Summary of new contributions of the thesis

1. Through comprehensive scientific survey on the current state of French Quarter in Hai
Phong, the thesis has fully and precisely defined characteristics, and assessed of the outstanding
value of urban landscape, structure of urban components, the unique urban landscape and
importance architecture.
2. By studying adaptive urban conservation methods of the Western, the thesis has developed
criteria for evaluating potential urban conservation system in accordance with peculiarities of urban
architectural heritage in Vietnam in general and in Hai Phong in particular, helps the thesis having
the accuracy and scientific contributions to the development of urban conservation science which is
still new in Vietnam. The thesis draws lessons for scientific research of urban conservation in
Vietnam - especially for the small historical cities and therebsy impacts to the perspective of spatial
organization of more than 600 grade V cities which are mainly formed in recent years.
3. Localizing urban heritage conservation in French Quarter in Haiphong and classifying
protected areas at 3 levels: level 1 conserved region - the core area, conservation area level 2 - the
center, and conservation level 3 – the buffer zone.
4. Through surveys, record drawings, photography and learn from historical data, statistical
science, classification and evaluation of the value of urban and architectural history of the French
colonial period, the thesis has established the urban and architectural heritage fund in French

Quarter in Haiphong. In the mean time, the thesis finds and offers abuilding that could be
recognized as the National Monuments, 3 buildings that could be granted as City Monument.
5. Through evaluating the conservation status of urban heritage fund in the context of
developing French Quarteras the nuclear center in Haiphong urban future in order to propose7
oriented solutions and 1 solutions to conserve the particular river system. The proposed solutions
are highly feasible in preservation, renovation, refurbishment, new build, and continuing the legacy
of the French Quarter in Hai Phong urban development.`
6. Propose conservation-oriented management, construction management and developmental
control appropriate to the characteristics of French Quarter in Hai Phong in the context of
urbanization and adapt to the urban development of Hai Phong future.
