1. Astract of the dissertation content

The thesis “Trade credit: A case study on shrimp farmers in the Mekong Delta”
consisted of 4 contents, such as (1) Assessing the actual use of trade credit by shrimp
farming households in the Mekong Delta; (2) Estimating factors affecting the amount of
credit purchases of shrimp farmers in the Mekong Delta; (3) Evaluation of the effect of trade
credit on the technical efficiency of shrimp farming households in the Mekong Delta; (4)
Propose solutions and policy implications to help increase funding from trade credit,
rationalize the use of trade credit to improve the technical efficiency of shrimp farming
households in the Mekong Delta.
2. New findings of dissertation

This study contributes to clarifying the theoretical base of trade credit in a systematic
way. A comprehensive empirical test of theories of trade credit.
The results of the estimation of factors affecting the amount of credit money show
that there were 11 factors that influenced the amount of credit money purchased of shrimp
farmers, included time of acquaintance, familiarity, age, education level, farming
experience, land area owned, savings ability, cost, access to bank credit, late payment
history and trade credit interest rates. In which, familiarity, late payment history and trade

credit interest rates are new factors discovered in this study.
In addition, the results of estimating the effect of trade credit on the technical
efficiency of farmers showed that the amount of credit money has a positive effect on the
technical efficiency of shrimp farming households. These results showed a certain
contribution to the field of rural finance.

3. Study on application/applicability in practical production, problems need to be

addressed:
This study focused on trade credit, a relatively new source of funding in the rural
credit market. The analytical results of trade credit use by shrimp farmers provide empirical
evidence on the prevalence of trade credit in shrimp farming activities in the Mekong Delta.
Moreover, the results of estimation the effect of trade credit on the technical efficiency of
shrimp farmers in the Mekong Delta are a scientific base with practical values to help
scientists and policy administrator refer to the planning to improve the technical efficiency
of shrimp farming households through rational use of trade credit. Which contribute to
promote the sustainable development of shrimp farming in the Mekong Delta.
The issue addressed in further study is to do with a larger sample size and in more
crops. On that base, the study can compare the effect of trade credit on technical efficiency
among households with different farming operations or in different localities, as well as
evaluating whether technical efficiency poses a reverse effect on the trade credit needed by
shrimp farmers in the long term.
