Vietnamese
‘s
New
Year
is
celebrated according to the Lunar calendar
. It is officially known as the Lunar New
Year or Tet . It occurs in late January or
early February . The exact date changes
from year to year . Vietnamese people
usually make preparation for Tet holiday
several weeks beforehand . They clean and
decorate their homes , cook special food
such as sticky rice cakes , and make
offerings on the family altars . On Tet ,
people usually put on their new clothes ,
give one another the Tet season ‘s
greetings , and pay mutual visits .

Are you looking …………for……… a
cheap , clean , effective source of power
that doesn’t... …cause………pollution or
waste natural resources ? Look no further
than solar energy . While most fuels now in
use are… …being………... burned at an
astonishing rate , solar energy , or power
from the ……sun……,will last as long as the
world ………lasts…….. . This energy has
already been ………used…….to heat and
cool homes and to cook food . It has been
used experimentally …………in……..radio
batteries and in furnished power for
telephone lines .The devices , ………
however……, are cheap to operate but very
expensive to produce .

We are slowly destroying the earth .
The seas and rivers are too dirty to swim in .
There is so much smoke in the air that is
unhealthy to live in many of the world’s
cities . In one well-known city , for example ,
poisonous gases from cars pollute the air
so much that policemen have to wear
oxygen masks .
We have cut down so many trees

that there are now vast areas of wasteland
all over the world . As a result , farmers in
parts of Africa can not grow enough to eat .
In certain countries in Asia there is so little
rice . Moreover , we do not take enough
care of the countryside . Wild animals are
quickly disappearing . For instance , tigers
are rare in India now because we have
killed too many for them to survive .
However , it isn’t so simple to talk about
the problem . We must act now before it is
too late to do anything about it . Join us now
. Save the Earth . This is too important to
ignore .

Christmas is a very important festival
in Britain and the USA . Christmas Day is on
25 December . The day before this is called
Christmas Eve and the day after is called
…Boxing Day… . At Christmas , we give
presents and send … Christmas cards…to
each other . We put special trees ,
Christmas trees, in our homes and
decorate them with colored and other
pretty things . Children believe that Father
Christmas visits them and brings them
presents at night . Many people go to church
at Christmas and sing carols . On Christmas

chiefly as a direct source of energy ,
although it is also used in the chemical
industry . At the moment the supply is
plentiful , but it will be running short by the
end of the century , and will run over during
the 21st century unless new supplies are
found . We could do without natural gas, as
coal gas can be used as a substitute , and
there should be enough coal to last for
several centuries . However , it is a form of
energy which is not only cheap , but also
highly efficient .
1. What is natural gas used for ?

2. Where does it come from ?
3. What is gas used chiefly as ?
4. When will it run out ?
5. What can be used as a substitute for
natural gas ?
1. Natural gas is used for heating
homes and for cooking.
2. It comes from the gas fields below the
North Sea.
3. Gas is used chiefly as a direct source
of energy .
4. It will run out during the 21st century.
5. Coal gas can be used as a substitute.

2. _T__ We don’t know exactly how much
fuel is left.
3. _T__ We shouldn’t waste fuel .
4. _ F__ According to Professor Marvin
Burnham , solar
energy will be used as a substitute for
natural resources .
5. _F__ All people agree to use nuclear
power as an
alternative energy .
6. _T__ Radioactivity from nuclear power
causes cancer and
may have bad affect on the
future generations.
7. _F__ Natural resources should be used as
much as possible.

One family activity on Mother’s Day
is to have the children cook the early
morning meal . then they serve the food to
their mother while she is still in bed or they
might clean the house so she does not have
to do it . Fathers might take care of the
children that day so that the mothers can
rest , or take a walk , or read a book . Many
mothers feel that this free time on this
special day is a very good Mother’s Day
gift .
1. _T__ The children
prepare breakfast
for their mother on
Mother’s day .
2. _T__ On Mother’s Day , mothers have
more time off .
3. _T__ Fathers help the mothers with their
childcare on this day
4. _F__ Having free time on Mother’s Day
means nothing to
many mothers .
 Energy is very important in modern
life . People use energy to run machines ,
heat and cool their homes , cook , give
light , transport people and products from
place to place . Most energy nowadays

comes from fossil fuels such as petroleum ,
coal, and natural gas . However , burning
fossil fuels causes pollution . Also , if we
don’t find new kinds of energy , we will use
up all the fossil
fuels in the 21 st
century .Scientists are working to find other
kinds of energy for the future . What might
these sources of energy be ?
1.__T_ Energy is collected for use in their
homes .

IV_Read the passage carefully , then
decide whether the following
statements are true (T) or false (F )

Many people still believe that natural
resources will never be used up . Actually ,
the world’s energy resources are limited .
Nobody knows exactly how much fuel is
left . However , we also should use them
economically and try to find out alternative
sources of power . According to Professor
Marvin Burnham of the New England
Institute of Technology , we have to start
conserving coal , oil and gas before it is too
late ; and nuclear power is the only
alternative .

However , many people do not
approve of using nuclear power because it is
very dangerous . What would happen if
there was a serious nuclear accident ?
Radioactivity causes cancer and may badly
affect the future generations .
The most effective thing is that we
should use natural resources as economical
as possible .
1. _F__ Natural resources will never run out
.

reserves may be exhausted within forty or
fifty years .
1.__T__ People have utilized different kinds
of energy resources.
2.__F__ Energy has only been used for a

short time .
3. __F__ Petroleum has become the most
essential for more a
century now .
4. __F__ Without petroleum , our economies
will not be affected.
5. __F__ We have an endless supply of
petroleum on the earth .

A tidal wave is a very large and very
destructive wall of water that rushes in from
the ocean toward the shore . Many scientists
call these waves tsunami . In Japanese
tsunami means “ storm wave “ . But do you
know that tidal waves are not caused by
storms and that they are not true tides at all
? A true tide is the regular rise and fall of
ocean waters at definite times each day ,
but a tidal wave comes rushing in suddenly
and unexpectedly . A tidal wave is caused
by an underwater earthquake . Scientists
call the
underwater earthquake a
seaquake . The word “ seaquake” consists of
two words , the word ”sea” which means “
ocean” and the word “quake“. “To quake“
means“ to shake “ or “ to tremble“. When a
seaquake takes place at the bottom of the

ocean , the ocean floor shakes and trembles
, sometimes the ocean floor shifts. It is this
shifting that produces the tidal wave . The
tidal wave begins to move across the sea at
great speed .
1.__T_ In Japan , tsunami is known as “
storm wave “.
2.__F__ A tidal wave is not strong enough
to cause destruction.
3.__T__ A seaquake is an earthquake that
takes place at the
bottom of the ocean.
4.__F__ Tidal waves begin to move across
the ocean very slowly.

 Grammar

We can develop alternative sources of
energy , and unless we’ll never succeed .
Instead of burning fossil fuels we should be
concentrating on more economic uses of
electricity , because electricity can be
produced from any sources of energy .
If we didn’t waste so much energy ,
our resources would last longer . We can
save more energy by conservation than we
can produce for the same money . Unless
we do research on solar energy , wind power
, tidal power , hydroelectric plants …our
fossil fuels will run out and we’ll all freeze or
starve to death.
Many countries are spending much
more time and money
on research because the energy from the
sun , the waves and the
winds last forever . We really won’t survive
unless we start working on cleaner and safer
sources of energy .
