PRESIDENTS REPORT
2009-2010

As the season of 2009-10comes to an end it is pleasing to present a report of a successful and
pleasing year in all aspects of the clubs activities and to be able to report no lives lost.
Once again the clubs numbers showed a large increase in patrolling members, junior members
and associate members.

The patrolling members under of the direction of Club Captain Peter Wright-Smith and his Patrol
Captains showed great proficiency in performing their duties in keeping our beach a safe and
enjoyable place to be. Many of the patrolling members patrolled over the number of hours they
were rostered to do. Thank you to all those who did their duties in a most professional and
satisfying way.

Thank you to Peter Adlington and his band of age managers who did a successful and
wonderful job in teaching and instructing our Juniors in beach and surf safety whilst at the same
time having an enjoyable time at the beach and the club. Many of them making new friends and
learning respect for others and the Club and its equipment.

Thank you to Lloyd Smith, Gaye Adlington, Mitchell Pakes and all those other workers and
trainers who spent many hours in training our Bronze squads, SRC squads, IRB drivers and

crewman and many other awards. I would like to make a special mention of Natalie Brown for
her hard work and effort in successfully organising patrol uniforms and above all for her
organisation of club apparel, shorts shirts, costumes etc.

A big job done well and appreciated by all members of the club. A great big thank you to Pauline
Pakes and her hard working ladies and gentlemen helping out in the canteen and with the Bar-
B-Que. It seems we might have to get another coffee machine the demand was so great. It was
very pleasing to see such great support for our canteen and Bar-B-Que by the members of the
club.

It was great to see our fund raising activities such as the Golf Day, Ocean Swim and the Xmas
raffles being so successful and getting bigger and better each year. Any ideas for fund raising
should be put forward to the Club Management Committee for consideration in the
2010-11 season.

Thank you to all our Sponsors for their support throughout the season especially Liam and
Maree Guilfoyle, Marc Zobec and Corrine Le Gal, Culburra Bowling and Recreation Club, and
Culburra Bowling and Recreation Club-Sports and Social Club. Through their support and
donations we were able to purchase much needed Life Saving equipment and boards for the
juniors.

In the Sporting and Carnival activities special mention must be made of two of our members in
their outstanding successes throughout the season. Harry Schouller for his successes in
winning the 2Km beach run at Sydney Water, Branch, Country, State and Australian
Championships – well done Harry. Karen Higgison for her successes in many events at Sydney
Water, Branch, State and Australian Championships .Also her success in all Ocean swims and
at The World Veterans Swimming Championships. Well done Karen.

I also congratulate the many other competitors who competed and /or who were successful in
their respective competitions. In closing I wish to thank all members of the Club Management

Committee for all your hard work and support you have given me in making this a most
successful and enjoyable 2009-2010 season.

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORT
2009-2010

I will start with saying congratulations to all our members who volunteered their time throughout the 2009/
2010 season. From Nowra - Culburra members to all members who help us out from other clubs, this
year was another successful one. It was a pleasure as Club Captain to stand back and watch our surf
lifesavers perform their duties efficiently and professionally. What was really wonderful to see was the
growing whole family involvement from Grandparents right down to children just able to walk across the
sand if their parents carried them. Your commitment to our club ensured that we were able to provide the
public and members with a safe and enjoyable beach.
I would like to thank all the Patrol Captains and Vice Captains and acknowledge their efforts in some
challenging situations over the season. Effective and positive leadership is very important and makes a
rewarding patrol. My appreciation goes to all the patrolling members new and old for their tireless efforts
and to those who provided valuable support for the undermanned patrols at short notice.
The efforts of members doing little things that that amount to a big assistance for the Club continues to
show through. These are the „BP‟ members – The Quite Achievers‟, even though they do not receive the
recognition they deserve they always turn up and contribute to the life of the club. I thank you very much
for the effort you made.
It was also great to see our nipper parents, family and friends involved again in patrols and water safety.
You guys make up a great core group of people and without your dedication in helping both the junior and

senior club, many aspects would of the club would suffer. I look forward to you and your families returning
next season. Thank you to Peter Adlington for his tireless efforts to ensure the smooth and professional
running of nippers and the junior program throughout the season.
Thank you to my fellow Committee members. To Roger, Mitchell, and Steve your advice and guidance
has been great this year.
To our Vice Captain, Gaye Adlington; thanks for your help throughout the season. A big thanks to Natalie
Brown for all your help and support to ensure that all members are in the right club colours and are
provided with uniforms on the beach. It has been a big year and you have never faulted despite some
extraordinary events outside the club‟s control.
Darren and Col Pakes thanks for keeping the boards and IRBs running all season you have saved the
club an amazing amount of money.
Lloyd Smith and Gaye Adlington, thanks again for your efforts not only giving up your time patrolling, but
also the countless hours you spend running courses to ensure our members are qualified and for training
all our new members in their bronze course. Well done Lloyd and Gaye and congratulations to all
members who completed their bronze and new awards this season.
To Mark and Garry; What can I say? Without you both it would not be possible to perform the role of
Captain to the best of my abilities. With your help and support it makes the job a whole lot easier.
To the Clubbie of the year Col Lawrence thanks for your direction and awareness of policy to ensure that
our club maintained a high standard of OH&S. I just want to mention and quickly thank everyone who
donated, organized, helped and attended the Presentation Night. It was successful event and gave our
lifesavers a chance to let their hair down and Celebrate their success.
Finally, a big thank you must go to our sponsors. Without their financial assistance we could not maintain
our own high standard of service. Well guys, everyone should be proud to be a member of our wonderful,
successful surf club Nowra-Culburra. I will be looking forward to seeing everyone return in September to
start another season. With your help and support our beach continues to be safe. Thanks everyone!
See you on the beach!

