CHAPTER 2: PROFESSIONAL PROCESS
During two-month internship at Khanh Hoa Radio and Television Station, I worked at the
Department of News. Two main tasks that I perform are listed below:
 Translating news from English to Vietnamese (4 weeks, from February
17th,2020 to March 15th,2020)
 Translating news from Vietnamese to English (4 weeks, from March 16th, 2020
to April 17th, 2020)

In the first period, I translated news from English to Vietnamese at the World News room
of the department of News. My team had 3 members including Thuy Quynh, Yen Thoa
and Le Vi. Each one had to translate 6 units of texts (about 6000 words). The texts were

got from BBC News (on the website www.bbc.co.uk ) and CNN (www.cnn.com ). After
that, we could optionally choose places for completing work instead of work at the office.
When having difficulties in translating or any problems during the process, we could
keep contact with the supervisor to ask for some advice and suggestions. At the 4th week
of internship, we handed in 18 units of translated texts in total and 2 evaluation forms to
the supervisor (Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh) at the office. And we would receive them at the
5th week of the internship.
In the second period, I translated news from Vietnamese to English at the English
translation room of the department of News. Different from the previous period, each one
in my team worked with 3 supervisors. After choosing the supervisor, I met my
supervisor (Ms. Tran Thi Thuy Linh) and started my work at the 5th week of the
internship. The supervisor gave me 2 units of texts (about 2000 word) and I translated
them from the 5th week to the 7th week. Like the first period, I could optionally choose
places for completing work instead of work at the office. When having difficulties in
translating or any problems during the process, I could keep contact with the supervisor
to ask for some advice and suggestions. After completing translating each unit, I sent it to
the supervisor via email. Then, she sent me the edited files. At the 7th week, I handed in
edited units, two evaluation forms and the diary of internship to appreciate, confirm and
sign. At the 8th week, I continued to write the internship report and finish my internship.

3. Methods of task completion
During these 8 weeks, I used my skills and techniques to complete assigned tasks as
follows.
12

First of all, I spent the first day at the department of News to get information about
translating news. So, I obtained background knowledge of many fields. After that, I was
assigned English news to translate into Vietnamese and vice versa. Through the work, I
used dictionaries like English – Vietnamese dictionary, Vietnamese – English dictionary,
Collocation dictionary, TFlat dictionary, materials about translating skill and visited
some websites regarding to topics of the texts.
Moreover, I translated texts on my own based on knowledge of translating having
acquired at school. When having the uncertainty of some ideas presented in the texts, I
searched information and checked collocations on Google at first. Then I tried my best to
read and comprehend the main ideas the texts. Sometimes, I asked my teammates for
suggestion.
Furthermore, I asked some friends and experienced translators for some advice and tips
to translate news and topics relating to Finance, Economy, Banking, Military and Polity.

4. Results of the internship
I successfully completed my mission with 6 units of translated texts (more than 6000
words) in the first period and 2 units of translating texts (more than 2000 words) in the
second period of the internship in time.
CHAPTER 3: PRACTICAL EXPERIENCES
1. New skills acquired and skills improved
In the first period, I learned a lot of techniques and methods from the supervisor’s
feedbacks when she corrected and edited my translating work.
First of all, I needed to look up the dictionary carefully and try my best to translate with
my ability. For example, “attend+N” not “attend to+N”. Second, it is not easy to
paraphrase sentences from Vietnamese to English. Before translating, I should read and
understand the meaning, and then summarize and note main ideas and rewrite in English
without changing meaning. Third, choosing and using sentence structures are very
important to avoid misunderstandings when reading in English. Forth, there were
complex Vietnamese sentences and were divided into many parts. Each part will be
translated into a short English sentence. A Vietnamese sentence can contains many the
words that seem to be difficult to translate into English, so it can be translated by two or
more than two English sentences.
Translating required meticulosity and flexibility. A translator can use dictionaries and is
not allowed to use Google translate.
Moreover, to cope with translating news from English to Vietnamese, I had to equip
myself an in-depth understanding and more knowledge in the press and many fields such
as economy, education, polity, military and so on. During two-month internship, I
encountered a lot of terms in economy, polity, military and finance. This urged me to

13

develop the searching technique, reading materials and using word on my own, which is
also an essential element to become a professional translator in the future.

