via songs is an
attractive method with children, because they like the melody and the
children try to sing along to the music, which contributes to train the child's
listening and speaking skills.
In this research, if only the topic “How to apply English songs effectively in
teaching English for kindergarten?” were clarified.
1.2 The aim of study
Through the report, I wish people knew “How important English
teaching for children is!” at early stage to maximize their ability and take
advantage of the open-minded of children. By recommending the effective
methods to apply songs in teaching English for children, I hope I have
contributed some ideas to make interesting lessons in kindergarten.
1.3 Significance of the study
At the age of 3 years and over, children can distinguish Vietnamese and
English so they can start teaching children to learn English at this age.
However, the parents must choose the correct learning method in
accordance with the physiological mind, the ability to acquire, the growth
stage of the child.
The young psychology of this period prefers games and outdoor
activities so the parents cannot force them to study seriously with books and
pens. So it is very important to choose the correct method which is suitable
with the psychophysiological factors, characteristics of receiving information
of preschool children, in order to keep them interested in English and
naturally approaching English.

1.4 Research question
The researcher wishes to raise the questions as follows:
What are the advantages of using English songs in teaching English for
kindergarten?
How to apply English songs effectively in teaching English for kindergarten?

CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Definitions of songs
According to Oxford dictionary, song is “a short poem or other set of
words set to music or meant to be sung”.
Another definition from Cambridge dictionary, song is “A usually short
piece of music with words that are sung, the act of singing, or singing when
considered generally or the musical sound that a bird makes”
According to Study.com, its most basic, a song is “a short piece of
music, usually with words. It combines melody and vocals, although some
composers have written instrumental pieces, or musical works without
words, that mimic the quality of a singing voice”.
Generally, by the simple explanation, song is a combination of musical
note and lyric which transfer to listener by singing.
2.2 The advantage of using songs in teaching English
It’s true to say that we will be not recognized its strong-points until we
start to research it. There are many advantages from using English song in
Page 3 of 11

teaching, especially in developing listening and vocabulary. Some key
advantages include:
2.2.1 Making children interested in lesson

Teaching English to children through dense pages of text or just text
only that make them feel boring. As a result, the consequence may not be as
hoped by parents. But teaching children to learn English through songs is
completely different.
We all know that children love listening to children's music because of
the cuteness and closeness, so if we let children get used to the English
songs, they will definitely absorb it.
Even if the learners can’t know anything yet, because they are too
young to understand, they are not interested in this issue at all! What they
pay attention to be the melody of the song when they are listening to it.
Especially songs for children are never boring.
2.2.2 Practicing pronunciation correctly
Instead of just sitting on a desk, reading and listening to the words in
English many time to practice pronouncing correctly, this is now much easier
and more interesting. Trying to sit on the sofa or take a walk around the
park, sitting on the bus but your child can still practice pronunciation only by
turning on an English song and paying close attention to how the singer takes
up the lyrics.
Especially, if the children like learning to sing songs that are not difficult to
sing, it is possible to memorize the whole song.
2.2.3 Enhancing communication

Most of the songs which are used to teach English for learners have
popular words in life. Therefore, music helps them to become familiar with
grammar and English communication and when they grow up they form a
good reflexive ability when communicating with foreigners. They will be also
not surprised to listen to the words hardly ever having a chance on books.

2.2.4 Improving vocabulary
Teaching children to learn English through songs also increases English
vocabulary quite well. Sometimes there are very close words but children do
not understand the meaning, when the children listen to the songs, they
would like to know what these words mean, so their vocabulary increases
significantly. So we can teach children the songs about family, friends,
animals, etc.
2.2.5 Developing listening skills
In order communicate well, children must first hear what others say. If
the they would like to be good at listening skill, the words is not sufficient,
they should be familiar with listening to foreigners speaking regularly.
Listening to songs will help children improve their listening skills, for
example: important words, how to connect words, swallow words of
foreigners.
2.2.6 Helping your child entertain
Finally, it is undeniable that the important benefit of learning English
through songs is relaxation. After children always want funs, they like to play
games, make noisy, be naughty, etc., everything is for their entertainment.
Consequently, this is a good technique to encourage the children to interest
and study at the same time.

