PART 2
Listen to the audio and complete the extract below.
Extract 1
My father and my uncle are (36)…………….. , and as a child I used to spend all my time on the
beach. Every morning I watch them come in with nets full of fish.
I had the idea that I wanted to work on a boat. But the (37)…………….. was: it was a very male
(38)……………… only men did it. They thought we should stay home and clean the house, do the
cooking, have (39)………………
I eventualy became a cleaner in a hotel. One day I had the (40)……………..to work as a cleaner on
a ship.

Extract 2
The problem with some of the (41)…………….. way of saving the environment is that they can be
really boring. Today we are looking at ideas for (42)…………….. the environment that are a bit
diferent.
Our first (43)…………….. is called Hug it Forward. It started in Guatemala where
(44)…………….. decided to work together to build schools out of old plastic bottles. In the first
project, over 1.800 kids from the (45)…………….. filled 10.000 plastic bottles with bits of plastic,
food wrappers and other rubbish found on the streets.

Extract 3
They used the botlles as (46)…………….. to help build a school. By the time they had finished, they
had a new school and the (47)…………….. was a lot cleaner. The idea is (48)…………….. and
around the world more communities are using the bottle school (49)…………….. to build their own
school. What a (50)…………….. idea!

Extract 4
Here’s an idea for those of you who enjoy going out (51)…………….. . The Surya nightclub in
London was one of the first (52)…………….. nightclubs in the UK. The club has a special dance
floor which uses the (53)…………….. people make when they dance to (54)…………….. energy.
48

The dancers manage to 60% of the energy that the club uses for light and music. The owener of the
eco-club had another great idea. If you walk or cycle the club, rather than using car or public
(55)…………….. , you get free entry.

Extract 5
Our final idea for today is the (56)…………….. of the Seoul River Park. It’s getting more and more
difficult to find green (57)…………….. in cities, so when Dr. Kee Hwang had a ‘crazy’ idea to take
down the city’s main (58)…………….. and uncover the river that flowed below, to make green
park, most people thought he was mad. They told that his idea would create (59)…………….. chaos
and would be a (60)…………….. for the area.

Extract 6
Dr. Hwang went ahead with the project, and (61)…………….. the 5.8 kilometre green river park.
It’s a place where the (62)…………….. of Seoul can walk, (63)…………….. and really enjoy the
city. People are happier and there’s a lot less traffic (64)…………….. than before. It just shows that
sometimes even the (65)…………….. ideas can work.

Extract 7
One thing that really (66)…………….. me is the fact that we import so much food from
(67)…………….., rather than growing our own food here in this country. You go to the supermarket
and you can buy strawberries in the middle of winter, and I (68)…………….. that’s OK.
I mean I don’t understand we need to (69)……………..apples all over the world when we could just
(70)…………….. them here in this country?

Extract 8
It really makes me (71)…………….. . It would be so much better for the (72)…………….. if people
bought food locally. I’d like to start a (73) ……………..to encourage people to buy and eat
(74)……………… food. Perhaps I could start a website or (75)…………….. articles in newspapers
to try to get people to stop buying food that comes from all over the world.
