preferred choice of more and more small businesses and home users.
While VeriLex received a boost from the sale of its factory in Johor Bahru, Malaysia, the
company's net earnings showed a year-on-year decrease of 9 percent. At a press conference
yesterday, Chief Executive William Lam was cautiously optimistic about the company's
prospects for the forthcoming year. He used the opportunity to announce a number of measures
that the company plans to implement. These include a workforce restructuring plan,

Questions 172-175 refer to the following article.
Global Parking Rates
on the Rise
The cost of parking increased almost everywhere in the world over the past 12 months. Only
the United States did not follow the trend. That's the conclusion of a report published this
week in Business Car User magazine, which listed two "Top Tens" of the most expensive
cities for parking, depending on whether you pay for parking your car on a daily or monthly
basis.
No single global region dominates the "Top Ten" lists of most expensive places to park your
car. Cities in North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region appear on both lists. Latin
America is the only region not represented, although parking rates in all major South
American cities increased by between 10 and 20 percent.
For the fourth year in succession London comes out on top for monthly parking rates by a
margin of more than 20 percent. Zurich replaces Hong Kong in second position, because of
last year's dramatic rise in the value of the Swiss franc. Zurich monthly parking costs were
$765 (705 Swiss francs)-no change in local currency, but an increase of over 30 percent in
US dollars. Two Australian cities-Sydney and Melbourne-made the top ten.
Things look slightly different on the list of daily parking rates. European cities dominate in this
category, with London, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Geneva, Zurich, andVienna all being beaten
for the top spot by Oslo. The only non-European cities on the list are Sydney, Tokyo, and
Toronto.
15

172. What is the purpose of this article?

(A) To encourage more drivers to use public transportation
(B) To campaign for lower parking rates
(C) To compare parking charges around the world
(D) To highlight differences between daily and monthly parking charges
173. Which city has the highest daily parking rates?
(A) Hong Kong
(B) London
(C) New York
(D) Oslo
174. According to the report, where did parking rates NOT increase?
(A) Asia-Pacific
(B) Australia
(C) Europe
(D) The United States
175. What can be inferred about monthly parking rates in Zurich?
(A) They are similar to rates in Sydney.
(B) They are cheaper than Hong Kong rates.
(C) They are subsidized by the Swiss government.
(D) They are the same as a year ago.

part thanks to your organization. This is why I, too, would like to join. I would be a reliable
member- Thursday is a good day for me-and would be willing to serve on one of your
committees, or help out in any other way.
Please send me an application form, or tell me how I should go about applying for membership.
Thank you.

Upcoming talk

Dear Ms. Zhang,
First of all, please accept my apologies for not having been in touch for so long. I was
waiting until all the arrangements for the conference, The Psychology of Investment, were
finalized before contacting you. I am now pleased to tell you that your session, Protecting
Your Voice, is scheduled to run at 10:30, and it will be the first session of the morning. I
know you have another commitment later that day, so I hope that this timing suits you.
Could you please let me know what AV equipment you require? There are projectors and
screens in every room, but anything else must be ordered in advance.
We have not yet finalized room allocations, and I was wondering if you would mind using
our smallest seminar room, which holds a maximum of 12. I'm assuming due to the nature
of your talk that you would prefer a small group, but larger rooms are available, so please
let me know the maximum number of participants you are prepared to accept in your
session.
Your fee of $250 will be paid into your bank account within seven days of the end of the
conference. I trust you are happy with this arrangement.

May I say again how delighted I am that you accepted our invitation to speak. The
importance of a person's voice in selling is often overlooked, and I'm sure all delegates will
find your session most useful when they are advising clients on which financial products to
invest in.
I look forward to your reply.

Sincerely,
Todd Allsop

Upcoming talk

Dear Mr. Allsop,
Thank you for your e-mail, and thank you again for my early slot. It means that I will have no
problem getting back to the clinic by four o'clock in time to see my patients. Thank you also for
your promise of speedy payment.
I do not require any equipment, or even a projector or screen. I will be taking the group through
some practical voice exercises.
I am very excited about taking part in your conference. It's the first time I've worked with
executives from the financial services industry. The sector is a bit of a mystery to me, I'm afraid,
which is probably why we therapists often have financial worries.
Warm regards,
Wendy Zhang

Questions 191 – 195 refer to the following book review and accompanying card..

My dearest niece,
This is one of my favourite books and I have a hunch you will love it as
well. It will undoubtedly quench your literary thirst for adventure and love …

and, to make it even more perfect, it takes place on a Greek island, a place
I know you’ve always fantasized about. I’ve read this so many times, so I’m
sorry the cover is a bit worn and there are probably a few torn pages, but I
think it shows character!

Extravagant, inventive, emotionally sweeping, Corelli’s Mandolin is the story of a
timeless place that one day wakes up to find itself in the jaws of history.
The place is the Greek island of Kephallonia, where the gods dabble in the affairs of
men and the local saint periodically rises from his sarcophagus to cure the mad.
Then, the tide of World War II rolls onto the island’s shores in the form of the
conquering Italian army
Caught in the occupation are Pelagia, a wilful beautiful young woman, and the two
suitors vying for her love; Mandra, a gentle fisherman turned ruthless guerrilla, and
the charming, mandolin-playing Captain Corelli, a reluctant officer of the Italian
garrison on the island. Rich with loyalties and betrayal, and set against a landscape
where the factual blends seamlessly with the fantastic. Corelli’s mandolin is a
passionate novel as rich in ideas as it is genuinely moving.

191. What does Aunt Lynn mean by “quench your ... thirst”?
(A) excite your interest
(B) spark your curiosity
(C) satisfy your desire
(D) call your attention to
192. What is Aunt Lynn giving to her niece?
(A) a new copy of Corelli’s Mandolin
21

(B) a book she bought from a used-book store
(C) an old book she checked out from the library

(D) her old copy of Corelli’s Mandolin
193. What changes the rhythm of the island?
(A) the meddling of the gods
(B) a sudden surge of mad people
(C) the arrival of soldiers
(D) a fatal tidal wave
194. What best describes Pelagia?
(A) a sought-after woman
(B) a woman in love with two men
(C) Mandra’s suitor
(D) an irresolute woman
195. Which statement affirms the description: "a landscape where the factual blends
seamlessly with the fantastic"?
(A) "emotionally sweeping"
(B) "wakes up to find itself in the jaws of history"
(C) "the gods dabble in the affairs of men"
(D) "the tide of World War II rolls onto the island's shores"

Subject: Survey Results
We have the results of our Preferred Investments Survey. I have attached the "Types of
investments" table.
There is one change on the survey compared to last year. We divided one
major category into two parts. The parts are "buildings" and "property." That's why we don't
have a number from last year to use as a comparison.
We talked to 1,000 investors between March 1 and March 15. While most of them put
their money into a variety of investments, the survey shows that this year there was a

greater variety in the type of investment chosen than last year. More people are purchasing
each different type of investment. For example, look at the number of mutual fund investors
last year (800) as compared to this year (850).
These results will help our company better decide how to sell our investment products. We
predict three types of investment will increase in popularity, and they should be heavily
advertised over the next year. Also, we predict that three investments will decrease in
popularity. We should decide what to do about those. Are you available on Friday morning?
Let's discuss the declining investments.
