Working as a designer for the past 7 years has taught me that no matter what you work on, each project is different and unique in its own
way. The clients, the audience and the design combine to create a relationship between the user and the brand. As a designer, I enjoy
inuencing that relationship with my strong design skills, aesthetic clarity and understanding of marketing principles.
Designing for an international language education company helped me see the impact good design has on global communication. I
learned to balance my creative vision with the limitations of designing for multiple languages, for which there is no one size ts all solution.
From directing photo shoots to designing adverts, my role within the company encompassed many areas including corporate branding,
brochure production, print design and other design projects as required. I have designed for several other companies, including the
University of Westminster and the British National Archives, as well as freelanced for smaller companies. Each experience has helped me
grow as a designer and as a person.
In addition to graphic design, I’ve always held the unofcial title of “Tech Geek”. I am the one in my ofce who gets the printers to work
properly and knows how to get rid of the pesky donut in InDesign. From mastering the ofce Mac to being tech support for my mom’s PC,
I am the “go-to” girl for anything technical. I enjoy learning new programs and methods, so when I am not working you will normally nd
me scouring the Internet for new design tools and tutorials. I enjoy learning from my peers and I keep up to date with the latest methods.
Aside from the usual Adobe standards like InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, I use QuarkXpress, Corel, and several web tools like
Dreamweaver, Flash and more. And if there are programs I don’t know much about, it won’t be for long.

The legality of CCTV
Despite sometimes heated public discourse about the implementation and management of public surveillance pro-
grams, CCTV and other forms of surveillance have become nearly ubiquitous in modern society. Cities recognize that
increased urbanization has resulted in high-density areas where people, businesses, and community groups are sus-
ceptible to organized criminal attacks and other unlawful activities. The map below shows details of how CCTV is
implemnted around the world.

LONDON
In London an extensive network of CCTV cameras was in
place when the English riots struck. While the cameras
did not stop the unrest, they did play a signicant role in
ultimately identifying and convicting many of the offenders.
Beyond CCTV
Advanced Analytic CCTV is not the only urban surveillance technology that is growing in popularity and engendering
public debate. Other advanced monitoring technologies that are heating the discussions include:
VIDEO ANALYTICS
Based on computerized processing and analysis of security camera video streams,
video analytics software alerts law enforcement and other agencies to events of
interest in real time. In the safe-city context, video analytics capabilities include
license plate recognition, vehicle tracking, people and vehicle counting, optic

tracking and video quality monitoring.
How we used this in our safe city solution
What a difference a riot makes
According to a survey of 2,000 adults ages 18+ conducted
by ICMResearch and Synectics, public opinion in Great
Britain regarding the effectiveness and acceptance of CCTV
surveillance changed for the better following the riots that
swept through England in August, 2011.
In all, 94% of those surveyed supported the use of CCTV to
identify those involved in the looting and disorder. 75%
claimed to feel safer in public areas, knowing that CCTV
cameras were in operation; two-thirds wanted to see an
expansion of the CCTV program; and seven in ten would be
worried if their local council reduced CCTV coverage.
Community-led surveillance programs
City leaders are wise to think about educating and empowering—and not only protecting—the citizens and business
owners who comprise the lifeblood of their constituencies. Some community-engagement programs focus
exclusively on businesses and are even pioneered by business owners themselves.

FACEWATCH
The highly regarded safer-communities program was independently designed and
promoted by Simon Gordon. The scheme uses the Internet to help bridge the gap
between CCTV and the police, speeding up the reporting process, providing easy
information sharing between local businesses, and giving police departments an
advantage in terms of time savings and resolution rates.
