PhD Pipeline Operates 2nd Summer Workshop
The PhD Pipeline Opportunity Program
kicked off its 2nd Annual Summer
Workshop with an informative and
inspiring address by Dr. Carolyn
Callahan- Director of the School of
Accountancy at the University of
Memphis. There are 20 undergraduate
Scholars from historically underrepresented populations enrolled in the
May 31- June 14, 2012 institute at
Duke University‟s Fuqua School of
Business. They represent 16 colleges
and universities, and each Scholar
must produce and present a research
paper. They learn about benefits of
and strategies for obtaining a PhD in

Business from faculty representing a
dozen colleges and universities.
Successful Scholars will receive

a $500 stipend and an iPAD3.
New sessions this year include: global
business, preparing your personal
statement for graduate school
applications, communications skills
and business etiquette. There is also
a new GMAT preparation session by
Akil Bello of Bell Curves. The new ATEASE learning strategy helps prepare
the PhD Pipeline Scholars for more
effective future participation in the
PhD Project. Frank L Matthews, CoFounder of the award-winning
magazine, DIVERSE Issues in Higher
Education, is the scheduled Keynote
Speaker for the Closing Program at
8:30 AM, June 14, 2012 in the R.
David Thomas Executive Education
Center at Duke‟s Fuqua School.

“I believe that persistence and drive,
accompanied with institutional support
and resources, will result in many of
these students attaining their PhDs
and becoming successful faculty,”
stated Dr. Avery.
At Tuskegee University‟s Brimmer
College of Business & Information
Science, Dean Tejinder Sara named
Dr. Charlotte Morris as Faculty
Associate. Dean Sara expressed full
support for the PhD Pipeline

Work-Life Balance Tip

“Follow your passion! When
you do, there is no conflict
between balancing work and
life. If you really enjoy your job,
then it doesn’t feel like work.
Most days, I love what I do and
would probably do it for free.”
Lemuria Carter, PhD

Congratulations PhD Pipeline
2012 Summer Workshop
Scholars!
The PhD Pipeline Opportunity
Program 2012 Summer
Workshop is May 30 – June 14
at Duke University, The Fuqua
School of Business!

Higher Education is a Prosperous Investment
By the end of the spring semester,
and often upon graduation, many
think that there is finally a break in
learning. Actually there is always an
opportunity to learn, whether in a
summer internship, in a full time
job, or through a mentor. Take

advantage of the summer season as
an opportunity to use creative ways
to continue learning. Review a
reading list for a PhD or graduate
program and checkout other
relevant reading material from your
school‟s library, become a research
assistant, study for the GMAT or
GRE and take GMAT and GRE
preparation courses, and stay
abreast of current events.
Begin investing early in your pursuit
of a graduate degree and PhD by
reading, practicing your critical

thinking, research and writing skills.
Partner with your university‟s faculty
associate and other professors to
inquire about research assistant
opportunities. Help generate ideas for
your on-campus PhD Pipeline
workshops for the 2012-2013
academic year. Volunteer in your
community by spending a few hours a
week tutoring youth. There are
numerous ways to continue your
education once summer starts, and
beyond graduation.
Read a few of the books on the
Recommended Summer Reading List

on page 4. Friend us on Facebook
(PhD Pipeline Opportunity Program) to
share other continued learning tips,
and post a comment about your
summer projects and reading
material.

2011 Summer Workshop Alumni: Scholars in the Spotlight
Scholars of the first alumni class of
the PhD Pipeline Summer Workshop
have been busy maintaining Dean‟s
lists or preparing for summer
internships or earning scholarships.
The Scholars would agree the 2011
Summer Workshop was their best
summer yet.
Natalie Palacios, Florida International
University (class of 2013), will return
to Hamilton Sundstrand this summer
for her second internship with the
company in the Human Resource
department. “I remember applying
for [the Summer Workshop] program
and how I wish I could have applied
again this summer and experience
everything over again,” exclaimed
Natalie Palacios. This past year
Natalie was nominated for the
„Student Employee of the Year‟ Award
at FIU, and she has been on the

Dean‟s list several times.
Bria Brimmer, 2012 Accounting
honors graduate of SC State
University will attend Hult
International Business School in
London, England to pursue a masters‟
degree in Finance.

Monet Scott, Wake Forest University
Kemper School (class of 2014),
recalled the 2011 Summer Workshop,
“I enjoyed meeting other inspiring
young minority students but also
meeting and conversing with minority
business professors.” Monet was
selected to participate in Wake Forest
Business School‟s FINM (BS in
Finance/MS in Accountancy) program.
Monet Scott has been awarded a
scholarship from the NC Association of
Certified Public Accountants
(NCACPA).
Michael Joyner, 2012 graduate of
Johnson C. Smith University, will
spend most of the summer conducting
a study on “Impatience in Strategic
Games?” during an eight-week
research program at the George
Washington Carver Research Program
with the Sam M. Walton College of

Business at the University of
Arkansas. He finalized his
undergraduate required research
paper on “Irrational Consumer
Behavior and Internet Marketing,”
which he began during last summer‟s
workshop. He is now preparing for
the GRE and GMAT exams.

Faculty Associate Spotlight: Dr. Lemuria Carter
Dr. Lemuria Carter, PhD Pipeline
Opportunity Program North Carolina
A&T State University Faculty
Associate, was awarded the NC A&T
Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence

Program Highlights: Best Practices
for On-Campus Workshops
Attracting undergraduate students to on-campus
workshops about pursuing a PhD may seem
challenging, but consistent efforts are rewarding.
Florida International University almost doubled
student attendance to their second on-campus
workshop by extending invitations to MBA
students. Be strategic and creative in your ideas
to implement workshops on campus. Start with
topics that will educate students, and enlist the
assistance of other professors. Start planning
now for your 2012-13 academic year on-campus
PhD Pipeline events. FIU and Duke University
have successfully hosted several workshops on
the following topics:

Panel Discussion: PhD Professors

Graduate Studies in Business: Beyond the

MBA, Faculty Lifestyle and Perspective

GMAT Seminar by Akil Bello from Bell Curves
Akil Bello is an expert GMAT trainer who
conducts GMAT training for the PhD Project
and MLT, and also during the PhD Pipeline
Summer Workshops.
