UNIT 6 RELATION SHIP
Lesson 1: DESCRIBING PEOPLE
Words and phrases to describe people
Let’s start with some positive ways to describe people
 He’s a funny guy
 He’s really fun to be with
 He’s very easy to talk to
Now let’s look at a few negative ways
She can come across as a bit cold sometimes ( doi khi co ay di ngang qua nhu 1 chut hoi lanh)
He’s a bit hard to read
He can be quite aggressive ( kha’ hung du~)
Multipart verbs
Multipart verbs are common in spoken and informal English. They're made by taking a verb and adding a
small word like to, on, in or at, which changes the verb's meaning. Notice the difference to makes in
these examples.

They warmed the food. Họ hâm nóng thức ăn

They warmed to him. Họ sưởi ấm thức ăn

You can often work out the meaning of multipart verbs by the context they appear in. In this example, you
see evidence that warm to is a positive action, and it involves the changing relationship between people.

 Lars is a funny guy. A little quiet in the beginning, but when he warms to people, he's really
fun to be with

Lesson 2: DESCRIBING TEAM CHEMISTRY
Giving your impressions about relationships (cho ấn tượng của bạn về các mối quan hệ)

When giving your impression of other people's relationships, you can use seem to + verb

They don't seem to talk to each other a lot. ( họ dường như khơng nói chuyện với nhau nhiều)

When giving your impression about things happening at the moment, you can use seem to + be + verb +
ing.

He seems to be getting on well with the other engineers. ( anh ấy dường như đang hòa thuận
với các kỹ sư khác)
If you want to give your impression about events in the past, you can use seem to + have + past
participle.

 He doesn't seem to have spent much time with his teammates ( anh ấy dường như không dành
nhiều thời gian với các đồng đội của mình)
When talking about how people relate, use each other and one another. Each other refers to two
people. One another refers to more than two people.
They seem to be getting on well with each other. ( Họ dường như đang hòa thuận với nhau)
They don't seem to like one another. ( họ dường như không thích nhau)
They've warmed to one another pretty quickly. ( họ đã sưởi ấm cho nhau quá nhanh)
Mentioning what someone has said

Lesson3: BUILDING RAPPORT
Giving more information
In a social situation, where you want to avoid giving a very short response, you can add extra information
using words like when.
A: Do you guys often go out for dinner?
Yes, when there's a special occasion, like a birthday.

To give a less positive answer, you can use a phrase like but only when.
A: Do you ever go to that park?
Yes, but only when it's not too cold.
You may choose to split but and only when.
A: Are you on Friendface?
B: Yes, but I don't use it much, only when I'm bored.
You can also say what our normal behavior is and contrast it with exceptions.
A: Did you come in on the subway?
B: I usually do, but today it was sunny, so I walked.
A: Are you going to the staff party?
Maybe, but I don't generally like that kind of thing
