ENHANCING THE DELIVERY OF PE AND INTEGRATION WITH THE CURRICULUM
-BLENDED COURSE
This course is a blended learning course with 3 days face to face contact and 2 days online material . The face to
face element of the course will be a mix of practical and workgroup sessions focusing on the role of Gaelic Games in all
strands of the Curriculum. Participants will take part in a number of practical sessions with Coaching Ireland qualified
Tutors over the week in Hurling/Camogie, Football/Ladies Football, Handball and Rounders’.
These practical sessions will assist Teachers in bringing GAA into PE Classes with an emphasis on inclusion for all
children including those with disabilities. The sessions will focus on Fundamental Movement Skills along with the
teaching of the main skills of all Gaelic Games Sports in a fun and enjoyable manner. Coaching Aids and materials will
be given to all participants. The practical sessions will be fully interactive with participation by all on the course.
Teachers will be assisted in putting in place session plans for coaching Gaelic Games in their own class as part of the PE
Curriculum
Teachers will be introduced to the GAA Fun Do Programme and will develop their ICT skills through building their

own PE lessons using the Fun Do interactive DVD Rom. This also facilitates skill demonstration for children through
using the Interactive Whiteboard or PC. Teachers will therefore be better positioned to facilitate use of ICT with their
pupils in the classroom.
The Céim ar Aghaidh will help to develop Teachers skills in using the GAA resource through Numeracy and Literacy
themes. Classroom lessons and plans are available through all our GAA resource booklets.
To up-skill teachers in ICT usage via internet the GAA ELearning resource will be used for certain modules. This
resource can be accessed at www.learning.gaa.ie and all those on the course will have personal access for the duration of
the course. Other online resources will be referenced (www.gaa.ie, www.ladiesgaelic.ie, www.camogie.ie,
www.gaahandball.ie, www.rounders.gaa.ie) along with ICT resources such as multimedia-Fun Do DVD cameraProjects, Céim ar Aghaidh Resource & the GAA Handball & Rounders’ Coaching Resource will be explored. This
should further enhance the Child Numeracy and Literacy Skills through the use of this resource.

group can help develop children’s' personal, social and psychological skills.
Learn how to facilitate the development of skills such as....listening, interpretation, self-esteem, diversity, attention span,
communications, maths and reading skills, and much more using the Drum Circle Format.
No previous musical experience is needed to take this course, and the course is delivered in a very user friendly fun
way. The course will improve your musical/rhythmical skills, and some time will be given to exploring the
health/recreational/holistic wellness benefits of group drumming for the participants also. Many teachers have attended
this course up to three times to refresh and upgrade their musical skills.... to relax in a fun atmosphere after a long hard
year.....and to ensure they have a tool-kit of rhythmical games and activities on their return to work in September.
Waterford Teachers’ Centre has 3 full-class sets of African Drums which are loaned out to schools for 2/3 weeks
so that pupils can have a Drumming Class for that period.
The course facilitator is Eddie O’Neill who is a certified Health Rhythms facilitator, and holds a Diploma in Drum
Therapy. If you need more information about the course you can phone him at 087 9151134. Teachers who take this

SPHE – MINDFULNESS AS A CROSS CURRICULAR METHODOLOGY FOR EMOTIONAL
HEALTH AND WELBBEING
Mindfulness is increasingly recognized as an essential educational tool. This course recognises the role of teachers
as a powerful resource of mindful presence in the classroom and gives them simple and transformative tools to
benefit the children in their care.

Teachers will be invited to cultivate their own mindful presence, so that you can teach from your own
experience.

The content will support the aims of SPHE Curriculum, in a mindful approach, that begins by promoting the
personal development of the child, fostering in themselves a sense of care and respect for themselves and
then extending this to the care and appreciation of each human being.

We will look at practical ways to nurture a foundation of mindfulness and heartfulness in children through
ideas, exercises, activities and resources. Mindfulness’ practices will promote the aims of the curriculum to
enable the child to make informed decisions and healthy choices.

The classroom will be looked at as to how it can be cultivated into a supportive mindful community. With
an interconnected approach, Mindfulness will be considered as core to enabling and developing in the child
an appreciation of cultural diversity and active citizenship and democracy.

Cultivating happiness, working with difficult emotions, mindful breathing and connecting with nature
practices will be explored for ways to make them meaningful and inviting for children.

An exploration of appropriate assessment methods will take place to ascertain learner outcomes and
experience and teacher practice, in each strand of the SPHE curriculum that is being addressed.

The Benefits:
Each person in a community affects the others. If we apply the tools of mindfulness when working with our school,
families and communities, both children and adults will benefit from the resulting peace, harmony and joy.
Mindful Children are better able to focus and concentrate, experience decreased stress and anxiety, are empathetic
and understanding of others. Mindful Teachers have an awareness’ of themselves and are attuned to their students,
nurture a learning community where students flourish, know how to manage and reduce stress, have healthy
relationships at work and at home.
Maeve regularly delivers mindfulness and Natural Health Therapy courses and workshops to professionals including
Teachers, Healthcare workers and Business people. As an art teacher, community involvement tutor and artist, Maeve
has been involved in many projects in her ongoing practice that enhance school communities and their communities in a

PRACTICAL LOCAL HISTORY - CLONMEL
The aim of this course is to provide teachers with practical ways to teach the local history themes in the SESE
curriculum using the built environment around them. Though based in a modern urban environment the course will
endeavour to explore how any locality can be used to teach local history.
Participants will learn how to ‘read’ buildings, how best to use maps and the photographic record, and where to find
materials online. They will experience recording old structures and graveyards and engage in history trails.
The course will involve a mix of ‘talk and walk’, varying from information giving sessions, workshops and group work
to actively exploring the local built environment, both urban and rural.
Both new and previous participants of this course are welcome and all are reminded to come dressed for weather, good
or bad!
