philosophicallyunsoundtobasedefinitionsofa
givenstructureononeofitspartsthatwas
variable.Instead,theyestablishedthecrucial
principleofthe“morphologicmethod,”stating
thatthestructuresmustbeidentifiedonthebasis
oftheirmostconstantcomponents.Itwasthis
concept,inturn,whichrevealedthatalmostall
heartswithadouble-inletventriclewere
functionallybutnotanatomicallyuniventricular..

notion,initiallyputforwardbyMaudeAbbott,
thattheanteriorchamberinthesettingof
double-inletleftventriclewasnomorethanan
infundibularoutletchamber.Inthis
investigation,however,heartswith
atrioventricularvalvaratresiawereexcluded
fromthe“univentricular”category,albeit
withoutanyscientificreasonbeingofferedfor
theirexclusion..
