INTRODUCTION
According to Ethnologue, there are currently 7,111 known languages spoken
by people around the world. That number is constantly in flux because we’re
learning more about the world’s languages every day. And beyond that, the
languages themselves are in flux. They’re living and dynamic, spoken by
communities whose lives are shaped by our rapidly changing world. Therefore,
translation has become an important aspect of the world for exchange of
information, ideas and much useful in various spheres of human activities.
For any global business to succeed, it has to reach out to the clients.
Businesses are now going to the international markets in a bid to get more global
customers. Globalization has made it possible for the ventures that want to sell their
goods overseas to do so. However, that comes at a cost. For instance, if your
original market was in the USA, it means you mostly used English as the language
of communication. If you expand the global business operation to Spain, things
need to change. Since most of the people in that country speak Spain, you should
translate the content into a language that they are conversant with. Translation,
therefore, is critical for social harmony and peace.
As an English – majored student of Thuong Mai University, I have an
opportunity to study and work at Ichigo Translation and Foreign Languages Joint
Stock Company for my internship course. This is a valuable opportunity for me to
practice my English knowledge, communication skill and learn experience and soft
skills from everybody in the company. I myself think that the company is an ideal
organization that students of foreign languages can collect information and get
valuable experience of work.

PART 2: THE INTERNSHIP PROCESS AT ICHIGO TRANSLATION AND
FOREIGN LANGUAGES JOINT STOCK COMPANY
2.1 The tasks are performed during the internship
For one month from December 28th, 2020 till January 22th, 2021, I did an

internship at Ichigo, a translation and foreign languages joint stock company. My
job is a translator in the company. During the internship, I’m responsible for
translating Vietnamese legal documents to English and editing those legal
documents. This would be a valuable time for me, as I had a chance to reinforce the
knowledge, which I gained from the university. In addition, I had opportunity to get
into professional working environment. During my internship, I worked directly
with my instructor, Mr. Nguyen Van Quyet – The head of English department. I
spent 4 weeks on training in the Ichigo Company. I went to the company 5 days a
week. And, my working time table is dependent on the working time table of the
company.
Office time: - In the morning: From 8:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m
- In the afternoon: From 13:30 p.m to 17:00 p.m
I would report my job by myself as follows:
2.1.1. Week 1: From December 28th, 2020 to December 31st, 2020.
On the first day of this week, I had an opportunity to meet with the director of
Ichigo Company, visit around the workplace and socialize with everybody working
there and I read the documents about the company. Then I spent the whole day at
the company learning about the documents that I was translating during this
internship. After showing me some types of documents, my instructor told me to
research them at home thoroughly to get the best preparation for the next days.
Other days of the week, I was assigned a couple of Vietnamese student’s
records to translate into English. Student’s records normally include ID cards, high
– school diplomas, birth certificates, high – school transcripts, application for
income certificate, etc. Based on my knowledge of translating that I have prepared,
these documents did not make it difficult for me. However, I spent more hours
translating than people did in the company because I’m not still used to the job.
10

Therefore, I need to try my best to improve my translation speed and be more

productive.
2.1.2. Week 2: From January 4th, 2020 to January 8th, 2021.
On first few days of the 2 nd week, I kept translating student’s records into
English to make myself gradually catch the job. On the others, I also had many
opportunities to attend meetings, conferences and seminars with all people speaking
English. Besides, I also had a chance to go to Noi Bai airport to pick up Mr.
Roggers – one of my director’s friends from Australia. Then, my director invited
him to come to her office and he helped me check my translation, identify my
mistakes and correct them. Thanks to my director giving me many opportunities to
contact with foreigners, I feel a bit more confident when communicate with
foreigners now.
2.1.3. Week 3: From January 11th, 2021 to January 15th, 2021.
After 2 weeks, my translation speed improved. My instructor also recognized
that; therefore, he gave me complex documents about “Microwave Oven
Instruction Manual”. At the university, we mainly focused on translating
economic texts as my university is specialized in commerce. Well, based on my
knowledge of translating that I have been taught at the university, I translated texts
on my own. When the confusion or uncertainty of some ideas presented in the texts
came, I first searched related information on Google. Then I tried my best to
comprehend the texts. Besides, I visited some websites regarding to Microwave
oven to broaden my knowledge and my vocabulary and to sharpen my word choice
in the translating work. The last way I could do was to ask for my instructor’s
advice and suggestion. He was more experienced and was familiar with these
words; it would be easy for him to get it. It took me 4 days to finish translating that
manual, then I had to check it carefully the typos again and again. After all, I had to
send the official translation to the other part of the company for printing.
2.1.4. Week 4: From January 18th, 2020 to January 22nd, 2021.
This week, I was assigned to translate “a service contract” from a law firm. I
encountered a number of terms that I’ve not met before; therefore I looked up in the
specialized dictionary to find out the new words. I had used the Internet to solve this

