INTRODUCTION
• Vietnamese and English are languages rich in nuance and expression.
• One of easiest ways to express nuances and expressions is through idioms
• Colors in idioms of each language play different roles
• Mastering idioms makes it easier to understand and use language
PRESENTATION OF THE PROBLEM
Aims:
• Identify and describe semantic and syntactic features of idioms
• Find out the similarities and differences
• Supply some suggested solutions
THEORY OVERVIEW
1. Definition of idiom
• give information about conceptions (Carine, 2005, p. 495)
• functions as a single unit { Richards and Schmidt ,2002, p. 246)
• meaning is not predictable from their component parts {Makkai ,1972, p.
122)
THEORY OVERVIEW
2. Types of Idioms
• Pure idioms: a single semantic, meaning of individual words can not be
summed together to produce the meaning of the whole
Eg: smell the rat =
suspicious
sense the rat with
nose
• Semi - idioms: The combination of direct meaning and contextual meaning
Eg: rain cats and dogs = rain heavily
THEORY OVERVIEW
Semi - idioms: The combination of direct meaning and contextual meaning
= rain heavily
rain
+
cats and dogs
Eg: rain cats and dogs =
(direct meaning) (contextual meaning)
Literal idioms : base on the direct meaning of the parts that create it, have only
meaning that is literal meaning , no figurative meaning
Eg: black and white has only meaning is,clear
THEORY OVERVIEW
3. Classifications of idioms
• Semantic meaning : refers to the figurative meaning of an idiom, which
can have a negative or positive meaning depending on the context of use
Eg : Quyt lam cam chiu
• Syntactic meaning : refers to the fixedness of word parts , cannot change
the word order, word form, word type.
Eg:
In black and white
In white and black
SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF RESEARCH
