Abstract
Commonarterialtrunkisararecongenitalmalformationoftheheart.The
essentialanatomicfeatureisthepresenceofanarterialtrunk,whicharises
fromtheventricularmassthroughacommonventriculoarterialjunction,
givingrisedirectlytothesystemic,pulmonary,andcoronarycirculations.
Inmostcenters,surgicaltreatment,theonlyappropriatecurrenttherapeutic
approach,isnowperformedroutinelyinearlyinfancyfollowingonly
noninvasivepreoperativeinvestigations.Operativemortalityisnowlow,
althoughitmaybeincreasedinpatientsinwhomthereareassociated
abnormalities.Inmostcases,thesurgicalrepairincludesplacementofa
conduitaspartofthereconstructedpulmonaryoutflowtract.Becauseof
this,patientsmustbefollowedindefinitelyinacenterthatspecializesinthe
careofthosewithcongenitalcardiacdisease,asmostwillrequire
procedurestoaddressstenosisoftheconduitinlaterlife.

Introduction
Commonarterialtrunkisanuncommoncongenitalcardiaclesion.Theessential
anatomiccharacteristicisthepresenceofacommonventriculoarterialjunction
thatgivesrisetoanarterialtrunk.This,inturn,givesrisetothesystemic,
pulmonary,andcoronarycirculations.Inthischapter,weexaminesomeofthe
detailsofthisanatomicarrangement,themethodswherebytheconditionis
diagnosed,andthetechniquesforitssurgicaltreatment.Thereareincreasing
dataonthelong-termoutcomesforpatientsbornwiththisconditionandofthe


importanceoflifelongsurveillance,whichwillalsobeexamined.