11

kind of problem. The content in the contract was rather long, it took me a lot of time
to complete it. And, to finish my translation documents, I still need Mr. Quyet help
me to check it again. When translating, I have to be faithful to the tone, purpose,
and message of the original while ensuring it makes perfect sense as a standalone
text in the target language. After 4 weeks, I was more familiar with the job and
everything gradually goes into orbit. Even though I only had 4 weeks for my
internship, I still felt thankful to that. I have learned a lot from what I was doing at
the company.
2.2 The difficulties and lessons learned
2.2.1 The difficulties
I just have 4 – weeks for internship course, that time is not enough for me to
know all practical aspects in the department including the difficulties it has to face.
However, in the last 4 weeks, I realized that to become a successful professional
translator, it takes more than just being bilingual. I need to embrace lifelong
learning in order to achieve true success. Languages are not static and we need to
keep up to date with new words and any official changes. Moreover, we need to
have knowledge about the industry, its technical vocabulary, its procedure:
specializing in specific industries, fields. We also must have good communication
skills to transcribe a message without altering its purpose and keep its actual
meaning. Language is only meaningful within its cultural context, and you need to
be fully aware of the context of the original text to accurately portray it in the
translation. Therefore, cultural awareness is fairly necessary because language and
culture go hand in hand.
To be honest, the department has highly qualified staff; they are very
professional, careful and hardworking. Especially they work in a very enthusiastic,
responsible and careful way with every single detail. But there is a problem related
the number of staff because lack of staff will make more pressure in work. They

have worked with a huge workload, they usually work over the office time.
2.2.2 Lesson learned
Although I have been working in the company for only a short time, I have
realized that it is an ideal place for the students majoring in English to do an
internship and get valuable experience. This would be a valuable time for me, as I
12

had chance to reinforce my knowledge, which I gained from the university. And,
this is also an opportunity for me to get into professional working environment.
Thanks to internship that enables me to experience real situation where any
problem can occur and it requires me to apply my knowledge and skills learned
from university, as well as, the company to solve the problem. It gave me a chance
to improve my problem – solving skill. I, sometimes, had no idea about the text that
came up to me. But, instead of seeking external supports, I must stand on my own
feet. Besides, my Google searching skill is also sharpened and my communication
skill is also improved from talking with my instructor, my colleagues as well.
Internship helps me realize how difference between academic and real – world
environment is. It also taught me that colleagues are a valuable source of advice and
guidance. And, I have gained many useful tips to translate English – Vietnamese
texts or Vietnamese – English texts more professionally.
After this internship, I found that my brain must take some training courses in
order to update the knowledge in the fields that ensures effectiveness in working as
a professional translator. In the working process, there is an useful knowledge I
learned from Mr. Quyet is Vietnamese people use “three dots” when they want to
list something but foreigners use “etc” instead. They just use “three dots” to mean
stories still continue.
More importantly, internship helps me gain confidence before entering the
workforce. I have given myself an advantage in the job market. After having
graduated, I already have some work experience in the form of an internship that

stands out to potential employers. This actually is one of the most internship
benefits to start my first job in the future.
After all, I have had a great opportunity to work in a perfect environment with
wonderful people that I think I have owned a lot. If I had to choose once again a
place to do my internship, I would still keep my first decision.

PART 3: STATUS OF USING ENGLISH AT ICHIGO TRANSLATION
AND FOREIGN LANGUAGES JOINT STOCK COMPANY
3.1 The reality of using English at Ichigo Company
13

