Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Man sometimes upsets the balance of nature, and there are some spectacular examples of this in
the world. A species of cactus called prickly pear was introduced from America into Australia, where it
found conditions so favorable to its growth that it quickly spread and took over vast areas of land which
soon became an impenetrable and useless tract. In this case a cure was possible, for caterpillar which ate
nothing but this cactus was also introduced. With such a quantity of its food growing in one area, the
caterpillar spread rapidly too, and the prickly pear was soon wiped out in much of the land it had once
destroyed.
In the past, Man felled large forests to obtain wood for building and to create clear areas for
cultivation. This was before he realized that the trees were the very reason for his land being fertile and
well watered. The roots, as we shall see later on, seek out moisture in the soil below, often at a
considerable depth, and after using some of this for its life processes, the tree loses the excess through
pores, called stomata, in its leaves. This causes damper air in and above the forests and, consequently, a
more suitable atmosphere for the trees and other plants to grow in. Their leaves give shade to the
ground beneath and prevent the hot sun from evaporating all the moisture from the surface layers of the
soil, so that other smaller plants can develop in the rich woodland soil. In the autumn, the leaves fall and
eventually rot down to give the leaf-mould and humus ( organic matter which has decomposed in the
soil) which is essential if soils are to support rich vegetation.
When forests were removed by Man, the sun scorched the ground, the atmosphere became dry,
the soil soon lost its fertility with the lack of rotting vegetable matter, and the area became barren.
Without any trees to provide shelter or roots to bind the soil together, the wind and rain removed the
surface soil, in some cases down to the bare rocks beneath.
So we can see by these examples that the world of plants is not a haphazard arrangement but a
balanced society, built up over hundreds of millions of years, and much thought must be given to any
activity which might upset this, for our lives depend on the vegetation around us.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions.
Man sometimes upsets the balance of nature, and there are some spectacular examples of this in
the world. A species of cactus called prickly pear was introduced from America into Australia, where

it found conditions so favorable to its growth that it quickly spread and took over vast areas of land
which soon became an impenetrable and useless tract. In this case a cure was possible, for caterpillar
which ate nothing but this cactus was also introduced. With such a quantity of its food growing in one
area, the caterpillar spread rapidly too, and the prickly pear was soon wiped out in much of the land it
had once destroyed.
In the past, Man felled large forests to obtain wood for building and to create clear areas for
cultivation. This was before he realized that the trees were the very reason for his land being fertile
and well watered. The roots, as we shall see later on, seek out moisture in the soil below, often at a
considerable depth, and after using some of this for its life processes, the tree loses the excess through
pores, called stomata, in its leaves. This causes damper air in and above the forests and, consequently,
a more suitable atmosphere for the trees and other plants to grow in. Their leaves give shade to the
ground beneath and prevent the hot sun from evaporating all the moisture from the surface layers of
the soil, so that other smaller plants can develop in the rich woodland soil. In the autumn, the leaves
fall and eventually rot down to give the leaf-mould and humus ( organic matter which has decomposed
in the soil) which is essential if soils are to support rich vegetation.
Question 39. What is the passage mainly about?
