PAST PERFECT


THE USES
 We

use the past perfect for something
that started in the past and continued up to a
later time in the past:

Past

Present

When I was 18 years old, I had gone to CTU to learn.

THE USES
 We

use the past perfect when we are
telling our experience up to a point in
the past:
My trip to Ha Giang was the most meaningful trip I had
travelled
They had finished their homeworks when they came to


class.


THE USES
 We

use the past perfect when we are
talking about for something that happened
in the past and is important at a later
time in the past:
I couldn’t work in that company. I hadn’t passed the final
interview

He didn’t buy a new apartment. He had lost his job.


FORMULA: S + V + O
Present Perfect: S +Have/Has+ V3/ED+ O
Past Perfect:

S+

Had+

V3/ED + O

V3: Irregular Verb ( go-went-gone)
VED: Regular Verb (Want-wanted; Study-Studied)

She didn't want to move. She had lived in

Hoi An all her life.
She hadn’t lived in Hoi An.
Had she lived in Hoi An?


Phượng bread was the most delicious loaf of bread that I had eaten
when I travelled in Hoi An.


I couldn’t go to see the final concert of The Mask singer Viet
Nam program. The tickets had been sold out before.