In addition, I improved some personal skills that are very necessary for an intern. I had
chances to communicate with staffs in the office and face-to-face with the leaders there,
which helped me improve my interpersonal skill and feel more confident. Second, I was
willing to learn knowledge, skill, new techniques and learn from my mistake during the
internship. Besides, the internship helped me develop team work skill and problemsolving skill to complete my work. It is very important for me to work seriously and be
on time. Besides, I also learned about problem-solving skill when working with the
supervisors.
2. Acquired skills employed
At school, I learned a lot of techniques about translating general texts, mainly focused on
techniques in translating economic, tourism and news texts. In translating, the translator
can utilize any techniques and must make sure that their work is as closely matched with
the source text as possible.
To complete the assigned tasks, I used some techniques that I cumulated from the gained
knowledge as below

15

Table 2: List of translating techniques learning at school
Items
Techniques
In translating from the source language to target language, I
could add some words in sentences long as the meaning
and the logic were not changed.
For examples:
- Translating from English to Vietnamese: “Kuwait is
banning ships from Iran coming into the country’s
Shuaiba, Doha and Shuwaikh ports amid fears of the novel

coronavirus, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported
Sunday.”
Word addition “Hãng thông tấn KUNA của Kuwait (một quốc gia ở Tây
Á, nằm tại rìa bắc miền đơng bán đảo Ả Rập) đưa tin hôm
Chủ nhật: Kuwait đang vận cấm tàu từ Iran sang đất nước
cảng Shu Shuaiba, Doha và Shuwaikh trong bối cảnh lo
ngại về tiểu thuyết vi-rút corona.”
+ “The outbreak in Iran began in the holy city of Qom,
according to state media.”
“Theo truyền thông Iran, dịch cô-rô-nô bùng phát tại
thành phố Qom – một trong những thành phố du lịch nổi
tiếng của quốc gia này.”
When translating, I could omit some words in a sentence as
long as the content was not changed or the coherence
between paragraphs was kept.
For examples:
-Translating from English to Vietnamese
+“At least 33 Turkish sodiers killed in an air attack by
Syrian regime, Turkish governor says”
“Có ít nhất 33 binh sĩ Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ thiệt mạng trong một
Word
cuộc tấn công trên không của Syria.”
subtraction
+ “Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu spoke to

Syrian attack, according to a statement released by the
ministry.”
“Sau vụ tấn công Syria, Bộ trưởng Bộ Ngoại giao Thổ Nhĩ
Kỳ ông Mevlut Cavusoglu đã có cuộc đàm phán với Tổng
thư ký NATO ông Jens Stoltenberg thông qua cuộc gọi.”

+
Long sentence

There were a lot of complex sentences in a paragraph. To
16

Numbers and
Figures

make it easier to translate, I did some steps as follow. First
of all, I read the content of the text in source language and
analyzed the grammatical structure of the sentences. Then,
I listed main ideas in the paragraphs and their relationship
in terms of time and logic. Next, I marked the word order
of the sentence. After that, I divided the long sentence into
smaller parts based on their main ideas and translate each
part. Finally, I compared to the original sentences to make
sure that the texts in target language were qualified.
For examples:
-Translating from Vietnamese to English:
+ « Xây dựng phương án bảo đảm cung ứng đầy đủ những
mặt hàng tiêu dùng thiết yếu, đặc biệt là lương thực, thực
phẩm, thuốc để đáp ứng nhu cầu người dân; làm tốt hơn
nữa việc cung cấp thơng tin hàng hóa, thị trường, tránh
tình trạng đổ xơ đi mua hàng tích trữ; có biện pháp xử lý
nghiêm người cố tính đầu cơ, găm hàng, tăng giá. »
“Plan projects to see to adequate supply of consumer
goods, specially foods and medicines to meet people’s
need. In addition, it is essential to quickly give people

market’s information in order to avoid buying goods as a
speculation and stockpiling.”
Numbers and figures are important aspects to be noted
when translating texts business, economy, banking and
finance fields. To deal with numbers and figures, I had to
choose accurate words to show them without changing
their meanings.
For examples:
-Translating from English to Vietnamese
+. Health ministry spokesman Kianush Jahanport told
state media that 15 new cases were identified in the last 24
hours.
Người phát ngôn của Bộ Y tế ông Kianush Jahanport đã
cho biết trên truyền thơng quốc gia rằng đã xác nhận có

