WEEK 1 – DAY 1 – LETTER A
(90 minutes)
Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 Recognize and pronounce the letter Aa and its sound correctly
 Understand, recognize and say the four Aa words

1. Listen and repeat (A): Introduction of letter A, its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning
with Aa (5 mins)
 Use a card with letter Aa (or write on board the letter Aa) to introduce to the students the new lesson.
 Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name and the letter sound by saying: “This is the letter
A //. The letter A says //.”
 Repeat several times and check students’ pronunciation (letter A // and its sound //)
 Have students sing and do actions with the song: The letter A Song – Learn the Alphabet The Letter A

2. Trace, write, and say (C): (10 mins)
 Teacher show or write the “Aa” on the board, call some students to go on board, try to copy and trace,
write the letter correctly (It can be the capital A or lowercase a).
Listen, point and repeat (B) (10 mins)
 Use the phonics cards with apple, ax, ant and alligator, read the words out loud and have students
repeat.
 Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to understand the meanings of the four words.
 Stick the cards on board (or open the cards on the itool) and have students repeat the words chorally
several times (in the correct order and then in any order).
 Call some students to say the words out loud and correct their mistakes (if any)






Activity: Sit and Stand Game (5 mins)
Show the 4 phonics cards one by one. For example, show the card with ant, but incorrectly say alligator
or apple, the students will stand; if the words are correctly said, they will stay sitting.
Do the same procedure for the other two cards.
Give feedback

Break time: (5 mins)
Activity: Touching Game (15 mins)

Put the 4 phonics cards on the board (or open in the itool) in this order: apple, ax, ant, alligator
Divide the class into 2 teams; call one student of each team to stand 1m from the board
Read one of the three words out loud (e.g. an ant), students must run to tap the card of that word.
Student who taps the correct card first will get 1 point for his/her team.
Teacher continues the games until all the students have chance to play

3. Listen and chant (E) (5 mins)
Teacher play the video Oxford Phonics World - Unit 1 - Letter A - YouTube and asks the students to

chant along
 The whole class sings the whole chant.
Activity : Craftwork (10 mins)
 Teacher ask students to sit at the tables and open the Student book (Oxford phonics world 1) p.5 and
ask students to do part C
 Teacher explains the requirement of the tasks
 Teacher goes around to help students if necessary
Listening (5 mins)
 Teacher asks students to move to Part D and explains to the tasks
 Teacher plays the audio, pauses and explains the example
 Techer plays the whole audio, plays two times and goes around and checks students answers
 Teacher checks with the whole class the correct answer
 If students finish soon, teacher give students the handwriting worksheets and let them to trace or color
the letter Aa or apple, ant, ax, alligator
Activity : Wrap up (5 mins)
 Teacher open the video : Clean up song Clean Up Song | Kids Song for Tidying Up | Super Simple
Songs - YouTube and ask students to tidy up their things
 Have students sing and do actions with the Goodbye song
 Give feedback

Call a student from each team to stand 1m from the board
Read 1 of the 3 words out loud (e.g. an ant), the students must run to tap the card of that
word

- Call 4-6 students per team to the board if possible
- Give feedback

1. Listen and repeat (A): Introduction of letter Bb, its sound and how to pronounce the
words beginning with Bb (10 mins)
Use a card with letter Bb (or open the itool) to introduce to the students the new lesson.
Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name and the letter sound by saying: “This is
the letter Bb /bi/. The letter b says /b/.”
Teacher play the audio on itool, pause after the sound and letter and sáy along with
students
Repeat several times and check students’ pronunciation (letter Bb /bi/and its sound /b/)


 Have students sing and do actions with the song: The letter B Song – Learn the Alphabet Bài hát chữ cái B Học bảng chữ cái - YouTube

2. Trace, write, and say (C): (10 mins)
 Teacher show or write the “Bb” on the board, call some students to go on board, try to copy and trace,
write the letter correctly (It can be the capital B or lowercase b).

3. Listen, point and repeat (B) (10 mins)
Use the phonics cards on itools with bear, bird, bed, banana, read the words out loud and
ask students to repeat.
 Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to understand the meanings of the three words.
 Check students’ understanding: Teacher says the words, all students do actions and vice
versa.
 Call some students to say the words out loud and correct their mistakes (if any)
Break time: (5 mins)

4. Listen and chant (10mins)
 Teacher first plays the audio on itool or play the video English Stories Channel - Oxford



Phonics World - Unit 1- Letter B - YouTube (1:14-2:10)
Teacher plays the second times and ask students to sing along

