FOREWORD
AMERICA’S DOG SHOW
Welcome to the 137
th
Annual Westminster Kennel Club All
Breed Dog Show – with history-making changes for 2013.
If you’ve been here before, or if you are with us for the
rst time, we are delighted to present the Group and Best
In Show competition to you in the evenings from Madison
Square Garden once again, where we have been almost
exclusively since 1877.
But as you know by now, this year we have moved the
daytime portion of our judging – the breed judging – a few
blocks to the north to Piers 92/94 here in New York City.
This move allows us to return to the true benching of our
dogs, something that makes us a bit unique in the dog show
world. Even in the vast expanse of more than 200,000 square
feet of exhibition space, you will now be able to easily nd
particular dogs, owners and handlers, and visit with them
“up close and personal.”
The benching area is the heart and soul of Westminster,
the chance to learn about the breeds and about responsible
ownership from people who have devoted their lives to their
dogs, in the show rings and in their homes.
The move to the Piers also allows us to expand our entry to
more than 2,700 dogs, the largest entry in 15 years. This
makes the show more competitive – as if it wasn’t enough
so already – and makes it more fun for more exhibitors and
for the spectators, too. We have also added competition in
the classes for the opportunity to win points towards an

AKC conformation championship; the chance to win Grand
Championship points for Select Dog and Select Bitch; and
the addition of the Reserve Best In Show award.
So again, welcome to Westminster 2013. There are many
Westminster Ambassadors and Club Members available
throughout both venues and they will be happy to answer
your questions or guide you to a particular location.
We’re happy that you are here making history with us. Enjoy
the show!
Seán W. McCarthy Thomas H. Bradley, 3d
President Show Chairman

IMPORTANT NOTICE
PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!
RULES AND PROCEDURES

EXHIBITOR TICKET INFORMATION
1. Regardless of the ownership of the dog(s) one exhibitor’s gate
admission is sent for each dog entered. The gate admission is
valid for both days of the show and is needed for admittance.
The person accompanying the dog must show an admission
ticket and the dog identication before the dog will be
admitted. DO NOT BRING ANY DOGS THAT ARE NOT
ENTERED. There is no provision for unentered dogs at this
show. Exhibitors must preserve their dog identications
which must be surrendered when dogs are removed from
the show.
2. All tickets, dog ID's, etc., are sent to the address noted on the
entry form. Owners or the owners' duly authorized agent are
responsible for the correctness. No duplicate packets may be

mailed.
3. Tickets returned by the Post Ofce marked “Undeliverable”
are held at the Superintendent’s Ofce.
JUDGING
1. The judging starts promptly. During the hours of judging
exhibitors are to be on call and have their dogs ready to bring
into the judging ring promptly.
2. The owner of the dog or the handler is responsible for the
presence of their dog in the judging ring. There is no rule of
this Club or the American Kennel Club that requires a judge
to wait for an owner or handler to bring his dog into the ring.
3. All cell phones, pagers, beepers, etc. must be on “mute”
or “vibrate” when in the ring area. Persons with ringing
or toning cell phones, pagers, beepers, etc. will be
escorted from the ring area. No cell phone photos/videos
are permitted.
4. Ramps at the sole discretion of the judge, approved
breeds may be judged on the ground or on a ramp: Boykin
Spaniels, Clumber Spaniels, Field Spaniels, Sussex Spaniels,
Welsh Springer Spaniels, Whippets, Irish Terriers, Kerry
Blue Terriers, Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers, Staffordshire
Bull Terriers, Chinese Shar-Pei, Chow Chows, Keeshonden
& Polish Lowland Sheepdogs. (Boykin Spaniels & Whippets
may be judged on the table, ramp or the ground.)
Basset Hounds & Bulldogs are expected to be judged on the
ramp during breed judging.
This list may be revised from time to time, and the current
list can be found on the AKC website in Judging Operations.
A judge requesting the use of a ramp must give reasonable
notice to the Show Superintendent/Show Secretary prior to

