Native American Mascots should not be used.
<Tab/>Native American mascots should not be used. Today we can see that Mascots are
used at many places such as sport teams, school, library, etc. However it is the time to withdraw
the Redskins nickname. Thus it should not be used because of following reason.
"Mascots reduce the entire race to caricature at a time when health and poverty problems in Indian
country need to be addressed with utmost significance." (Perkins, Joseph. Sports team mascots,
New York Times, 2003). The vast majority of Native Americans do not like the "Indian" Sports.
They references and wish for the entire student to put an end to their tradition which is of
recreation and racism. Even if we think our school shows the greatest respect for our team. (2)
"Mascots create discrimination."(Taylor, Kelley R. Sports Law & Legislation, Education
Digest, Prakken publication, 2002) Generally the mass of disputes about using American Indian
names in school sports have assumed violation of the Equal protection clause of the US
constitution, which protect a person from discrimination on the matter base of race, color, national
origin, religion, and sex. (3) "Mascots sometimes create Hostile environment." (Taylor, Kelley R.
Sports Law & Legislation, Education Digest, Prakken publication, 2002) Hostile
environment created by many different ways of using mascots. For certain students, a racially
hostile environment created by the American Indian in school mascot's attire and behavior, logos,
and team, which would violate federal laws. In facts a racially environment may be created by
oral, written graphic, or physical conduct redacted to an individual's race, color or national origin
that is adequately severe , constant, or pervasive, so as to obstruct with or limit the ability of an
individual to participate in or benefit from the recipient's program or activities. (4) '"Stereotypical
American Indian images that "mock and trivialize Native American religion and culture."' (Taylor,
Kelley R. Sports Law & Legislation, Education Digest, Prakken publication, 2002) By using
Native American images and cartoon it will directly affect the religion and culture. I sometimes
make a fun of individual's culture which is results in discrimination or inequality. Images and
cartoons underestimate the religion thought and beliefs, and sometimes make a fun of it. (5)
"Mascots rarely affect individual civil rights." (Leo, John. War against Warriors. US News
& World report, 1999) One of the schools used the names "Squaws" and "Warriors" for its
sport teams, so one of the child's parent reported that her child's civil right were violated.
Investigation also been done by the US department of education for this issue. (6) "Potentially
harmful ethnic imagery is inappropriate in a learning environment." (Taylor, Kelley R. Sports Law

& Legislation, Education Digest, Prakken publication, 2002) Many of the schools used to
post the images of Native American and many of them are strongly ethnical. These images create
a negative impact on young students mind. They should not be comfortable, supported and
respectful to others in ethnical environment.
<Tab/>Due to the above mentioned reasons and really happened exampled, we can now say
that Mascots should not be used in school, universities or any other locations because it may cause
discrimination, violence, racisms, or many other anti social or anit-religious activities.