There’s a reason demand for translation services is booming. While English
has been crowned as “the language of global business”, translation and interpreting
services remain a vital part of doing business around the world. During the
internship, I found that the English vocabulary of translators in the company
extremely diverse in different specialized fields such as study abroad, technology,
law, agriculture, etc. Having a large vocabulary helps them easily pick the most
suitable word for any contexts.
In the 2nd week of my internship, I have experienced as an attender in the
seminar that has occurred once a month for all employers in the department to share
knowledge about translation. To improve English speaking skill, people in the
seminar used only this language as a major one. The director realized that this is a
great opportunity for her staffs to gain knowledge and boost their English speaking
skill. Therefore, she always makes conditions for everyone to participate in any
seminars like this.
However, a translation naturally is a translated text that focuses on enhancing
people writing skills, not speaking skills. In the department, people tend to use their
mother tongue rather than English. This leads to the limit in communicating each
other in English. And, it is also the weakness of translators in the case of talking

with foreigners outside working hours.
3.2 Proposal for improving English proficiency at Ichigo translation and
foreign languages joint stock company
In the context of global economic integration today, English is a practical and
durable solution to improve the efficiency of human resources, increase
competitiveness for businesses. English plays an important role and is also a
powerful tool in business activities of Ichigo. Therefore, it is very necessary to
enhance the efficiency of using English at work. After one month of being an intern
there in the company, I would like to suggest several measures including:
In short – term:
Firstly, raise the awareness of staffs in the department about their roles and
help them understand the importance of English for translation and English
speaking skills in the office.
14

Secondly, the director should pay more her attention and encouragement of
translators. Translators should be allowed to participate in more and more seminars,
conferences, etc in a month.
Thirdly, be ready to award for those who actively use English in the working
environment.
In long – term:
Firstly, the company should build an environment of using entirely in English,
including department of Japanese or Korean language and even marketing
department.
Secondly, the company should organize competitions to evaluate as well as
improve the ability to use English in working environment.
Thirdly, the company should have standard criteria for recruiting to have a
firm foundation from the beginning.

15

PART 4: SUGGESTED THESIS TOPIC
Language is important because it's one of the main ways to communicate and
interact with other people around us. It keeps us in contact with other people. English
language is an example for the importance of a language because it is the
international language and has become the most important language to people in
many parts of the world. It is most widely used in communicating around the world,
Also it is spoken as the first language in many countries. English is playing a major
role in many sections like education, medicine, engineering and business. There are
many reasons that makes English is the most important language in the world.
The spread of English as the language of international business has made it
more important than ever for people working with colleagues, clients and partners
from other countries to understand each other, so that they can form effective and
productive working relationships.
In order to meet the demands of modern employers, everyone from university
graduates to senior managers must be able use English for work. Effective internal
and external communication is essential to the success of any business, but
professionals who need to communicate with each other as non-native English
speakers can greatly benefit from learning Business English.
However, as a Business English – majored student having more than 3 years
study at Thuong Mai University, I realized that in order to get good academic results
and use English successfully in practice, then combining skills such as listening
skills, speaking skills, presentation skills, etc is extremely necessary. During my
own days in school, I found that students are facing many difficulties with
presentation skills. Some students are concerned that forcing them to present in
front of their peers, can fuel their anxiety and have long – term harmful effects.
Therefore, I would like to suggest the thesis topics according to the current
situation:

16

1. How to improve presentation skills among Business English – majored students.
2. Factors affecting presentation skills in English for specialized students.

Next, I notice that Business English – majored students face many challenges in
converting texts from the source language into the target one, especially in
Vietnamese – English translation. That is also the reason I would like to suggest one
more topic as the following one:
3. Improving Vietnamese – English Translation for News of Business English

students.
The last topic I would like to suggest is: “How to integrate Social Media into
Business English learning for specialized students.” With so many social media
websites and so many people using them regularly, social media provide an endless
supply of content that make it easy for students to keep improving English. In fact,
students still do not know how to boost English through social media. Therefore,
this is the reason I take this topic into consideration.

CONCLUSION

17

During the period of internship, I received plenty of enthusiastic helps and
support from my instructor and everybody in the company. They guided and
encouraged me to overcome all the toughest challenges. I have to face with
difficulties but it was a meaningful time because I obtained many practical

experiences and lots of interesting knowledge of a translator.
Firstly of all, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the director who
gave me a chance and favorable conditions to take my internship.
Next, I would like to thank all colleagues who helped me finish my internship
course favorably. The friendliness and closeness from all of you didn’t make me
stressful, just 4 – week for internship but I felt that the department of English
language is like my family.
Last and also special person I would like to thank is Mr. Quyet – my internship
instructor. He managed to give as many opportunities as he could so that I could get
the most useful experience during my practice. He also gave me many pieces of
advice that I would try to follow for my future career.
One more time again, I would like thanks to all of your help during 4 weeks.