the day of the show. AKC approval is not required.
Ramps may be used in emergency situations to judge any
breed. (In all but emergency situations, the exhibitor has no
recourse. In an emergency situation, where use of a ramp is
4
not indicated in the premium list, an exhibitor has the option
of withdrawing their entry and receiving a refund.)
LOSS OR DAMAGE
1. The management will not be responsible for the loss or
damage to any dog or property of any exhibitor, whether
the result of accident or any other cause. It is expressly
understood that every dog at the show is in the care and
custody and control of its owner or handler during the time
the dog is on the show premises. See also the agreement on
the reverse of the entry form.
2. The welfare of an exhibitor’s/spectator’s child is the
responsibility of the exhibitor/spectator. It is expressly
understood that exhibitors/spectators will exercise control
and restraint over their children while they are on the show
premises.
3. The Westminster Kennel Club and its Superintendent
caution all persons entering the show site and show
grounds against all hazards which may exist, including,
but not limited to: Condition of the site/grounds, parking/
loading/unloading areas, entrances, oors and stairways,
elevators and escalators, oor coverings, walkways, tenting/
canopies, electrical appliances, cords and ttings, exercise
pens, and the presence of animals. All persons should take
into consideration this is a sporting event and dress, act
and exercise caution appropriate for the activity involved.

All persons entering the show, the grounds, site and show
areas for whatever purpose do so entirely at their own risk.
By virtue of entering the show, the entrant has indicated
their acceptance of the terms listed in the premium list and
assumes all risks involved.

for any items they wish to take from the Piers or Madison
Square Garden buildings before 6:00 P.M. and 9:00 P.M.
respectively. All dogs must be removed from Madison Square
Garden by 11:30 P.M. each evening. See Exhibitor Ticket
Information #1 on premium list page 28. See also separate

6
responsibility to have the appropriate release forms to exit
the building with dogs/equipment.
5. Exhibitors wanting dogs within different Variety Groups
benched together with their handler in the multi-breed area,

or multiple dogs of the same breed benched together in the
breed benching areas must have completed the benching
form provided in the premium list and either forwarded with
the entries or as indicated in premium list Entry Information

this provision and in such an instance the superintendent
would be under no obligation to bench the dogs together.
There will be no switching from the regular breed areas to
multi-breed area or vice-versa. There will be no switching
between handlers' spaces. NO EXCEPTIONS. ID's will
state where dog is benched. It is your responsibility to send
complete, correct information.

on each day they wish to be in the Multi-Breed area. NO
EXCEPTIONS.
7. Under no circumstances may exhibitors change their bench
numbers.
8. No signs and decorations may be afxed to any Pier or MSG
surface; that is, no nails, carpet tacks, thumb tacks, or staples
may be used. All decorations must be re-retardant. No signs
over 11'' x 14'' may be displayed at your bench. No signs may
be displayed on the bench other than a plaque or emblem of a
show-giving Specialty Club to which the dog's owner belongs,
or giving the kennel name & address of the owner. No prizes
or ribbons shall be displayed on the bench except those won
by the dog at this show.

9. Chapter 13, sections 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the AKC Rules Applying
to Dog Shows is strictly enforced. The benching of dogs is
an integral part of the dog show, the importance of which
cannot be overstated. Exhibitors/Handlers who do not
adhere to the benching requirements of the AKC and The
Westminster Kennel Club as noted in the premium list
run the risk of The Westminster Kennel Club refusing all
future entries from you for their show. In addition, dogs
are presumed to be under the care custody and control of
the person(s) listed on the entry form. Neglect of a dog in the
benching areas could result in an event Committee hearing.

9
BENCHING FORMAT FOR 2013
Due to the remodeling of Madison Square Garden to serve its core activities,
The Westminster Kennel Club has made decisions regarding their show
with the safety and well-being of the dogs, exhibitors and spectators
foremost in mind. All Breed benching/judging and Junior Showmanship
Preliminaries on Monday and Tuesday will take place at Piers 92/94, a
trade show and special event venue with more than 200,000 sq. ft. of
exhibition space. There will also be Multi-Breed space available for those
persons meeting the requirements to be in that space. The Variety Group
benching/judging and Junior Showmanship Finals will be held at Madison
Square Garden, Monday and Tuesday evenings. A layout of all venues is
included in your packet. All exhibitors will be assigned to a specic area
that will be reserved for dogs and grooming.
The Piers will see the return of our traditional xed benching. The
benching space for our Best of Breed Winners at Madison Square Garden
will consist of individual 5' x 5' pipe and draped spaces for each dog. Each
of the MSG spaces will include a single 4' x 4' bench and an appropriately
sized grooming table which is owned by the club.
Just as this will be a radical change for our exhibitors, it will also be a
change for our spectators. All dogs MUST be on their benches and must be
able to be viewed by the public. A bench card displaying the dog's bench/

