READING
Reading is the act of getting meaning from printed or written words. It is basic to learning and one of the
most important skills in everyday life. Reading provides the key to all kinds of information. It enables us to learn
how to build or fix things, to enjoy stories, to discover what other people believe, and to develop ideas and
beliefs of our own. In the simplest sense, reading means recognizing letters and groups of letters as symbols that
stand for particular sounds. The sounds, in turn, form words that express ideas in written or printed form. A
broader definition of reading links it more closely with other uses of language and with thinking. According to
that definition, reading first depends on a reader's memory and experience to understand what is read. It then
involves how well the reader remembers, uses, and reacts to the material.

For many years, no one could communicate with people who had been born without hearing.
These deaf people were not able to use a spoken language. But, early in the 1700s, the deaf were taught
a special language. Using this language, they could share thoughts and ideas with others. The language
they used was a language without sound. It was a sign language. How did this sign language work? The
deaf were taught to make certain movements using their hands, faces, and bodies. These movements
stood for things and ideas. People might move their forefingers across their lips. This meant, "You are
not telling the truth.” They might tap their chins with three fingers. This meant "my uncle.” The deaf
were also taught to use finger alphabet. They used their fingers to make the letters of the alphabet. In
this way, they spelled out words. Some deaf people could spell out words at a speed of 130 words per
minute. Sign language and finger spelling are not used as much as they once were. Today, the deaf are
taught to understand others by watching their lips. They are also taught how to speak.

WOMEN

In developing countries, where three fourths of the world’s population live, sixty percent of the
people who can’t read and write are women. Being illiterate doesn’t mean they are not intelligent. It
does mean it is difficult for them to change their lives. They produce more than half of the food. In
Africa eighty percent of all agricultural work is done by women. There are many programs to help poor
countries develop their agriculture. However, for years, these programs provided money and training for
men.
In parts of Africa, this is a typical day for a village woman. At 4:45 a.m., she gets up, washes and
eats. It takes her a half hour to walk to the fields, and she works there until 3.00 p.m. She collects
firewood and gets home at 4:00. She spends the next hour and a haft preparing food to cook. Then she
collects water for another hour. From 6:30 to 8:30 she cooks. After dinner, she spends an hour washing
the dishes and her children. She goes to bed at 9:30 p.m.
International organizations and programs run by developed nations are starting to help women, as
well as men, improve their agricultural production. Governments have already passed some laws
affecting women because of the UNO Decade for Women. The UNO report will affect the changes now
happening in the family and society.
46. By whom (what) was the Decade for Women organized?
A. by the United Nations Organization. B. by developing countries.

A. because 60 percent of women are illiterate.
B. because 80 percent of all agricultural work is done by women.
C. most women are not intelligent. D. all are correct.
48. Why do people say that African women’s lives are hard?
A. Because these women are busy with housework. B. Because they work all day in the fields.
C. both A and B are correct. D. Because they are illiterate.
49. A typical African woman spends _____ collecting firewood every day.

correct answer to each of the questions from 8 to 12.
It is always thought that women are the second class in the citizen, and men are the first. There is
not real equality of opportunity for men and women. Years ago, people were living in a man-dominated
society. Women had to obey their husbands and fathers absolutely. Women's place was in the kitchen
and women's work was household. In many places, women were not even allowed to go to school.
Women had no rights, even the right to choose a husband for themselves. Men usually occupied high
positions in society so they thought they were more intelligent and important than women. Men
considered women their property. Sometimes, women were mistreated by their husbands and suffered
this as a fate. Many parents did not even want to have female children.
Thanks to the women's liberation movement, women have nowadays proved that they are equal to
men on every aspect. An average woman has weaker muscles than an average man but she may be as
intelligent as him. Women can do everything that men can, and women can do one thing that no man
can: they produce children.

The Saola, one of the world's rarest mammals, is a forest-dwelling bovine found only in the Annamite
ranges of Vietnam and Laos. The species was first discovered in Vietnam in 1996 in Huong Thuy district of
Thua Thien-Hue.
Le Ngoc Tuan, director of the reserve in Thua Thien – Hue province, said his organization carried out a
survey from November 1996 to February 1997 in A Luoi, Nam Dong, Huong Thuy, Huong Tra and Phong Dien
districts. The survey showed that the rare mammal appeared in 19 communes in those districts. Officials also
collected 27 pairs of horns and skulls. Mr. Tuan said “The Saola is at a high risk of being hunted and will panic
if it sees hunting dogs in the woods.” Since its discovery, it is believed to have rapidly declined in the face of
ever-increasing human presence, although the actual size of the remaining population is still unknown.

According to scientists and researchers on wildlife, Saola numbers had crashed to around 200 worldwide.
The WWF and Vietnam authorities have carried out a plan for the period between 2005-2010 in six central
provinces (from Nghe An to Quang Nam). Forest wardens have eliminated all traps to catch the Saola and
banned hunting dogs from protected areas. Three protection stations have been established to protect the
endangered species.
