The Faculty of Economic and Management
Sciences, established in 1925, is the lar-
gest of the ten faculties of the University.
It consists of the following eight depart-
ments: Accounting, Business Manage-
ment, Economics, School of Industrial
Psychology, Logistics, Public Management
and Planning, Statistics and Actuarial Sci-
ence and the University of Stellenbosch
Business School.
The Faculty occupies three buildings on
the main campus at Stellenbosch, while the
postgraduate programmes of the Business
School and the School of Public Management
and Planning are offered on the Bellville Park
Campus. Both campuses have modern librar-
ies and modern technological facilities. The
Bellville Park Campus also offers up-market
accommodation.
Our departments offer postgraduate pro-
grammes of the highest quality. This is borne
out by, for example, internationally sought-af-
ter accreditations such as EQUIS (European
Quality Improvement System) and AMBA (As-
sociation of MBAs) for the University of Stel-
lenbosch Business School. Our training for
professional registration in specialist fields
such as Accounting and Actuarial Science
enjoys national and international accredita-
tion by professional institutes and our stu-
dents’ performance in external examinations

is proof of the quality of our programmes. In a
similar vein our programmes in Industrial Psy-
chology and Human Resource Management
are acknowledged by professional bodies. In
other disciplines, excellent quality of tuition is
ensured by cooperation agreements; these
cover matters such as the exchange of stu-
dents and teaching staff, and joint research
projects with internationally recognised aca-
demic institutions.

This Department was established in
1920 and has a long tradition of re-

search in macroeconomics, structural
economic issues, and economic pol-
icy formulation, implementation and
assessment in the context of a devel-
oping country.
The Department offers a full-time,

one of two broad options. Those who
take the General Economics option
gain a specialised knowledge of eco-
30

nomics and economic analysis. The
Financial Economics option is career-
oriented, preparing students for jobs
in the financial sector of the economy.
The Department also offers an Hon-
ours programme in Economics and
Mathematical Statistics. Covering a
specialised study not only of econom-
ics, but also of statistical inference,
this programme equips students to
analyse relationships in the economy.
Building on from an honours degree,
or its equivalent, students may choose
between a research-based Master’s
programme, requiring a thesis that is
the result of independent research, or
a taught Master’s programme. The lat-

ter is a full-time programme that aims
to produce competent professional
economists who can be employed
in the public and private sector. Stu-
dents can opt for General Economics,
or specialise in Economics of Educa-
tion, Development Economics or in
Trade and Industrial Policy.
The Master’s programme in Eco-
nomic Policy is a part-time, taught

at the Stellenbosch Campus twice a
year for two weeks at a time. It equips
people who have not undergone spe-
cialised training in economics, but

Ten years before it was founded in
1946, this Department, one of the old-
est in the country, already presented
statistics as a subject, mainly for stu-
dents in the commercial sciences. In
this way we ended up in the Faculty
of Economic and Management Sci-
ences. The number of environments
needing tuition in statistics is increas-
ing even more rapidly. In 1985 we
also started offering actuarial science.
Presently we house the Centre for Sta-

tistical Consultation; proof that we are
serious about active research.
Fields of study
Statistics (up to doctorate), math-
ematical statistics (up to doctorate),
actuarial science (up to Master’s) and
financial risk management (up to doc-
torate). Listed below is a summary of
the fields covered.
Statistics and mathematical statistics:
Advanced statistical inference, Bayes
statistics, biostatistics, bootstrap
and related computer-intensive tech-
niques, categorical data analysis, con-
sultation practice, data mining, experi-
mental design, extreme value theory,
large sample analysis, multidimen-
sional scaling, multivariate statistical
analysis, probability models and sto-
chastic simulation, probability theory,
non-parametric techniques, sampling
theory, S-PLUS and R programming,
statistical learning theory, statistical
quality control, survival analysis, time
series analysis.
Actuarial science: The postgraduate
32
33
programmes cover certain of the later
subjects of the Faculty and Institute of

Actuaries. In the Honours programme
Financial Economics (CT8) and Core
Application Concepts (CA1) are cov-
ered. The Master’s programme covers
subjects on the Specialist level and
also requires the submission of a re-
search project/thesis. Successful stu-
dents are now able to obtain exemp-
tions (from the examinations of the
Faculty and Institute of Actuaries) for
not only the Core Technical subjects,
but also for CA1 and up to two Spe-
cialist subjects.
Financial risk management: Financial
mathematical statistics, financial risk
management and portfolio theory.

lars on our postgraduate programmes
in actuarial science, mathematical sta-
tistics and statistics.

*Programmes suitable for international
students
The University of Stellenbosch Busi-
ness School (USB) is situated on the
University’s Bellville Park Campus in
Bellville, Cape Town. It is one of the
few management schools outside
Europe that is accredited by the Eu-
ropean Quality Improvement System
(EQUIS) of the European Foundation
for Management Development. The
School’s MBA programme has also
been accredited by the Association
of MBAs (AMBA) in the UK. The MBA
programme received unconditional
accreditation from the quality com-
mittee of the SA Council on Higher
Education. The School is a member of
several international academic bod-
ies, including the European Doctoral
Association in Management and Busi-
ness Administration (EDAMBA).
MBA
The MBA curriculum aims at develop-
ing students’ competencies in high-
level leadership. At the beginning of
the programme, students undertake
tests to determine their leadership
profiles. After they receive feedback,

students embark on an individualised
interactive programme which extends
over the full duration of the MBA study
period and is designed to achieve
optimal personal leadership develop-
ment. After students have completed
the core modules of the MBA pro-
gramme, they may choose from a va-
riety of elective modules or specialise
in a specific study area. Certain mod-
ules may be followed at foreign busi-
ness schools with which the USB has
exchange agreements.
The MBA programme is presented in
the following formats:
MBA (Full-time)*
One year of lectures during the day;
research report in the 2nd year (Eng-
lish).
MBA (Part-time)
Two years of lectures in the evening;
research report in the 3rd year (Eng-
lish).
MBA (Modular)*
Two and a half years of block lectures
(4 blocks of 8 days during each of
the first two years, and 2 blocks of 8
days during the third year: totalling
10 blocks); research report in the 3rd
year. Two programmes to choose from

(bilingual: English and Afrikaans; or
English).
Master’s in Development Finance*
This Master’s programme runs over
one year full-time (with daily lectures)
or over two years modular (with five
lecture blocks of two weeks each in
this period). Core modules include
quantitative methods, microfinance,
project finance, corporate gover-
nance, political and economic dimen-
sions of development in Africa, and
small-scale enterprise development.
Master’s in Coaching*
This Master’s programme is offered by
the USB in conjunction with Middlesex
University in the UK.
MPhil in Futures Studies*
This Master’s programme is presented
by the Institute for Futures Research
in cooperation with the USB. The pro-
gramme, which runs for two years, is
presented electronically by way of in-
teractive telematic education.
PhD in Business Management and
Administration*
This two-year programme involves re-
search culminating in a dissertation. A
limited number of bursaries are avail-
able for full-time students.