Activity: Pass the phonics card Game (10mins)
Using the phonics cards of bear, bird, bed, banana
Line up the students into 2 teams
Give the first student of each team a phonics card and say “Go”
The students say the corresponding words and pass the phonics card over their head to the
students behind them
Next, those students repeat the word and pass the phonics card between their legs to the
students behind them
Continue to pass the phonics card over their heads and between their legs to the last
students
Whichever team hands their phonics card back to you and says the word correctly will get
one point
Whichever team has the most points will be the winner
Continue the game as many times as necessary
Activity: Craftwork (15 mins)

 Teacher ask students to sit at the tables and open the student book (Oxford phonics
world 1) p.7 and ask students to do part C
 Teacher explains the requirement of the tasks
 Teacher goes around to help students if necessary
 Teacher asks students to do part D. Teacher explains the requirement of the tasks
(students have to connect words of letter Bb to make a proper path)
 Teacher goes around to help students if necessary
 Teacher checks answer with the whold class, together saying again all the words


If students finish soon, teacher give students the handwriting worksheets and let them to trace or color
the letter Bb or bear, bird, bed, banana
Activity : Wrap up (5 mins)
 Teacher open the video : Clean up song Clean Up Song | Kids Song for Tidying Up | Super Simple

 Review the previous lesson by playing the “Find your partner”
- Give phonics sound cards to individual student around the class. Give the corresponding
phonics picture cards to different students
- Ask the student with the sound cards to stand up one at a time and say the sounds on their
cards
- The student with the picture cards listens. If the sound is in their word, they stand up,
show the card to the class, and say the word
- Repeat as many as possible
- Give feedback

 Have students stand at their desks
 Hand out the phonics cards
 Play the song. While the song is playing, the students pass the phonics cards to the next
student
 When the song stops, the student holding the phonics cards must name them
 Remember to correct students’ pronunciation
Activity: Craftwork (20 mins)
 Teacher ask students to sit at the tables and open the student book (Oxford phonics world 1) p.9
and ask students to do part C
 Teacher explains the requirement of the tasks
 Teacher goes around to help students if necessary
 Teacher asks students to do part D. Teacher explains the requirement of the tasks (students
have to connect words of letter Cc to make a proper path)
 Teacher goes around to help students if necessary

 Explain the test (ask TA to help to explain in Vietnamese)
 Teacher use the audio (or read the questions)
 Ask students to fill in the test by themself
 Go around and provide any necessary help

Activity: Run and Touch (15 mins)
 Put up some phonics cards on the board.
 Line up students into 2 teams of 6
 Call a student from each team to stand 1m from the board
 Read words out loud, one at time (e.g. ant), the students must run to tap the card of that

word
 The student who taps the correct card first will get 1 point for his/her team. The team with
the most points wins the activity
Activity: Music chairs (20 mins)
 Prepare all flashcard of A,B,C words
 Play the music and have the students walk around the perimeter of the chair circle.
 When the music stops, everyone must immediately sit in a chair.
 The one student left standing it out -> Teacher ask this student about the word in
flashcard
 Remove another chair and continue until only one student is left.

Activity: What’s the word? (10mins)

Call one student and whisper the word to the student. The student go back to their classmates and
silently mime the shape of the letters with their bodies. The first students to correctly guess the word
wins a point. Assign different letters and different words to different students and repeat.

point
Which team has the most point will be the winner

5. Listen and repeat. (A): Introduction of letter Ff, its sound and how to pronounce the
words beginning with Ff (10mins)
Use a card with letter Ff (or write on the board the letter Ff) to introduce to the students the
new lesson.
Instruct students how to pronounce the letter name and the letter sound by saying: “This is

the letter Ff /ef/. The letter f says /f/.”
Play the itool and ask the students to listen
Ask students to repeat several times and check their pronunciation (letter Ff /ef/ and its
sound /f/)

2. Trace, write, and say (C): (10 mins)
 Teacher show or write the “Ff” on the board, call some students to go on board, try to copy and
trace, write the letter correctly (It can be the capital F or lowercase f).
3. Listen, point and repeat (B) (10 mins)

Use the phonics cards with fish, fan, farm, fork read the words out loud and ask students to
repeat.
 Use gestures (hand actions) to help students to understand the meanings of the three words.
 Check students’ understanding: Teacher says the words, all students do actions and vice
versa.
 Call some students to say the words out loud and correct their mistakes (if any)
Break time (5 mins)
Activity: What is it? (10mins)
 Hold up the phonics cards fish, fan, farm, fork
 Show one by one phonics card, partly hidden by a sheet of paper
 Slowly reveal the phonics card
 The students try to guess what the phonics card is
 Go on the other cards
 Remember to correct the students’ pronunciation

4. Listen and chant (E) (track 25) (5 mins)

Teacher play the video English Stories Channel - Oxford Phonics World 1 - Letter F - YouTube
or open itool and asks the students to chant along
The whole class sings the whole chant.
