John Fisher, a builder, and his wife Elizabeth wanted more living space, so they left their small flat for an old 40-metre-
high castle tower. They have spent five years turning it into a beautiful home with six floors, winning three architectural
prizes.
‘I love the space, and being private,' Elizabeth says. 'You feel separated from the world. If I'm in the kitchen, which is 25
metres above the ground floor, and the doorbell rings, I don't have to answer it because visitors can't see I'm in!'
'There are 142 steps to the top, so I go up and down five or six times a day, it's very good exercise! But having to carry
heavy things to the top is terrible, so I never buy two bags of shopping from the supermarket at a time. Apart from that,
it's a brilliant place to live.'
'When we first saw the place, I asked my father's advice about buying it, because we couldn't decide. After paying for it,
we were a bit worried because it looked awful. But we really loved it, and knew how we wanted it to look.'

Passage 2:
During the teenage years, many young people can at times be difficult to talk to. They often seem to dislike being ed.
They may seem unwilling to talk about their work in school. This is a normal development at this age, though it can be
very hard for parents to understand. It is part of becoming independent of teenagers trying to be adult while they are still
growing up. Young people are usually more willing to talk if they believe that are asked out of real interest and not
because people are trying to check up on them.
Parents should do their best to talk to their sons or daughters about school work and future plan but should not push
them to talk if they don’t want to. Parents should also watch for the danger signs: some young people in trying to be
adult may experiment with sex, drugs, alcohol or smoking. Parents need to watch for any signs of unusual behaviour

The most recent government statistics reveal that only about one third of all
current
American families fit the traditional
mold and another third consists of married couples who either have no children or have none still living at home. Of the
final one third, about 20 percent of the total number of American household are single people, usually women over sixty
–five years of age. A small percentage, about 3 percent of the total, consists of unmarried people who choose to live

psychological problems such as depression and anxiety.

Best friendship evolves with time - we cannot go out and pick our best friend. We become friends with people who share
common interests – at school or through hobbies, for example.

are speaking will sometimes look away for a few seconds when they are thinking or trying to find the right word. But they

Passage 4:
Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made use of various forms of communication. Generally, this
expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier,
communication is accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the
deaf, and the mute have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very
picturesque and exact and can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot.
Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be a way
of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a negative
reaction.
Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille (a system of raised dots read with the fingertips), signal
flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn and instruct people.

Passage 3:

Man and most animals need a constant supply of water to live. Farmers need water for their crops. Hydroelectric dams
hold back needed water and provide water for homes and industries.
Trees, grasses, and other plant life play an important part in the natural circulation of water, and thus help conserve it.
Without plants most water would run off as soon as it falls, taking away valuable soil. Rapid runoff would cause frequent
floods, and leave little water during dry seasons.
Nature has many ways of conserving and controlling water. But man often upsets the water balance in his desire to grow
more crops. He drains ponds, swamps, and wet lands. He plows under the natural soils, cuts timber, and dredges and
straightens streams. These changes reduce natural storage of water and speed runoff.
Water can be held on the land by planting vegetation. Forests and grass should be planted where there are no natural
growths. Dams built across rivers help hold back the water. Reservoirs behind the dams store water during wet seasons
for use in dry seasons. Dams help prevent floods by controlling the flow of water.
Many town and cities get their water from nearby lakes and rivers. Some communities dump sewage and garbage into
the water, making it unfit to drink. Water pollution is one of our most serious problems. Progressive cities have sewage
treatment plants. These plants return only safe water to the streams or lakes. Many states have laws that prohibit
companies from dumping raw industrial wastes, such as liquids from a metal-plating factory, into streams. These wastes
often endanger the supply of drinking water. They also kill fish. Most industrial wastes can be treated to make them
harmless.
26. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as part the natural circulation of water?

Passage 4:
A combination of sewage, salt, air pollution, sun, sand and wind may destroy the huge statue on the outskirts of Cairo.
This statue of the sun god has the body of a lion and the face a human being. It is five thousand years old, but it is too
baldy damaged to be completely saved.
The statue has already been dug out of the sand three times. However, the latest problems are much more serious. First,
there are no proper drains and water pipes in the neighbourhood and the underground passages round the statue have
become blocked. Too much water has been running into the stone statue for several years. As a result, tiny pieces of
salt have been left on the stone and have damaged it.
Secondly, air pollution from the increasing amount of traffic in Cairo is also destroying the ancient statue. The air is so full
of poisonous gases that it is making the stone crumble and decay even faster.
Thirdly, the statue is being damaged by extremes of temperature. For example, although the air is very cold at night,
during the day the stone of the statue becomes very hot under the strong sun. Other natural forces such as severe
sandstorms also attack the statue.
Finally, the tourists who visit the statue every day also cause a lot of damaged.

II. Reading comprehension:
Passage 1:
Many years ago, people often said “A woman’s place is in the home.” But Americans do not feel that way any
more. Today, women make up about 43 per cent of the America labor force. There are about 45 million working
women in the United States, and a large number of them are married women with children. In 1980, for the first
time in the nation’s history there were more working wives than household wives. Looking back to 1940, we can
see a picture of some very rapid change. In 1940, only 15 per cent of married women held jobs.
Today, most young women choose to work even when they have young children. Why do they work? The most
important reason is that they need to earn money. But another reason is that women today are better educated
and they have more opportunities to work in various professions than women had earlier.
