Some experience in teaching unit 3- language focus 2 in the direction of communicative
language teaching for grade 11 students at Thach Thanh 3 high school.

A. INTRODUCTION
I. THE REASONS FOR CHOOSING TOPIC.
Learning English has become more and more important recently. Therefore,
how to make the method of teaching and learning advanced is a vital demand to
English teachers.
In the integration society, the purpose of teaching English is to communicate so
learners need to have all skills with no exception of Grammar. However, for
most students, learning Grammar is somewhat boring and tiring. Thus, how to
teach grammar effectively for students, espeacially, students at Thach Thanh 3
high school is a great concern of mine.
To be well aware of the problems of teaching grammar in traditional ways, I
innovate teaching unit 3- language focus 2 in the direction of communicative
orientation and follow 5 steps in teaching: warm up- lead in- new lesson
introduction- practice- application
From the above described reason, I have applied some techniques namely:

communicative language teaching for grade 11 students at Thach Thanh 3
high school.
By carrying out this research, I wish to give a hand in improving not only
grammar but also develop communicative skill for English learners in general
and students at Thach Thanh 3 high school in particular.
Perhaps my research is certainly not perfect so I am looking forward to
receiving feedback from all of you.
II. RESEARCH PURPOSES.
I spend time finding an effective ways in teaching unit 3- language focus 2 with
a view to arousing my students' passion in learning grammar and finnaly use the
grammar point in communication.In this lesson, students know about passive
infinitives and passive gerunds then use them in daily life


Based on the innovation of the Ministry of Education & Training about
manipulating interdisciplinary knowledge in teaching, I would like to give some
of my new ways of teaching unit 3- language focus 2, English 11 effectively.
III. RESEARCH SUBJECTS.
In this research, I pay attention to the 11th grade students who are going to
studying unit3 with grammar point - passive infinitives and passive gerunds so
that they can deal with exercises related to. Besides, I give my students
opportunities to discover the interest of the lesson by giving the lecture in the
direction of Communicative Language Teaching so that students can develop
their speaking skill in grammar teaching period. As I have mentioned above, the

lesson is so attracting that my students are all excited and they find that learning
grammar is extremely fascinating.
IV. RESEARCH METHODS.
To make my solutions effectively, I have used some following methods.
Firstly, I always get advices from colleagues through co-working.
Secondly, I usually study, create and use new methods in teaching English such
as using,video, images, pictures, sounds, etc.Pictures of some situations that are
very familiar with students such as: covid vaccination, food provision, students'
daily activities.
Thirdly, I use projecters, presents video clips to make the lesson actively. For
example, I show a short video performed by students at Thach Thanh 3 high
school about fascinating topic about students' emotion in which I introduce

examples related to grammar point passive infinitives and passive gerunds.
Next, I design the lesson with games , which attract students' attention a lot.As
students can use this grammar point to develop their speaking skill during and
after the lesson. As a result, they find themselves under no pressure and can
remember the knowledge well.
Last but not least they can use this grammar point in their daily life
communication,which leads to their interest of studying English.
B. CONTENT
I. THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
At the conference in 2009 about " Grammar and Communicative Language
Teaching" worldwide, Professor Ane Burns of Macquarie university introduced
the definition of Grammar and assured that grammar is a part of communicative
teaching. Teachers cannot concentrate only on the structures but also on
situation and context.
In Vietnam, The Ministry of Education co-operate with Bristish Coucil organize
the traning courses about: Teaching in the direction of Communicative
Language Teaching"
Thach Thanh 3 high school is situated in a moutainous area where students have
little opportunities to communicate in English. They are taught grammar to do
exercises. As a result, they may forget the knowedge quickly. I have thought of
the way to improve communication in English via language focus lesson for a
long time and have found that Communicative Teaching Grammar makes the
lesson more attracting and memorable.
II. REALITIES BEFORE APPLYING THE RESEARCH
Language focus of unit 3 is so boring because it merely contains two simple
grammar points. In the past, I used to teach students for the following steps.