+ Coronavirus cases in Italy rise to more than 100

+ “Hong Kong confirms five additional coronavirus cases,

“Xác nhận có thêm 5 trường hợp mắc vi-rút cô-rô-na ở
17

Word order

Proper noun

Negative form

Hồng Kông, tổng số ca lên đến 74”

Word order in English and Vietnamese is not similar
totally. So, I could flexibly rearrange words in the new
sentences in such a way that it was appropriate for the word
order in target texts.
For examples:
-Translating from English to Vietnamese:
+ “US officials in 2018 accused Chinese forces stationed in
Djibouti of injuring US pilots with a laser that was fired at
a US C-130J aircraft.”
“Năm 2018, các quan chức Mỹ đã cáo buộc các lực lượng
Trung Quốc đóng quân tại Gi-bu-ti đã bắn tia la-ze vào
máy bay C-130J làm các phi công Mỹ bị thương.”
Both in English and Vietnamese, proper name is not
translated. The name of company, organization or event is
dependent on the context. If it is a well-known international
company, I should remain its English name.
In English, the order of proper nouns is the company,
organization or position name and person name
respectively whereas in Vietnamese the order should be
person name and then name of the company, organization
or position.
For example,
-Translating from English to Vietnamese:
+ “The Lombardy region has at least 89 cases, according
to the head of the country’s Civil Protection agency,
Angelo Borrelli. “
“Ông Angelo Borrelli – người đứng đầu cơ quan bảo vệ
quốc gia cho hay: Khu vực Bologna có ít nhất 89 trường
hợp nhiễm.”
+

Negative expression in English is different from one in
Vietnamese. In English, we can use negative prefixes such
as un –, in -, ir -, il -, im -, mis -, non -, counter – and so
on and negative suffix –less to express.
For example,
However, in Vietnamese, there are any affixes that cannot
be translated into “không”. So, it depends on Vietnamese
literature stylist that translator can use suitable words in
context during translating.

Active and
passive
sentences

Idioms

Part of speed
transformation

For example,
Active sentences are commonly used in Vietnamese
language and passive sentences are commonly used
English language. When translating English passive
sentences into Vietnamese “bị”, “được” or “chịu” are
usually omitted and we should use active sentences instead.
For example,
+ Bright powders and water balloons are launched in the
air by participants of "the Festival of Colors" with the aim

of smearing and throwing as much gulal -- a fine powder
offered in several shades -- as possible on friends and
family.
Tại lễ hội sắc màu, người tham gia sẽ tung những viên
bột và bóng nước lên khơng trung, ném bột vào nhau với
mục đích vui chơi, chúc cho nhau những điều tốt lành và
thể hiện lòng biết ơn thần linh đã ban cho họ một mùa
màng tươi tốt.
When translating from Vietnamese into English, we should
use passive sentences.
For example,
+ “Trong đó, Bệnh viện Bệnh Nhiệt đới tỉnh đang theo dõi,
cách ly 21 trường hợp (bao gồm 11 trường hợp mới nhập
viện đang lấy mẫu và chờ kết quả xét nghiệm)”
“In there, 21 cases (including the 11 latest cases taken
samples and waiting for test results) have been monitored
and isolated at Khanh Hoa Hospital for Tropical
Diseases.”
An idiom is a group of words whose meaning considered as
a unit is different from the meanings of each word of
considered separately. They specify to one culture and
language. So, the best way to cope with English idioms into
Vietnamese and vice versa is to learn by heart them and
then use those meanings in translating work.
Because of the difference between English and Vietnamese
expressions, the word class should be transferred to be
appropriate for context of the texts.
For example,
-Translating from English to Vietnamese:
+ “Schools and a wide range of public events across the

