University Entrance Examination is very important in Vietnamese students.
High school graduates have to take it and get high results to be admitted to
universities. The pressure on the candidates remains very high despite the
measures that have been taken to reduce the heat around these exams, since

securing a place in a state university is considered a major step towards a
successful career for young people, especially those from rural areas or
disadvantaged families. In the year 2004, it was estimated that nearly 1 million
Vietnamese students took the University Entrance Examination, but on average
only 1 out of 5 candidates succeeded. Normally, candidates take 3 exam subjects,
and each lasts; 180 minutes for the fixed group of subjects they choose. There are

IV. COMPREHENSION READING
Read the following passage. Choose one best answer (A, B, C or D)
Many people think that we can learn a lot about the culture of a foreign
country simply by living in that country. However, this is not necessarily true.
Often, the longer we stay in a foreign country, the more we realized how little we
actually know about the culture of that country.
Books and talks about other people’s culture can even be dangerous
because they concentrate on cultural differences and exaggerate national
character, and sometimes a lot of information they contain is untrue.
In a study recently carried out in Britain, people were asked to make a list
of anything that they thought was typical of Britain and would interest a foreign
visitor there. Most mentioned Shakespeare, the Queen, village inns, English folk
dancing, English castles, and fish chips wrapped in newspaper. Although all of
these characters can be found in British culture, they do not show the real interest
of ordinary British people: (They are, in fact, simply stereotype – that is, general

character which people wrongly think are typical.)What are surprising is that
they were suggested by British people themselves as representing their culture. If
people have such a wrong impression of their own culture, how much false
would their impression of other culture be!
32. If we stay a long time in a foreign country, _________
A. we will sometimes forget about culture of our own country.
B. we can often learn a lot about the culture of the foreign country.
C. we usually realize our own ignorance about its culture.

______
A. concentrate on the dangers of the foreign culture.

A. argued they knew little about British culture.
B. said they themselves were not typical of British people.

Men (36) lazy in the home, according to an official survey
published today. They have about six hours’ a week more free time than
(37) , but play very little part in cooking, cleaning, washing, and ironing,

(38) the Social Trends Survey by the Central Statistical Office.
Nearly three quarters of married women claimed to do all or most of the
(39) , and among married men the proportion who admitted that their
wives did all or most of the housework was only slightly lower.
The survey showed that washing and ironing was the least popular task
among men, with only one per cent performing this duty, compared with 89 per
cent of women, and 10 per cent sharing equally.
Only 5 per cent of men prepare the evening meal, 3 per cent carry out
household cleaning duties, 5 per cent household shopping, and 17 per cent wash
the evening dishes.
But when household gadgets break down, repairs are carried out by 82
per cent of husbands. The survey says that, despite our economic problems, the

Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.
Traditions, saying, beliefs, language, and values are just a few things that
make up our culture. Culture is the framework in which families are structured.
It shapes our expectations and ideals. Culture plays a part in the meaning of
marriage and our roles as husbands, wives, children and parents.
Understanding cultural differences and similarities related to marriage is
important. Culture affects the roles that spouses take within marriages, the age at
marriage and number of children a couple have, the meaning of divorce,
cohabitation and non-marital childbearing, and the way parents raise children.
Understanding how relationships and marriages vary across cultural contexts,
and how they are similar, we will be able to identify the unique ways that
marriages and family life affect people of various cultures. As a result, we will be
able to help families and sustain happy marriages.
A cross cultural marriage or similar love relationship can be extremely
exciting. The cultural background, visits to the other country, the language of the
country and learning to speak it, the different habits and ways of doing and
saying things that people from other cultures have, are. all very exciting indeed.
What of the disadvantages of a cross cultural marriage or love relationship with
someone from another country or cultural background? No matter how much you
love your husband or wife, no matter how high your level of cross cultural
awareness, cross cultural communication and respect for differences.
Misunderstanding seems to be unavoidable.

Preparation is a key to a successful interview. Does the idea of going to a job
interview make you feel a little nervous? Many people find that it is the hardest
part of the employing process. But it is not really true. The more you prepare and
practice, the more comfortable you will feel. You should find out as much as
possible about the company before you go to the interview. Understand the
products that they produce and the services that they provide. It is also good to
know who the customers are and who the major competitors are. Practice makes
perfect. It will also make you feel more confident and relaxed. So, practice your
answers to common questions. Make a list of questions to ask, too. Almost all
interviewers will ask if you have questions. This is a great opportunity for you to
show your keenness, enthusiasm, and knowledge.
Make a great impression. The interview is your chance to show that you are
the best person for the job. Your application or resume has already exhibited that
you are qualified. Now it is up to you to show how your skills and experience
match this position and this company. The employer will be looking and
listening to determine if you are a good fit. He/she will be looking for a number
of different qualities, in addition to the skills that you possess. To make the best

impression, dress appropriately; express your strengths; arrive early, by about 10-
15 minutes; be enthusiastic; shake hands firmly; be an active listener; sit up
straight and maintain eye contact; and ask questions
After the interview, follow up with a thank-you note. This is a chance for
you to restate your interest and how you can benefit the company. Your best bet
is to try to time it so that the note gets there before the hiring: decision is made.
You should also follow up with a phone call if you do not hear back from the
employer within the specified time.

Ordinary houses are full of hazardous waste. The most important hazardous
waste in the homes is batteries. When you throw them out with your other
garbage, they break open at the landfill. The poison inside them moves through
rain water and other liquids to the bottom of the landfill. Then it can pollute the
natural water in the ground . We should use rechargeable batteries. Another
hazardous waste in homes is motor oil. Don’t throw motor oil on the ground or

throw it on the garbage. It poisons the environment. We should recycle motor oil.
Paint is another kind of hazardous waste in homes. Some cities have a “Paint
Exchange Day “. If you bring open , unused blue paint and want red, they give
you red. Sometimes they mix the paints together into strange colours. If you
paint walls with them , you help save the environment.
