cansearchoutapromisinglocationand
depositheryoungthere.Butplantsneedhelp.
Iftheseedssimplydroppedfromtheplantto
theground,theywouldhavetocompetewith
eachotherandwiththeirovershadowing
parentforsunlightandsoilminerals.So
successfulplantfamilieshavedeveloped
mechanismsfordispersingtheirseedsfarand
wide.Thesemechanismsincludeseed
containersthatpopopenandpropeltheir
contentsinalldirections,seedappendages
thatcatchthewindorthefurofapassing
animal—andstructuresthathitcharide
insidepassersby.Fruitsareplantorgansthat
actuallyinviteanimalstoeatthem,sothatthe
animalswillcarrytheirseedsaway,andoften
passthemthroughtheirdigestivesystemand
deposittheminanourishingpileofmanure.

amongthembybeinglargeandarmored,or
tinyandeasilyspilled,orpoisonous.)
So,unliketherestoftheplant,fruitis
meanttobeeaten.Thisiswhyitstaste,odor,
andtexturearesoappealingtoouranimal
senses.Buttheinvitationtoeatmustbe
delayeduntiltheseedsarematureandviable.