CHAPTER 4: DISCUSSION AND FINDINGS

4.1 Discussion on the results
The results from interview, reading and also attending professional
activities and real activities in teaching/learning English by songs of children
and kindergarten teachers shown that children love to join in the learning
English song activities, the melody of children's songs is always an extremely
attractive factor for children. Therefore, teaching children to learn English
through songs helps them absorb extremely fast.
4.2 Recommendations on “How to apply English songs effectively in
teaching English for kindergarten?”
Recommendation 1: Choose songs that have simple lyrics and provide lots of
repetition.
Learning English through Music is an extremely effective method
which can help children improve their Speaking and Listening skills quickly
and easily. However, it is not easy to choose songs for children to learn

English because these songs have to have suitable and simple lyrics. Today,
teachers have many choices with English songs that respond the above
requirements.
For examples, songs are used to teach children letters, such as: ABC
song, Phonics Song 1, Phonics Song 2. Songs are used to teach children
greeting, such as: Hello, Hello How Are You, Greeting Song. Songs are used to
teach children number, such as: Our Favorite Numbers, The Number Song,
Counting 1-10 Song.

Recommendation 2: Using English songs to create a musical environment
close to children.
As we know, children are very adaptable to their surroundings, so
using English songs to teach English daily is a very effective method for
children to learn English naturally and productively. The teachers can put
music into children's playing and learning activities. Listening to these simple
songs will gradually give children the habit of communication. A concrete
example demonstrates it: a student hears a song ‘‘Hello, how are you ?’’
many times , when the foreign teacher asks him "how are you?", besides the
traditional answer “ I am fine”, this student knows other answers like “ I am
good”, “ I am great”, “I am wonderful”. By using this method the children are
excited, happy to dance and sing along to the song. This way also helps them
get memory about the lyric very well.
Recommendation 3: Review words and structures which students have
learned by using English songs
Normally, it’s difficult for children to remember many new words after
a lesson. Therefore, many teachers usually try to use games to remind them
and make them remember longer. And English songs are also a “game” like

that. They are a powerful tool for teaching and learning of teachers and
students. The teachers are able to review the words and structures of
previous lessons. When the teachers review the word about the counting
number, or animal name or family members, they can use the reflected
songs like Numbers Song, Counting, Hippo Jungle Song, What Do You See?,
Finger Family; when the teachers review the simple structures, they can use
some songs like What Is It? What Color Is It? in order to create a happy and
comfortable atmosphere. But why the children can be attracted by these
Page 11 of 11

songs? Because these songs shows the animals, numbers, cartoon
characteristics, which very closed to children’s memory. Of course, they will
focus on these songs more than some boring lesson with full of texts and
words.
Recommendation 4: Warm up before new lesson, teach new words through
songs.
Before starting the new lesson, the teachers can use English to warm
up students. That creates an exciting atmosphere and makes students be
interested in period. After that, through the song, teachers suggest learners
to find the animals, numbers, characteristics’ description in order to discover
new words and memorize. By this way, make them easier to absorb and
remember lessons.
Besides that, when the children listen to the English song many times,
it will help children gradually understand how to pronounce more correctly.
Even, the teacher can encourage them to try to sing in front of class or at
home. Especially, the English songs help children practice phonics in an
extremely comfortable and interesting way and therefore it will help they
progress faster. Furthermore, besides the new words, in the lyrics there are
other vocabulary that helps the students will increase their vocabulary

knowledge.
CHAPTER 5: CONCLUSION
Nowadays, there are more and more English Centers developed to support
knowledge and practice communication for children. Frankly, teaching
method is very important to children so most of English Center has applied
many interesting and creative-thinking teaching methods to attract leaners.
And the main purpose in presenting this report is to state a case for
Page 12 of 11

developing English teaching method by songs. English song will be able to
use as a tool for both teaching and studying. Besides that, using English
songs in teaching can help children improve not only listening skill but also
other skills such as speaking and reading skills. That is so useful when
teachers can use songs to teach new words and structures for children.
Another useful point is creating effective connection between teacher and
learners, learners and learners. As a final point, adjusting children’s English
songs is a technique that teachers can apply to increase repertoires, so giving
them many chances to apply English in class.