1. Presentation
Teacher gives some examples and introduce the structures: passive gerunds and
passive infinitives
2. Practice
Teacher asks students to do exercises 2,3 text book page 40,41
3. Homework:
Teacher asks students to learn the structures by heart and do exercises 2,3 text
book again.
With the mentioned methods of teaching grammar above, my students are so
tired of the lesson. They quickly forget the lesson and more seriously, they do
not know how to use the passive infinitives and gerunds in their daily life. In
other word, as a teacher, I find my lecture inefficient.
III. SOLUTIONS
As the research pays attention to give some new ways of teaching Language
focus 2- unit 3 English 11, I would like to present it in the form of a lesson
plan which contains both the content and the interdisciplinary knowledge inside
Here is the content.
1.Warm up( 5 minutes)
The aim of this activity is to warm up the class and to check the knowledge
students have learnt in the first period- Unit 3-language focus part 1-To
infinitive and gerund. With these aims, I organize a game-the lucky wheel:
There are 4 questions to check the grammar points in the previous lesson which
have connection with the one in period 17.
Students volunteer to choose the question and they will have a chance to spin the
wheel to get score if they give the correct answer. The student getting the

highest points will get my present.
The wheel with colourful decoration and lively sound arouse students and help
them have a great time before the lesson.
-Teacher: Do you want to play a

-Students: Yes.

number- answer the questions- spin
the wheel

2.Lead-in ( 3 minutes)
To attract students attention as well as to introduce new grammar point and also
familiarise students with the direction of communication, I show a video
performed by students at school in which I launch expamples about passive
infinitives and gerunds deliberately.

Sts: Watch a video and repeat the sentences they see and hear.

3.New structure introduction(12 minutes)
While students repeat sentences they have remembered in the video, I list them
on the screen.

Then I give some more pictures and ask students to put the verbs into correct
forms to complete the sentences.

I encourage students to give some more examples about passive infinitives

infinitives with To

4.Practice( 15 minutes)
After introducing new grammar points to students, I provide them handouts with
two activities

To make the lesson more interesting and communicative, I design the activity 2
in the form of games: Lucky number.
I explain the duty, give and example and ask students to do activity 2 in 2
minutes.
Students are called to choose the number and answer the question. If she or he
get the lucky number, they will get mark 10.

For each question in each activity, I ask students to give the answer and give
explanation so that they can understand and remember the lesson well.
Moreover, I encourage them to read aloud the whole sentences to enhance their
speaking skill.
5. Production (7 minutes): Talk about the situation
I ask students to work in pairs to make a dialogue in which they have to use
knowledge they have learnt- passive infinitives and passive gerunds
I show picture 1 and work with the monitor as an example:

Beside the topic suggested above, I encourage my students to talk freely about
whatever they like with a view to stimulating them to speak up.
IV. EFFECTIVENESS OF THE RESEARCH
I have done a survey about how much my students like the new way of teaching
grammar in the direction of Communicative Language Teaching after the lesson
and the result is amazing. Most of my students find the lesson attractive and
memorable." I can understand the lesson well because I can speak up" said the
monitor of class 11 B3.

I feel myself walking on the moon when the majority of my students are excited
about the lesson and the new way of teaching grammar as the whole.
C. conclusion
I. GENERAL CONCLUSION
In a nutshell, Grammar lessons seem tedious and tiring if teacher do not make
innovation. Students may understand the lesson right after but quicky forget.
Language focus 2 of unit 3-passive infinitives and gerunds fascinates students
when it is taught in the new way- Communicative Language teaching.As a
teacher at a school where most students come from mountainous area with little
English communicative environment, I have tried my best to design every lesson
in the communicative orientation.
The Ministry of Education and Training has made a decision to change text
book since 2022. However, the new way of teaching- Communicative Language
Teaching are still hold good.
II. RECOMMENDATION
1. For my office and colleagues.
I would like to offer my office to invest more refererence books, hold English

clubs so that students have chances to practise and exchange knowledge more
often. I also take this hope that my colleagues will always cooperate and help
me in the process of teaching English at school.
2. For Department of Education and Training.
Being a young teacher, I know my research could be limited. I would like to
receive good comments from colleagues and sponsors so that my given solution
become more perfect and effective.
