Abstract
Systemicarterialhypertension,oneofthemostcommoncardiovascular
diseasesinadults,hascontinuedtoincreaseinprevalenceacrossallage
groupsamongchildrenandyoungadults.Theseincreasingnumbersare
primarilysecondarytotheepidemicofchildhoodobesityandoverweight.
Alargebodyofliteratureconfirmsthatbloodpressurelevelsduring
childhood,similartoexcessweightstatus,trackintoadulthoodwith
abnormalbloodpressurelevelsduringchildhoodoftenresultingin
hypertensionasyoungadults.Respondingtothisemergingpublichealth
issue,expertcommitteeshavecalledforscreeningforelevatedblood
pressureinasymptomaticchildren,particularlyashypertensioninchildren
remainspoorlyrecognized.Primaryoressentialhypertensionisthemost
commonformofhypertensioninadults,butitisbecomingincreasingly
clearthattheoriginofthisconditionisinchildhoodandnowaccountsfor
themostcommoncauseofhypertensioninagechildren10yearsandolder.
Secondaryhypertensionisassociatedwithmoreseverehypertension,often
withmoreimmediateclinicalconsequencesandiscommonlycausedby
renaldisease.Earlyrecognitionofhypertensionandjudicioususeof
suitableantihypertensiveagentsenablethebloodpressuretobecontrolled
inallpatients,withminimalundesirablesideeffects.Consequentlythe
managementofhypertensionisparticularlyrewardingforthepracticing
pediatrician.
