Abstract
Regularexerciseisanimportantpartofahealthylifestyle.Healthylevels
ofphysicalfitnessrequireregularparticipationinactivitiesthatgenerate
energyexpendituressignificantlyabovetherestinglevel.Exercisetesting
hasbecomeanintegralpartoftheevaluationofchildrenandadultswith
congenitalandacquiredcardiovasculardisease.Thecardiopulmonary
exercisetestisuniqueamongcardiactestswhicharetypicallyperformed
whenthepatientisatrest.Theevaluationofthepatientintheexercise
physiologylaboratoryallowsthecliniciantoassessthecardiovascular
systeminastatethatismorelikelytoreflectthatofthenormaldaily
physicalactivities.

availabletothecardiovascularspecialistisperformedinsucharestingstateand
sometimesinasedatedstate.Theevaluationofthepatientintheexercise
physiologylaboratoryallowsthecliniciantoassessthecardiovascularsystemin
astatethatismorelikelytoreflectthatofthenormaldailyphysicalactivities.
Optimalexerciseperformancerequirescontinuouscoordinatedinteraction
betweenmultipleorgansystems.2Therolesoftheheartandlungsaretoprovide
adequateenergysubstratestoworkingskeletalmuscleandtoremovetheend
productsofaerobicandanaerobicmetabolismduringexercise.Mostofthe