Junior Activities Co-ordinator‟s Report
2009/2010 Season

2009/2010 was another incredibly busy season for the Nowra/Culburra Nippers. We had over 185
Nippers registered, which was similar numbers to last season. With this came huge demands on the
many volunteers involved, with all helping to make it one of the best seasons yet.

There were several season highlights, including some fantastic carnival results, particularly at the South
Coast Branch carnival where we had over 40 participants. We also had a very successful carnival in
January, with many Nippers competing for the first time.

This year we were again very fortunate to receive an extremely generous donation prior to the start of the
season which enabled us to purchase 10 soft top foam boards. These proved a hit with the Nippers, with
a noticeable improvement in confidence in the water as a result.

Again there were several more Nipper parents who gained their bronze medallion this year. Apart from
boosting the patrolling numbers, this has enabled Nippers to be fairly self sufficient in terms of water
safety, in most cases not having to rely on patrols.

Another highlight was the visit in January by Elouera 14s and their families. Our under 13s and 14s had
the opportunity to train and patrol with kids from a city club, and it is hoped we can organize a visit by our
older Nippers to Elouera this season. Nippers requires a tremendous effort “behind the scenes”, and I
would like to thank the age managers, canteen and barbeque volunteers, water safety and other helpers
for the fantastic support they have provided this year.

I would particularly like to thank the outstanding group of young members who volunteered to be age
managers this year. These kids gave up their Sunday mornings to train and mentor our children, some in
conjunction with another parent/age manager, but many without any parent involvement. I give special
thanks to Charlotte Smith (Under 6), Stephanie Stretton (Under 7), Maddi Fisher and Jasmine Ashford
(Under 8), Isabella Adlington and Kirstie Higgison (Under 9) and Mitchell Pakes (under 10). If these kids
were away, it was usually up to another teenager to relieve them and thanks to Bree Ashford, Ellie
Higgison, Hayley Wright and Dimity Adlington for stepping up when required.

Many parents did take on the role of age managing this year, with that additional parent involvement
extremely important. Well done to Tanya Heald (Under 6), Trent de Wit (Under 8), Chad Carey (Under
10), Col Lawrence (Under 11), Peter Stretton (Under 12), Andy Fisher, Melissa Williams and Corinne Le
Gall (Under 13) and Jenny Urquart (Under 14).

The barbeque and canteen have been particularly successful this year, thanks to a fine group of mums
and dads, grandparents and other members. They have contributed greatly to the fundraising efforts, and
have made Sunday mornings at Nippers an enjoyable and relaxing time for all.

I would also like to thank the Club Management Committee for their continued support. Their recognition
of Nippers as a great base for the future of the club has been an integral part of its success this year.

I look forward to another season, and hope to see you all back in 2010/2011.

Nowra-Culburra SLSC
Surf Sports report for season 2009-10

Nowra-Culburra SLSC has had one of it‟s best seasons in living memory with some outstanding results at
a local, State and National level. In the past season the club successfully ran two major surf sport events
with excellent feedback from local and out of area competitors. The Club Nipper Carnival held early in the
New-year was a great format with the onus being on participation and having fun.

The Tilbury Ocean Swim Classic was another outstanding success for the club with great feedback from
many of the competitors with a promise to be back next year with their friends. Well done to all involved
for your efforts in making this event such a friendly and fun event. Special thanks to Lloyd Smith and
Andrew Fisher for all the leg work to ensure the ongoing success of this great event.

Two of our members were selected in the South Coast Branch Representative Team that competed at
the 2009 NSW State Inter-branch Championships at Hawks Nest beach near Foster. Kirsty Higgison and
Harry Scouller both excelled against the States and some of Australia‟s best surf life savers. The South
Coast Team finished as 1st Country Branch and 5
th
overall behind the powerhouse Hunter, Central Coast

and two Sydney Branches. Our Branch also beat the Illawarra Team.

The club had great success at the Sydney Water Premiership Series with Harry Scouller winning the u/15
beach Champion title, going thru the 4 round series undefeated. Strong showings also from Alex and
Hannah Wright, Josh Wright-Smith, Alex Richardson, Isabella Adlington, Karen Higgison, Gaye Adlington
and Ian Wright.

At the NSW Country titles at South West Rocks, Nowra-Culburra members won multiple medals with Alex
Wright winning Gold. Excellent Nipper numbers from our club attended the South Coast Branch
Championships at Warilla SLSC with many 1
st
timers competing and really enjoying the Australian
tradition.

The Clubs best achievements came in the month of March at the NSW State Championships held at
Swansea Belmont SLSC followed by the Australian Championships held on the Gold Coast at Kurrawa
SLSC. Nowra-Culburra members won multiple medals at both prestigious events. Leading the charge
with outstanding results was Harry Scouller who won Gold in the u/15yr 2km Beach run both a State and
National level.

Karen Higgison won 2 Gold medals and 2 Silver medals in the 40-44yrs at NSW State then followed up
with a Silver medal in the Surf swim at Nationals.

Gaye Adlington won Gold at State in the 40-44yrs Board Rescue when partnering Karen.
Alex Wright did exceptionally well by transitioning thru all surf, board and Iron person heats, quarters,
semi‟s and into the finals at State.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate all those competitors that wore the club cap with
pride and put there best foot forward when representing our great club. Not all won medals but all
competed with great spirit.

Congratulations to all involved in making this past season such a success both on and off the beach. A
huge thankyou to our wonderful sponsors that continue to support surf sports by donating much needed
boards to our Nippers and Senior club. The club is going from strength to strength and will continue to
achieve great results with the ongoing support from our wonderful sponsors, committee and members.

Yours in Surfing,

Mark Higgison