armband number will be supplied by the Superintendent at the bench;
handlers in the Multi-Breed section MUST attach the supplied bench card
to the dog's crate. All entrants MUST have their contact information for
the duration of the show afxed to their crate or bench space. This card is
included in your packet.
Grooming will take place at the dog's bench space. There will be a limited
number of power drop boxes available in each venue. Please observe the
facilities’ requirement that only one plug at a time be used in each drop
box. Failure to adhere to this requirement can cause an interruption in the
electricity and there is no guarantee as to when it would again be available.
Dogs are required to be on their benches until the published release time
except for exercising or judging. Monday's Four Variety Group Winners are
required to be on benches Tuesday in a reserved space from 11:30 A.M.
until 3:00 P.M. in Pier 94.
To afford the best utilization of the balance of our space in the benching/
grooming areas, all regular vendors will be located at Piers 92/94.
Westminster will provide bus transportation from the Hotel Pennsylvania,
Afnia Manhattan and the New Yorker Hotel to the Piers for exhibitors
and their dogs beginning at 5:30 A.M. and return trips as dogs are released
from benching up to 11:30 P.M. Bus transportation for Best of Breed
winners and their handlers will be provided from the Piers to Madison
Square Garden and a return to the Piers each day. They begin at 3:00 P.M.
with the last leaving MSG at 11:30 P.M. The last bus will leave the Piers
and go to MSG at midnight.
We ask the cooperation of our exhibitors as we institute these changes
at both our new and traditional facilities respectively. We request you
bring only those items necessary for the grooming, exhibition, and crating
comfort of your entered dogs. Crates/tack must be stacked whenever
possible. Fire regulations will not permit chairs or other impediments
in any aisleway. Saving space(s) is not permitted. Personnel will be

available to assist those needing help getting their crates/equipment to the
appropriate area and in stacking crates/equipment.
10
NOTE: Juniors receive a separate admission
pass. Misuse of this Junior Pass could result in
an Event Committee hearing, removal from the
show and/or exclusion from future competition
at this show.
Juniors who substitute for the original dog
they have entered in the Junior Showmanship
Class with dogs that are not entered in one of
the offered classes at this show will not incur
an additional fee.

nounce reserved Variety Group seating for holders

managing the staging process with the approval of and
under the guidance of the NYC Police Department. All
exhibitors will be responsible to have their Unloading/
Loading Hangtag clearly placed in their left windshield
or rearview mirror and to have their vehicle ashers on.
Stella’s focus is to get exhibitors swiftly and safely into
the Piers for unloading without interfering with local
trafc. At the Piers, beginning at 6 am, exhibitors will
be directed to respective Unloading areas and assisted
by Harry Miller’s “Site Control” personnel. Exhibitors
will be required to have their vehicle ashers on while
unloading at the Piers and are responsible for unloading
their vehicles as quickly as possible. All vehicles must
be moved immediately once unloaded. Crate Handlers
will assist those needing help to their benching area
once they are unloaded.

be dispatched to the Piers for unloading. The hangtag you
received in your ticket packet should be on your rear view
mirror for ease in directing you to the appropriate Pier in the
unloading zone. SEE Details in the" EXHIBITOR UNLOADING
& LOADING at the PIERS" Sheet in your packet.)
Consult Benching and Ring Layout in your packet for ease in
nding your benching row and judging ring.
Due to crowded conditions, the Event
Committee is advising all exhibitors to give

yourself plenty of time to get to your Ring.
It is our advice that you locate your Ring in
advance and have a route planned to get there
in time for your judging.
Those exhibitors/handlers who will be
benched in Pier 92 but who will be showing
in Pier 94 or vice-versa need to allow time to
make that trip. There is a dedicated exhibitor