northern Italian region of Lombardy will be closed
19

starting Monday in response to the coronavirus outbreak
there, regional authorities announced Sunday.”
“Hơm Chủ nhật, Chính quyền khu vực Bắc Ý thơng báo:
cho các trường học sẽ đóng cửa và hàng loạt các sự kiện
công chúng trên khắp miền bắc nước Ý vùng Lombardy
sẽ ngưng hoạt động từ thứ Hai để đối phó với sự bùng
phát dịch corona.”
+ “South Korea extends school holiday for a week”
Các trường học ở Hàn Quốc kéo dài kì nghỉ thêm 1 tuần
+ There were no further details about the content of the
call.
Thông tin chi tiết về nội dung cuộc gọi không được tiết
lộ.
Besides, translator should avoid translating word-by-word. I also applied academic skills
including taking notes, paraphrasing, summarizing and synthesizing which helped to
supplement my work.
3. Problems encountered
During the first period, I had difficulties when contacting with the supervisor (Ms. Hanh).
I asked her for some help when having difficulties via e-mail, I did not receive her
feedbacks. She had no reply my SMS. She just answered my call at the first time. At the
5th week, I called her for handing in document and she denied that she was my supervisor
because she did not information about supporting for interns. But, at first she agreed to be
my supervisor and sent her mail if I had difficulties. Then, I tried to explain about the
problem and remind what she told us before. She remembered and she agreed to confirm
my internship. However, she did not care about our results (including Vi’s result and
Thoa’s result). She just saw and kept evaluation forms. Till April 12th, 2020 she still did

not give them back to us. I tried to call her but she did not answer the call. It means that I
had my internship without supporting. To me, it was a big problem because my result
was not confirmed and I did not know whether my ability in translating news was good
or not. This could affect to the quality of the internship and appreciation.
4. Lesson learned
During the internship, I had a chance to experience real situation, apply my knowledge
and techniques to translating. I learned from experience and defect to improve skills for
work and promote work quality. I have got used to working under pressure and making
plans to complete assigned tasks on schedule. Moreover, I have promoted ability and
responsibility; and have had a serious attitude to work. I could better in time
management, keeping discipline in work and working without cease during work time.
Furthermore, I recognized that experience is a great teacher and a good starting is a half

way of succeed. Also always keep in my mind “Never give up” and “Practice makes
perfect” when facing difficulties.
5. Recommendations
5.1

Recommendations for Khanh Hoa Radio and Television Station

After the internship, I have a recommendation as follows. Supervisor assignment is very
important to interns because supervisors directly instruct, support and appreciate the
result of internship. Thus, it is really necessary to have a good interaction between the
supervisor and the intern during the internship to reach high effect. Obviously, the bad
interaction (I could not contact with my supervisor in the 1st period of internship) caused
many difficulties and disadvantages for the intern to improve and gain skills and
experience. It affected to the quality and result of the internship. Therefore, I hope that it
will be clear and specific in assigning supervisors.

5.2

Recommendations for the University of Khanh Hoa

To aim at enhance the effect in organization and procedure for internship, I would like to
give some recommendation as follows.
First, it is very important to implement completely and drastically the content and
quantity of evaluation forms. It should be clearly specified and classified standards of
evaluation forms and in guideline of internship report in detailed in such a way that it
might be sufficient for each field (including Interpreting – Translating, Service and
Travel).
Second, the general plan of internship, should be clear and specified that the internship
would be kept on or stopped due to the break-down relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Third, it seems really necessary to flexibly correct time, and evaluation standards of the
internship because of the break-down. Forth, regarding to the number of capacity
evaluation forms (Phiếu đánh giá năng lực thực tập chuyên ngành), it should be used
only one form in the whole internship period. Because it will be difficult for those who
encounter difficulties in contacting and working with supervisors if it is compulsory to
confirm and sign one form per week.
CHAPTER 4: CONCLUSION
The internship was a good chance for me to interact with translating job, specially
translating news. I provided me an intensive understanding and practical experience
about the process of translating news.
During the internship, I expanded a lot of new knowledge, skills and worked with
experienced translators who were my instructors.
Thanks to the internship, I could find out my strengths and weaknesses relating to
translation, which helped me identify what knowledge, skills and techniques that I need
to enhance in the future.
21

In addition, the internship provided me plenty of new insight and motivation to adapt
work environment and feel more confident for the future job in translating field.
After the 8-week internship, I complete my internship successfully with the devoted help
and wholehearted guidance of my supervisors at the department of News at Khanh Hoa
Radio and Television Station. Once again, I would like to thank to the University of
Khanh Hoa and Khanh Hoa Radio and Television, two supervisors (Ms. Hanh and Ms.
Linh) at the KTV and two supervisors (Ms.Tra and Ms.Thuy) at the UKH.
Thank you very much!
